Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

This fight is for everything.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

White supremacy is terrorism.

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Let the trolls come, and then ignore them. that’s the worst thing you can do to a troll.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

When I was faster i was always behind.

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Come on, man.

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

From well-known commentor Yutsano:

Greetings and Salutations!

I will be in the Seattle area once again October 14-17. The only real planned activity I have is my appointment on Tuesday at 1 so I am pretty wide open otherwise. Could I get a post on this please?

If you’re interested / have venue suggestions, leave a comment below. Lurkers & plus-ones always welcome!

Any of those days works for me. Re venue: how about Elliot Bay Tavern in Lake City? I think there was another BJ meetup there, one I missed.

@CaseyL: I’m good with this. I’m leaving after my appointment at 1 on Tuesday and don’t have too much in the way of plans except a possible brunch on Sunday. My Army bud is going to Puerto Rico (medic plus speaks fluent Spanish means he’s needed badly) so my plan with him is shot.

Might bring a plus 1, but he’s a wee bit shy so might just do a separate thing with him.

EDIT: just looked it up and yeah that’s a winner for venue! I guess we just feel out days then.

It sounds like fun; but, I live in Tacoma and don’t have a car. Thus, Seattle may as well be in Timbuktu.

I can reserve a keel boat if anyone wants to go out during the day.

For drinks/dinner kind of thing, downtown works better for me than an extra 20 minutes-half hour north does.

Bonnie, can you get to a lightrail station? Lightrail would take you to Seattle Westlake Station, and then you’d walk a couple blocks to Pike & 6th Ave to catch a Sound Transit Bus route 522, or a Metro Bus route 312. Either one takes you right to Lake City Way and 125th (Elliot Bay Tavern is at 12537 Lake City Way).

Downtown would work better for Bonnie, too, if she can get lightrail from Tacoma. I don’t mind going downtown. Much.

I saw this as the rotating tag:

One pet blog, under Cole, indefensible, with cheeseburger and ketchup for all

Surely, this should be “with cheeseburger and mustard for all”. Or are we stuck with the ketchup because the mustard is still missing?

I’ll come downtown from Marysville, if that makes it possible for Bonnie to make it in from Tacoma.

I just can’t make it on the 16th, is all–I have a can’t-miss appointment that evening in Stanwood. Any other time, though, and I’ll be there.

Well, if we’re meeting downtown, do we want to do it on a weekend day when the traffic is, I think, marginally less awful and parking marginally less expensive? (I’d be taking a bus but some folks may need to drive.) So that would be Saturday or Sunday…I’m available either one.

No ideas about venue; it’s a while since I dined downtown.

There is no legal precedent or process to nullify an election, even one that’s been brazenly stolen, even one that puts enemies of the country in charge of the country. Maybe there should be, but there ain’t.

    October 6, 2017 at 8:54 pm

    @AxelFoley:
That sounds like a lot of wishful thinking. People talk about one thing and another being “a Constitutional Crisis”, but rolling back the election would be “A CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS“. Even given the breadth of his mandate, that’s outside anything Mueller been asked to do. Even if he somehow decided that was within his remit, it’s hard to imagine him going to a district court judge about it rather than the Supreme Court. It’s far more likely this is about some theoretically routine but potentially politically tricky thing, like serving a no-knock search warrant on a high government official.

@Omnes Omnibus: An industrial piercing is a bar that goes through two places in the ear cartilage. The shirt pulled at one end and the other lodged itself in another portion of the cartilage. It just needed to be popped out of there, it was just difficult to do myself.

    @SiubhanDuinne:

Which town (if it’s not too personal)? My first question on all of these episodes is about living there full-time. I would not want to be putt-putting in a boat from my private island to the nearest village or town for groceries in February in Ontario.

On the other hand, $2 million or so for a somewhat rustic summer home seems a bit excessive, especially for Canadians.

@Yutsano: Elliott Bay Brewery also has a brewpub in Burien, very near Seatac. I’m a local brewer so can maybe pull some strings if the venue is brewery related.

If we plan this on Sunday I’ll offer to pickup Bonnie in Tacoma AND get her home again.

Would love to meet local BJers, so will try to make it to wherever you all decide.

Hey guys remember Bonnie who used to post here? Whatever happened to her? It’s like she just disappeared! Hope she wasn’t abducted and dismembered….

j/k–if there had been a Seattle meetup any of the several times I was there earlier this year I would have enjoyed a non-hoppy beer with you!

Screw you for that Taboola-worthy video. It takes two interminable minutes to find out the place is in Winner, South Dakota—and to see the actual property in question, rather than random eye-candy places from all over. Jesus.

Not even the slightest conception of who or what Taboola may be. Sounds like a faux rock ‘n’ roll dance like those that TV shows of the 50s and 60s made up.

Did find the use of Stephen Hawkingesque narration very peculiar.

(One can skip the video ahead – or back, for that matter – with relative ease.)
