If you didn’t know by now, John Kelly is an asshole:
On Monday, as the Department of Homeland Security prepared to extend the residency permits of tens of thousands of Honduran immigrants living in the United States, White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly called Acting Secretary Elaine Duke to pressure her to expel them, according to current and former administration officials.
Duke refused to reverse her decision and was angered by what she felt was a politically driven intrusion by Kelly and Tom Bossert, the White House homeland security adviser, who also called her about the matter, according to officials with knowledge of Monday’s events, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.
[….]Duke, who was confirmed by the Senate in April, has informed Kelly she plans to resign, said the officials.

No, I knew. Thanks to SC!

Is there anyone who didn’t know this? He’s Trumpism with brains and no need to spew idiocy on Twitter.

I once worked with a guy that would have been killed if he was deported back to Honduras. He lived with that knowledge 24/7, as his stays here was essentially an exile in limbo the entire time. I sympathized with him, but realize now I gave no real thought to what he was going through- he was just another co-worker- much less think to offer any comfort it may have been in my power to give. Bastards like Kelly count on blind spots like that in people to accomplish their dirty works, too.

@Baud: Thanks, Baud. I have mostly got brickbats for saying anything untoward about the military trinity that serves the current WH.

@Dr. Bloor:
Yup!

@schrodingers_cat:
Kelly sucks. Everyone needs to admit that.
schrodingers_cat
@JPL: The wider strategic goal is to slash legal immigration, for starters.
schrodingers_cat
@Doug!: You won’t get any objection on that from me.
Hill Dweller
@schrodingers_cat: Yep. Kelley wants no immigration, legal or otherwise.
JPL
@Hill Dweller: I’m beginning to think that Kelly wants a white america like god intended.

@Dr. Bloor: But the line is “…hiding in Honduras,” isn’t it?

TPS has already been revoked for Nicaragua. I don’t know much about how earlier administrations have handled TPS before.

At least the elections that took place Tuesday gave me relief that the people in the US weren’t all racist pieces of shit who bought the hatred used to win elections. So sad important cogs in this administration still want to go there. Kelly…..hmmm…Irish isn’t it? Seems to me they had run across this issue themselves yet he’s forgotten that. Guess he thinks his family was special. Priviledged even. Typical Trumpie.

@The Thin Black Duke:

Well, sounds like Elaine Duke is going to try to get out with her dignity still intact. But Kelly stands truly revealed. Again.

So, I’m going to ask. Does anyone know an actual immigration lawyer blogger who could explain this situation clearly and what the immigrants caught up in this situation could have done or could do? From what I can tell, these immigrants have been here since Hurricane Mitch in 1998, which was indeed a devastating hurricane. I’m not certain, but after 20 years, these currently legal immigrants are about to become illegal. During that period, did they have an opportunity to become permanent residents, or is the “rule” of this status that one can not apply for permanent status? How were these immigrants covered under Obama’s reform? It does seem nuts to live under an immigration status that needs to be renewed every 18 months for 19 years.
Another Scott
@Peale: I can’t answer your questions.
A good place to start to get more information, though, might be NOLO.
HTH a little.
Cheers,
Scott.

@Peale: Greg Siskind is a good resource. Getting a green card is very difficult in most circumstances, especially via a job and no close familial connection (spouse, parent or child)

You’re right, it’s hiding.

Americans of Irish descent who fight the immigration of other groups seeking to escape oppression, terrorism, and famine are building up one hell of a karmic debt. I know some people like this, and they are shockingly pathological.

@Ruckus:
Since Pope Francis hails from Argentina, I’m pretty sure he doesn’t recognize Kelly’s God, either, even though Kelly claims to be a Roman Catholic.

@Xenos:
I am of recent Irish descent on both sides of my family. It seems to me that after 1000 years of oppression by the English, and further oppression when they first arrive on American soil, people of Irish descent often react either by swearing they will never be oppressed again and are determined join their former oppressors in berating those who they now can look down on — people like Kelly, or Bill O’Reilly, or Sean Hannity. Or, the other side of that coin are people who decide that oppression is bad for everyone and become serious liberals, like the Kennedys, or George Clooney, or my totally liberal (but very unknown) family. I am embarrassed by the former and wish they would remember where they came from.

Tell Kelly to stay in his fucking lane and plan the White House dinner parties or whatever the fuck he’s supposed to do. Why the fuck is the WH Chief of Staff giving out orders regarding immigration policy? Chain of command, Kelly, maybe you should know something about that.
