Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

This is dead girl, live boy, a goat, two wetsuits and a dildo territory.  oh, and pink furry handcuffs.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Oppose, oppose, oppose. do not congratulate. this is not business as usual.

Everybody saw this coming.

Celebrate the fucking wins.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

There is no compromise when it comes to body autonomy. You either have it or you do not.

You cannot love your country only when you win.

This fight is for everything.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Republicans in disarray!

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

Denver Area Meet-Up

I think that Westminster might be a good central locale based on all the areas everyone said they were coming from – and after talking to friends in that area, they highly recommended this restaurant: Rositas. They had a birthday party there and said it was a good place for a large group and easy to have a conversation (one of the reasons I’ve nixed many of the great brew pubs – conversation is difficult).

Can we pick a date between Oct 16 and Oct 22? Some of you were not going to be around one week or another – let me know and we’ll do our best to work around it – since there was so much interest I’d like to make sure you can all make it.

Ok, give me your best days in the comments and if you have a real complaint about the restaurant, please offer another suggestion in that area. If anyone needs a ride, we’ll see if we can arrange things.

Things to remember – you’re getting this introvert out without Bixby and Bailey to provide a distraction – so don’t be shy. Lurkers are more than welcome. And I’m kind of hoping this will lead to some of us going on group dog walks and/or hikes later on.

    I have a thing between 10 and 5 on the 21st. I can make it after, or any other afternoon/evening.

    As another introvert, thank you, Tamara.

    I can do evenings during the week (commited the entire weekend of 21-22). Thanks for organizing!

    Almost any time during the weekend is best for me – but if it’s a weeknight I can probably re-arrange things to attend.

    I won’t be in Denver until July of next year, but closer to the date I’ll try to remind all y’all that I’ll be there.

    @Mnemosyne:

    I have a sister who lives in the Denver area (Aurora), and she’s forever after me to come out some time for a visit. If we can both remember, let’s try to coordinate calendars — I’d love to meet you as well as Colorado Juicers if we can work out timing.

    @SiubhanDuinne:

    Yes! My schedule will be very tight, because I’ll be coming out for the Romance Writers of America conference, so it would probably be either the day before the conference starts or the day after it ends.

    I can’t edit my comment, but it looks like the conference will be July 18th — July 21st, 2018.

    @Mnemosyne:

    Well, let me know, either in comments or through a FP, or by email (you have mine — I have yours) the dates of your conference, and I’ll plan accordingly. Probably a lot easier for me to work around your schedule than vice versa.

    EDIT: Just saw your #10. I’ll plug in those dates for a possible road trip to Denver.

    EDIT THE SECOND: And Yutsano too! Yay!

    So is that Psych1 guy who is worried you would be mad that he blames Hillary supporters for Trump’s win going to show up?

    @Major Major Major Major: I may. You seem to be an asshole but I don’t feel that way about everyone here. I do find about half this group interesting – that is why I hang around. If it is goung to be a Bernie-hate circle jerk then there is no reason for me to come. But Denver and Colorado were Bernie strongholds so I would expect at least a few locals who share my views.

    I do believe that I would get along well with at least some of you. Clearly not all.

    @Psych1: the only problem I have with your views is that you seem to think it’s the fault of the supporters of the candidate who lost that their candidate lost. I mean, I’m sure I think a lot of your other views are stupid, but that’s the only repugnant one.

    It’s nonsense to assume that a person who caucused for Bernie dislikes HIllary or assumes she is to blame for Trump winning. Most of them were sad their favored candidate lost, and then went on to support Hillary enthusiastically. Because they are intelligent, reasonable adults. The ones that sulked and disrupted and tried to sabatoge the Democratic party we call Bernie Bros.

    I did vote for Hillary in the general but it was a very much “hold your nose” vote. Her Syria and Lybia positions were frightening to me. As important as all our domestic issues are, I believe our foreign policy positions are more critical.

    Of course we all seem to agree that Trump is the ultimate horror.

    I do not agree with the predominant beliefs here regarding Russia.

    @Emma Anne:

    You missed Psych1 barging into the original announcement and proudly proclaiming that he was a Berniebro and would be coming to confront everyone.

    And he seems clueless as to why people might have taken offense to that.

    @Mnemosyne: no need to confront. I much prefer to avoid those who believe as you do.

    If most of this group believes the same nonsense you do than I will not participate. However I do not believe that is the case.

    But I’m a very committed Bernie fan, believe he would have won, and can’t help but blame Hillary supporters for Trump. If you have a problem with that I don’t need to know you.

    @Psych1: More crucial than health care? Civil rights? The economy? All things that Trump is messing up right now.
    To somebody who needs refuge in a safe place, Trump is no option.

    The Libyans and Syrians are basket cases because of brutal dictators, not HIllary. And Hillary wanted to stop the bleeding from civil wars and the aftermath of brutal repression.

    @Psych1: Give up now. Most of us do, having seen the entire play. Bernie may have been loved by the Birkenstocker types in Vermont (they don’t mind quirky), but in meat-and-potatoes America, he would have gone down like a lead anchor. An atheistic Jew who’s nearing 80, has an irritable temperment, and at best modest charisma, would have been a cat toy for Trump, who at least could rely on his tv personal for approachability. Bernie’s flirting with hard-left people would have had him named as a communist, and his proposals would have been shot at as “raising your taxes way too much”. Instead of at least winning the popular vote, Bernie would have been lucky to draw even.

    ooh, could it be Saturday night the 21st? That way, I have a chance of making it! Provided, of course, that the weather cooperates – still can’t believe we went from sunny and 65 yesterday to expecting 3-5 inches of freaking snow today!

    I come back from China on the 17th, and then that following weekend is free until Sunday, and then I’m off to Raleigh, NC. So that weekend would rock for me. Otherwise, the following weekend I think okay as well. One of these days, I”m going to have to actually do the move from PDX to DEN. But first I need to get an apartment.

    16th 17th, 18th or 21st work. I’m a lurker, occasional commenter and big fan. Westminster sounds great – I’m in the mountains west of Boulder.
    Hope this comes together – my daughter would probably come, too.
