Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Take your GOP plan out of the witness protection program.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Second rate reporter says what?

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Figure I put this out there, for completeness, after which I’m gonna ignore the whole thing. I usually sleep from 6am-2pmEST, so by the time I get up, the ceremony will be over, Murphy the Trickster God willing. I’m sure someone will alert us if the old man actually drops trou and takes a dump on the podium, or if Steve Bannon attempts to Oswald Jared Kushner while all eyes are on Chief Justice Roberts…

The NYTimes, does, incidentally, include the Women’s March as the capper of the weekend. Complete with interactive graphic of the Sister Marches all over the world!

Friday in DC it’ll be… pissing down rain:

People who are marching on Saturday, whether in DC or in one of the more than 600 (yes, srsly!) Sister Marches: there are several times as many people who’d love to march with you but can’t for many reasons.

A dear friend, who’s cared enough all her life to march for good causes, offered to take a list of her friends who couldn’t march with her on Saturday, (she’s in a powerchair now and can has a hard time in that, but she’s going to be at the Seattle march). And a lot of us took her up on it. A lot of us. (I’m still sniffling too, but I’m sure that was just some dust in the air.)

Anyway, if you are going to be at a march, please consider posting on your own wall on Fb, friends locked if you want (I would, tbh) or anywhere else you post, that you’ll take a list of a

It moved me to tears, tbh.

I know it’s hard to cling to reality at this point, but the reality is he’s unpopular, his transition is a mess, the majority of his appointees are unqualified and a lot of them have conflicts and ethical problems that would have disqualified the nominees of any prior President, and he’s already under investigation for corruption.

He’s a bad hire. He was always a bad hire. Nothing he has done since he was elected indicates he’s changed. It doesn’t get better with bad hires- it gets worse. His supporters rolled the dice and they lost. Now we’ll all suffer for their poor judgment.

If so, then why are they spending all their time trying so desperately to undo what he’s done? If his presidency was “inconsequential,” they’d ignore it and just go on about their business. His physical appearance isn’t why he’s repellent to me- although I don’t think he’s an attractive person- it’s the lack of ordinary emotions on his face. People flip thru a set of expressions when they talk depending on what they’re saying. Obviously some people are much more expressive than others but he has none. His face doesn’t change. I don’t think he has an ordinary or minimum capacity for authentic emotion- there’s not enough of a “person” there. The blankness is maybe practiced? If he shows anything it will be bad? That or there’s just nothing there. I suspect the latter- he doesn’t have it to draw on.

    @OzarkHillbilly:

    As expected, incomprehensible word salad.

Does he rehash his primary victories? (I can’t bear to read it.) He hardly ever gives a speech of any length in which he doesn’t revisit and gloat over his primary victories. If it’s not in the text, I’ll bet he goes off prompter to say something about it.

As for me, I’m spending the day in WestWingverse. In my world, Matt Santos won the election. Isn’t Helen a wonderful First Lady?

South City Dinner sold and the food now sucks.

I was in there a few months ago. I thought it was just what I ordered. Now I know better.

It would be good, if possible, to stage some vehicles close to the end of the march (stadium parking?) after dropping everyone off at Union Station, then bringing all the drivers back to US in a single vehicle.

I was second in command of three parades late 1980’s/early 1990’s…back when we launched from AB. For some reason having a clip board seemed to help.? 70 degrees forecasted for St. Louis tomorrow. Know where I can buy a Resist t shirt in an actual store? Ordered one online late in the game. Didn’t arrive.

    @David ?Canadian Anchor Baby? Koch:

I dunno who done that, but they done good!

I woke up about 4:30, after finally falling asleep about 2. Tried to go back to sleep about 5:30, no good. Been reading a giant book of fiction, with evil doers on one side, loosing a war against good heroes. Since Tuesday, actually.

Glad to know I’m not the only person a tad bothered.

My next door neighbor, who helped us move in back in the late 1970s, is in Maryland with a group. Well planned, they had motel rooms booked near a Metro stop, probably will be looking to hit the Metro at 5 am. She’s a birder, used to being in the field well before sun-up. A strong woman. Proud to have her there representing all of us.

No one better mess with her, she works hard and won’t put up with any bullshit. She’s a health inspector, goes into bars, churches, strip clubs, hospitals, to inspect kitchens. Construction sites to inspect septic and sewer construction. Someone built a $500,000 house for a St Jude’s lottery, without a septic permit. No deal, you can’t give away a house without a permit. It wasn’t eligible for a permit, no where to properly install. Shut them down.

So she’s dealt with professional assholes for a long time now. Won’t put up with much.

Hope they are all OK at the end of the day!!

Then a recent interview, incoherent, angry and disjointed abnormal facial expressions! He’s now crazy/demented and We Are So Screwed…

Chris Matthews has done many interviews going back to the beginning of his show in the 1990’s. Throughout the campaign, he rebroadcast snippets. I think they are almost like two different people. Did electing a Black president drive him mad? Has undiagnosed syphilis caught up with him? It would be irresponsible not to speculate.

Trump has failed every time he tried to actually run a business. He’s got a crew of incompetent, deranged crony capitalists to help him try and figure out the biggest job on earth.

Chances of success? Somewhere south of zero

Not to mention he’s seemed to have scorned the help of anyone with the experience who might be sympathetic to him and it doesn’t look like he understands what the job involves. It’s hard to see Trump succeeding.

I’ve talking myself out of marching on Saturday. Probably a bit too soon after the appendectomy.
