Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

We still have time to mess this up!

You cannot shame the shameless.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Infrastructure week. at last.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Everybody saw this coming.

I had the weirdest interaction with a vendor today. Two months ago, we ordered an expensive piece of equipment from them, and it finally showed up last week (a week later than expected, but fine). Problem was, what showed up was the wrong thing; it was wired for UK (240 V) power, not US, and apparently was not easily convertible. Fine, ship it back and get them to send The Right Thing. Which they said they did last week. Until the “I’ve got good news and bad news” email arrived. They didn’t actually ship it last week, because the freight company that delivered it _thought_ that they hadn’t delivered it and told the vendor that, so the vendor thought they just needed to tell the shipping company to make another delivery attempt (this is, mind you, a week after Wrong Thing was delivered and a few days after the RMA’d Wrong Thing was picked up by a different shipper to head back east), and they apparently only realized the contradiction yesterday.

Three emails and a phone conversation, and I’m still not sure WTF happened.

Supposedly now the Right Thing is shipping tomorrow. I’ll believe it when I see it.

I hate to do this — and if it’s inappropriate, I have no problem having it removed — but if any Juicers would like to help me spread word, I’m doing a modest GoFundMe campaign to finish fixing my car. It’s been out of commission since November, and I finally put about $900 into it, but I’m still $560 short, mostly because I didn’t know I had to physically hand over my license plate for the months I wasn’t driving and the fine state of Louisiana fined me without notifying me. I’ve tried to get it taken care of, but between the neverending medical bills and the lawyer fees for my psycho-ex’s custody war, I just keep finding myself underwater. And this week I lose the use of the car I have been driving, and if I don’t get this one back on the road, I won’t be able to pick up my kids next week. So I’m desperate. This week it’s the car or the mortgage, and the mortgage won.

Oh, now that I’m back from vacation, an update on my cancer story. (That still doesn’t feel real.)

Previously, I was diagnosed with testicular cancer and had surgery so quickly (three days after the confirming scans) that it made me dizzy. The follow-up CT showed a possible tumor on the liver, which was pretty weird because there wasn’t any evidence it had spread anywhere in between, but unless it could be determined not to be a tumor, it was going to be chemo for me just to be sure. (No fun at all.)

I had an MRI squeezed in just before we left for two weeks in Europe. While we were traveling, I got a voice mail that it clearly showed that wasn’t a tumor, yay!

So now I’m back to successful surgery with no signs of it having spread. I’m meeting with various oncologists to decide between radiation or very limited chemo as a precaution, either of which will start in a couple of weeks.

All in all, much better than it was looking a while ago. It’ll have to be monitored, but with this one round of treatment, chances are less than five percent it will recur.

Thanks to everyone for your support.

I’m okay with it; I’m a natural optimist. During this process, I’ve learned to tell doctors to be completely straight with me about the possibilities and not try to soften it much. I had several gut-punch-feeling incidents, because they thought they were telling me it’s probably cancer, but we need these tests to confirm, and I heard that it might not be, which my optimistic brain turned into “well, hopefully this test will show it’s nothing.” And then when it wasn’t, that would be worse.

We went to the State Fair today, just us and 120,000 of our neighbors. They have a display of ‘crop art’ where people glue seeds of different types down to make images. There was a theme to the winners this year I think a lot of you will enjoy.
    CROP ART
I also added a shot of the second place in the scarecrow Sr. division.

@Peale: We once went on a short vacation a couple of days after Ohio Dad was laid off — the plans were already in place to drive to NYC to visit my family. Our feeling was, Why Not? Was staying home going to change anything?

It did feel a little weird not to be home, fretting, but we had the rest of the summer for that. I think it helped in a way that it was early into Obama’s first term, when the economy was still wobbly — it didn’t feel all that personal. But then, it hardly ever is, is it?

Anyway, Toronto is a great city with great food and great things to see. I hope you enjoy yourself and that whatever happens on Monday, it is doable.

After all, everyone on the mall is already reveling in AMERICA, there you are between the Capitol and the Washington monument, surrounded by museum after museum full of our history. So I saw Logan Lucky tonight and I liked it. Made being working poor in West Virginia seem more fun than it probably is. I kept waiting for Adam Drivet to whip out a Light Saber.

@WaterGirl: I grew up in a moderately dysfunctional family and my siblings were my anchor. As I suppose I was to them. We could validate one another’s feelings and perceptions.

But maybe you have a point about Barron’s step-siblings!

I remember reading that Melania’s parents live nearby. Let’s hope they are good enough grandparents.

It’s so gross (and typical) how they’re all working so hard on a tax bill when they slapped that piece of shit health care bill together in 20 minutes.

They didn’t care about the health care bill because none of them rely on it. Cutting taxes they care about. That’s serious business. 22 million people denied health care? Who cares? Scrawl some shit on a cocktail napkin and vote on it.

I swear. You can sure tell who is important with these guys.

@Redshift: I had a similar experience with my testicular cancer and the liver – they found a bunch of small hemangiomas (basically a bunch of blood vessels) on my liver too. They said half the population has them, they don’t cause issues, and it’s not a big deal. They decided just to keep their eye on them, to see if they change. That would indicate a problem.

Good luck, and great that things are looking up. And fuck cancer.
