Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Take your GOP plan out of the witness protection program.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Infrastructure week. at last.

We still have time to mess this up!

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Here’s fodder for the Apple haters: I’ve been attempting to connect/upgrade four iPhones today, and it has been hellish. Since approximately 2:30 pm ET.

We introduced an iPhone X to our group of four and swapped the next three units’ apps, photos, settings, phone numbers, etc. What a fucking nightmare. ALWAYS go to the store.

Anyhoo, I sincerely hope your evening is going better. Open thread!

@Mnemosyne: I saw in an earlier thread that you have a huge crush on otters, but before you rush up to snorgle one, you might want to read this Vox piece:

The case against otters: necrophiliac, serial-killing fur monsters of the sea. There’s some pretty awful stuff in there; here’s a less nasty bit:

A male approached a pup floating on the surface while its mother was diving for food. The male forced the pup under water as if trying to drown it. When the female surfaced, the male stole her food (a clam), after which the female and pup quickly departed.

The human equivalent of this is probably going to a grocery store parking lot, finding a woman coming out with a small child, and holding a gun to the kid’s head until the mom gives you some of her food.

I was disappointed, I always thought they were cuddly.

The only reason to ever go to the Apple store is Dr Kevorkian is permanently booked. Every single time I’ve been I’ve had to deal with morons who know less than I do about an OS I don’t care for in the first place. I have never had an Apple problem that any employee there could solve without calling tech support and skipping over a few levels.

I used to say that Apple products are great when they work, and they usually do, but they’re much harder to figure out when they break (compared with their competitors). Over the past several years I think Apple quality has gone down significantly, though, so the latter issue is more prominent.

I’m typing this on a Mac, and my main phone is an iPhone, but that’s more inertia than anything else.

    March 27, 2018 at 9:04 pm

@Betty Cracker: Actually I had something similar happen when I upgraded my iPad in December. Despite having done a full back up via iTunes, when I went to set the new one up specifically selecting set up from an existing backup via iTunes, it didn’t move everything. I got all the apps. All the music and videos. My email settings and everything moved without issue as did bookmarks, favorites, and reading lists. Pictures and files in pages, keynote, and numbers did not make the transition. So I had to manually select them and airdrop them into their proper places.

I took my Mom to the Apple store a few weeks ago to upgrade her iPad. I mentioned this to the sales person and she said it sounded like an OS issue. She says they get occasional reports that this happens on new devices. When I got home that night and set up the Mominator’s new iPad – same process as I did for mine – everything moved without an issue at all. All the apps, settings, photos, music, files, etc moved over via the iTunes set up. Not a single hiccup.

I get irritated that Apple devices want to share stuff by default that I choose not to share. My iPhone loads apps that I put on the iPad, that make no sense on the small screen. My desktop tells me iPhone is ringing. I don’t want my phone alerts showing up on the computer.

I know you can turn this stuff off, but it irritates me that I have to go through extra steps to research how, and that TMI is the default.

So I stopped taking my local newspaper about 3-4 years ago (Gannett had bought it years ago and turned it into USA Today Local – the content was shit). Every so often over the last decade, I’ve gotten occasional hand-delivered hate mail because I’m an abrasive, unabashed and outspoken liberal from an old labor perspective as to local online communities – I’m nearly IWW in economic perspective, pro-reparations (although my youngest daughter views me as the lesser incarnation of TrumpClinton because I really don’t give a flying fuck about about letting my life revolve around the trans community, gender pronouns or hurt feelings about how I don’t ask people their preference on gender pronouns). There’s a local klukker leader about 7 miles away, and he does have a following.

Anyway, yesterday my mailbox was open when I came home. As I arrived, I noted that a newspaper was hanging out. The headline was about how white supremacist recruiting in the area is on the upswing. Today, there was no paper – I didn’t expect one.

Fuckers are stepping up their game. My mil grade long guns need a trip to the armorer (this is expensive, I’m cheap), but I’m happy to do so whilst loading up and practicing with the more modern goodies. In the meantime, I’m keeping a careful eye on the dog and locking the house down hard on a daily basis.

(Federal authorities did not) pursue charges in Sterling’s death, but they provided Sterling’s family with new details about his death.  After meeting with investigators, Chris Stewart, the lead attorney for the Sterling family, told reporters that evidence shows that at the beginning of the interaction with Sterling, Officer Salamoni put his gun to Sterling’s head, and said, “I’ll kill you, b—-.”
Video of the following 90 seconds shows officers telling Sterling to put his hands on the hood of a car. When he did not, a struggle ensued with Salamoni pulling out his gun and pointing it at Sterling’s head and later Lake shooting Sterling with a taser.

All before they forced him down, then murdered him and then searched his pockets for an unseen weapon.

Ah, memories. The Babbage stores were worth going to regardless, simply for the rococo decor.

@Betty Cracker: When I got mine, I just laid one on top of the other when it told me to during the set-up. It switched all my apps, contacts and photos. It also put all my photos into albums, which i had never done before.

(Democratic) senators said they (sent) letters to individuals who are in the line of succession if Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein “were to either resign or be removed.”

Identical copies went to Solicitor General Noel Francisco, Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Counsel Steven Engel, Assistant Attorney General for the National Security Division John Demers, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina Robert Higdon and U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Erin Nealy Cox.

The senators are asking the DOJ officials to provide a written and public commitment to refuse to interfere in Mueller’s investigation.

@Dorothy A. Winsor (formerly Iowa Old Lady):

Surprise!! When you get a credit card with a “chip” you can’t swipe them anymore, you stick the end with the chip into a reader and wait for the reader to tell you when to pull it out.

    @J R in WV:

For a little while. Then the connections to the “chip” get loose or worn, and the chip reader says to swipe, then rejects the swipe, and says “chip card detected, insert chip card”,

But the “tap and go” still works.

So then you get a new card, that lasts a year or so.

Prior to the chip, I had the same Bank Card and Credit Card for 21 years, but they made me replace it with a chip card.

@dmsilev: speaking as someone who learned what little programming I know during the punch card era, Yes.

Also, if you were part of a midnight chad** fight, it would be weeks before you dug all those things out of your pockets.

**assuming chad is the right term for those little punch-out pieces

@Waratah: I believe you can use SMS or MMS (the original messaging system) with iMessage only through a cellular connection. Or you can turn on Continuity. See https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204681. Or download the iOS 11 iPad user guide at the iBook store. HTH and search for SMS or MMS.
