Hoocoodanode, Carrier Edition

Toodaloo, tontos:

Donald Trump stood outside a Carrier manufacturing plant in Indianapolis, Indiana weeks before taking office and boasted he just saved 1,100 jobs from being shipped to Mexico.

Inside the plant, some workers were skeptical. Carrier had promised layoffs, which Trump glossed over in his claim to save over 1,000 jobs.

On Monday, these workers were proven right. Though Trump struck a deal with Carrier promising them $7 million in local business incentives if they kept their Indianapolis plant open, the heating and cooling company warned that it would still outsource a number of Indiana jobs to Mexico, regardless. But the Trump campaign still championed the deal as a win for American workers. This week, the Carrier announced it will cut 632 jobs from its Indiana plant by the end of the year.

For labor leaders like Chuck Jones, the layoffs are a grim told-you-so moment. Jones is president of the United Steelworkers 1999, which represents employees at Carrier’s Indianapolis plant.

No one could have predicted. Wait, what?

After Trump failed to mention the major layoffs during his December speech, Jones told the Washington Post that Trump “got up there and, for whatever reason, lied his ass off.”

Trump retaliated on Twitter. “Chuck Jones, who is President of United Steelworkers 1999, has done a terrible job representing workers. No wonder companies flee country!” Trump tweeted of the local union leader, adding that “If United Steelworkers 1999 was any good, they would have kept those jobs in Indiana. Spend more time working-less time talking. Reduce dues.”

Now, as Carrier warned on the day of Trump’s triumphant speech outside the plant, the jobs are leaving Indiana anyway.

“It wasn’t a shock by no means,” Jones said.

Expert businessman and his bible thumping sidekick just let the people of Indiana get fleeced for seven million by Carrier who went ahead and did what they said they would do all along. WINNING.

In yet another setback for the Trump administration, a federal appeals court in Richmond, Virginia, on Thursday refused to lift a nationwide injunction that halted a key provision of President Donald Trump’s revised travel ban on six predominantly Muslim nations.

The ruling is the most bruising the White House has suffered in its attempts to defend the ban, losing 10-3 on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit — which deemed the case important enough to skip the usual three-judge process that the vast majority of cases go through.

New Hampshire Democrats flipped a state House seat in a district that Donald Trump won by 7% in 2016. No Democrat had ever won the district before, and the victory is the first seat in the country at any level to flip from red to blue after the election of Trump.

Democrat Christine Pellegrino has defeated Republican Thomas Gargiulo in New York District 9 State Assembly special election, an upset in a district that Donald Trump won by 23 points in the 2016 presidential race.

Meanwhile, Michael Gerson goes full metal dKos: The Conservative Mind Has Become Diseased.

The conservative mind, in some very visible cases, has become diseased. The movement has been seized by a kind of discrediting madness, in which conspiracy delusions figure prominently. Institutions and individuals that once served an important ideological role, providing a balance to media bias, are discrediting themselves in crucial ways. With the blessings of a president, they have abandoned the normal constraints of reason and compassion. They have allowed political polarization to reach their hearts, and harden them. They have allowed polarization to dominate their minds, and empty them.

Conspiracy theories often involve a kind of dehumanization. Human tragedy is made secondary — something to be exploited rather than mourned. The narrative of conspiracy takes precedence over the meaning of a life and the suffering of a family. A human being is made into an ideological prop and used on someone else’s stage. As the Rich family has attested, the pain inflicted is quite real.

A conspiratorial approach to politics is fully consistent with other forms of dehumanization — of migrants, refugees and “the other” more generally. Men and women are reduced to types and presented as threats. They also become props in an ideological drama. They are presented as representatives of a plot involving invasion and infiltration, rather than being viewed as individuals seeking opportunity or fleeing oppression and violence. This also involves callousness, cruelty and conspiracy thinking.

Clearly, Mr. Gerson missed out on “countertops” and “Pizzagate”, but hey at least he is catching on!

Truly, we are living in remarkable times, people.

But despite the decisions that the Obama administration made that might have helped Elkhart, many people here have a strong dislike of Obama, who presided over an economic recovery in which the unemployment rate fell nationally to 4.6 percent from a high of 10 percent in October 2009. They say it’s not Obama who is responsible for the city or the country’s economic progress, and furthermore, that the economy won’t truly start to improve until President-elect Donald Trump takes office.

But it’s a bit of a change (and an opportunity to peel off some GOP support?) when ‘true’ or ‘traditional’ or ‘establishment’ conservatives like Gerson and J-Rubs and Frum and others have had enough, and most especially when they so accurately diagnose the problem: the current GOP is rabid (or as Charlie Pierce puts it, is suffering from prion disease).

Never hurts to have the additional voices weighing in, in mainstream publications, in very stark terms. “The Conservative Mind Has Become Diseased” – WOW. That is a bit of a change, right?

Now for the harder message about Buddy. Fortunately or unfortunately, right after I checked the fundraiser, I checked my personal email and finally found a response from Wed afternoon to one of my lost and found notices.

I called the person – the first words out of the person’s mouth once I said I was calling about the notice, is “You found my Buddy,” which through me for a loop, since Buddy does not answer to “Buddy.”

But then this person gave me a long convoluted story claiming she is a “neighbor” of the owner, and the owner has had a death in the family, a nephew with a car wreck, and surgery all in the last 5 days, and she was “looking after” Buddy. She claimed that she last saw Buddy on Saturday, even though Buddy was in my yard Friday at 7am. She claimed she had been looking hard for Buddy, but clearly she hadnt called the county animal shelter since I still haven’t heard from them, and they have a report from me from Saturday. I posted on most of the lost and found pet sites Friday night or Saturday. Both I and my HOA president drove by the entrance to her street Saturday/Sunday/Monday and there were no notices posted.

I told her I needed proof of ownership (I was warned by one of the lost pet sites to demand proof, because there are horrible people out there that claim lost dogs for nefarious purposes, such as dog fight bait). She was very taken aback. I told her I was out of town and would call her Fri/Sat after I got back.

Because I am naturally a skeptical person, and years of science courses only hardened that attitude, and I have spent the last 12 years working with a lot of WV RWNJ idiots, I tend to question everything.

I am somewhat suspicious that someone called the day after money was raised for a dog in Glenn Dale, MD. I am suspicious that the dog’s name is Buddy, which is mentioned in the fundraiser, but not on any of the lost pet sites I posted on. She didnt mention the fundraiser, but her story has inconsistencies and it worries me.

In any case, I have decided that I wont deal with her and insist the owner get in touch with me. I am going to check with the county tomorrow and see what they require when you try to claim a lost dog, and I will require the same. At the least I can tell the owner, I can always take Buddy to the shelter and then he will need to follow their rules anyway.

    Any other advice?

Very important: IF BUDDY IS RETURNED TO HIS OWNER – I PROMISE TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO REFUND EVERYONE, SOMEHOW!!

We need to temper our expectations for tonight.

Republicans haven’t lost a congressional race in Montana since 1994.

While Montana has elected Democrats to the Senate and State house, at the congressional level, Dems tend to cap at 40%

    2016: 40%
    2014: 40%
    2012: 43%
    2010: 34%
    2008: 32%
    2006: 39%
    2004: 33%
    2002: 33%

If Quist wins that would be fantastic, but in pragmatic terms, it’s best to judge the outcome on how much he over performs recent historical results.

Yes, I realize the (hypothetical) lyrics are a tad more extreme than Bragg’s; done that way to make the point a little more obvious.

@SiubhanDuinne: Based on your response, my comment was poorly worded. Your musical world and mine do not intersect much. There is no reason why you would know of someone like Billy Bragg. There are also is little reason that I would know of the lyric poet I got paired with by the FB quiz. The point that I was trying, and obviously failing, to make was that judging someone on that is inappropriate. My apologies if i conveyed any other message. And, yeah, the facebook guy hurt my feelings a bit.

It’s fine that our musical tastes don’t overlap much. I haven’t yet listened to the Billy Bragg link you provided, but I will. Maybe I’ll like it, maybe not, but I will give it a generous hearing. And in truth, although there are some things by Berlioz I enjoy listening to, he would overall probably not fall in my Top 50 list of composers.

What? No one else here was positing that liking Bragg’s music would somehow provide crossover opportunities for wingnuts. And Omnes was (I think) trying to point out that any “crossover opportunities” are illusory, since the RWNJs’ liking of BB is based on musical notes, not on his words/lyrics.

[For what it’s worth: I generally appreciate and agree with your comments. Just not this time.]
