Cost to see VP Mike Pence in Denver plummets after tickets struggle to sell

The original minimum ticket for the Mike Pence event was $275. Now it’s $150.

Because of a lack of demand, the Colorado Republican Party is offering a Groupon-like deal to see Vice President Mike Pence.

Pence is the headliner for a party fundraiser Oct. 26 at the Denver Marriott Tech Center, where the minimum-priced tickets originally cost $275.

The party announced the event weeks earlier but struggled to sell the 800 tickets available. So now it’s lowering the lowest-price ticket to $150, a 45 percent discount. A couple can attend with a two-for-one deal at the original $275 price.

Colorado Republican Party Chairman Jeff Hays tried to put his best spin on the news, writing in an email Wednesday: “Due to popular demand, we have made more tickets available at a new lower price.” But the same invite later says space is limited.

    @Amir Khalid: I assume such political fundraisers are par for the course in American politics. It happens all the time. Given that we have Citizens United as the law of the land, I doubt many folks would consider such fundraisers to be unethical. But perhaps, they should be.

    @Amir Khalid: The campaign for Trump Pence 2020 was started January 20th 2017. As such, all campaigning activities are legal. Yes, there should be a law that you cannot run for re-election before you’re fucking sworn in, but remember, we didn’t have clever ass psychopaths with enablers before.

    Terry Gross (NPR’s Fresh Air) interviewed Jane Meyer about her New Yorker article about Pence. It was, ahem, revealing. Both audio and transcript at the link:

    People who I interviewed said that very much in the back of Mike Pence’s mind, he wanted to be president. I mean, he’s wanted – he’s talked about wanting to be president since he was in high school. So he’s coming from the House of Representatives. And it’s very hard to run for the presidency as a congressman. So his thought was, according to people working with him and also people – opponents in politics who I’ve talked to, was that he would go become governor, check that box, learn some – show some executive experience and be a big success in Indiana.

    But instead what happened was he nearly killed his own career there by signing this legislation you’re talking about, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. And what it was was it was presented as a bill that would protect religious freedom, which sounds like a great thing, but when in the fine print what it meant in practice was that people who felt for religious reasons that homosexuality offended them would be able to bar homosexuals from their businesses if they wanted to.

    And people began to take a closer look at it, and they realized the implications of this bill. And what was so interesting to me was among the opponents, it wasn’t just the gay rights activists, though they were, of course, very involved. And it wasn’t just sort of civil libertarians. And it wasn’t just Democrats. It was the Republican business establishment in Indiana just was in an uproar because this legislation was so reactionary and so discriminatory that it began to give Indiana a black eye all cross the country.

    There was trending on the Internet sort of boycott Indiana as a meme. And these businesses began to fear that people would cancel conventions there, that they wouldn’t be able to recruit employees there. And, you know, I spoke with a number of business people, and they’re all quoted on the record in the story. Many of them were Republicans. And many had been supporters of Pence. And they were just in a state of outrage over this whole thing. So Pence went too far.

    Started today on a sad note. Today was the viewing and burial for that young tech coworker who passe this past Friday. They had a public viewing for friends and family, alot of her direct coworker left work to attend that and then they had a private burial with her family. So far no one has outright confirmed the circumstances of her death, but all indication point to no foul play and likely suicide or “accidental” death.

    The 2nd half of my work day was busy, but I did have time to check a bit of stuff online just in time for the twitter conspiracy that Chump admin was using a stand in for Melania. The tweets were funny as hell, BTW… a couple of my favs:

    On one amendment, Cochran voted “yes” despite being told by an aide to vote “no.” The staffer tried to get the senator to switch his vote, but Cochran kept flashing the “thumbs up” sign, even walking over to the clerk tallying the vote and doing so. GOP floor staffers repeatedly told him the leadership wanted a “no” vote. Several more moments passed before Cochran realized he was voting the wrong way and then changed his vote.

I’m reminded of once when Strom Thurmond was about 200 years old and serving as presiding officer of the Senate. An aid was sitting behind him prompting him, “Without objection it is so ordered”, after every quick bit of business, then hearing Strom repeat it like a parrot to make it official. It happened half a dozen times in a row in that clip I saw…
