Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Also, are you sure you want people to rate your comments?

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

If you don’t believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn’t freedom, it is privilege.

American history and black history cannot be separated.

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

T R E 4 5 O N

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Let there be snark.

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

Speaking of National Prayer Day…

Trump says U.S. more religious now than under Obama: "You notice the big difference between now and two or three years ago?"

— Jim Acosta (@Acosta) May 3, 2018

This is like a pilot on a plane that’s going down bragging that more of his passengers are praying to God https://t.co/4ccoVPJbXh

— Jess Dweck (@TheDweck) May 3, 2018

Hypocrite-in-Chief stands forth for his guy:

Vice President Pence tells CBN he has "lost count of the number of times that the president has nudged me, or nudged another member of the cabinet and said 'Let's start this meeting with prayer.'"

— Tim Alberta (@TimAlberta) May 3, 2018

And, of course, this is just fine with the Media Village Idiots…

Fireworks today.

.@AprilDRyan: You were blindsided by the news of that the president repaid Michael Cohen for the $130K hush payment to Stormy Daniels.

Sarah Sanders: "With all due respect, you don't know how I feel."

April Ryan: I've been here 21 years, I know how this works.

— Yamiche Alcindor (@Yamiche) May 3, 2018

"We give the very best information we have at the time," Sarah Sanders says, when asked why the White House and Trump often say things that are not accurate.

— Josh Dawsey (@jdawsey1) May 3, 2018

Sanders said this in March: "I've had conversations with the president about this. There was no knowledge of any payments from the president and he's denied all of these allegations." https://t.co/iwG7OK2rPj

— Abby D. Phillip (@abbydphillip) May 3, 2018

CNN's @DavidChalian after briefing: "Circle May 3rd on your calendar, because this is the day that we will look back on, in this briefing, where Sarah Sanders made it so painfully clear that she has lost credibility with the American people, with the reporters in that room."

— Michael Calderone (@mlcalderone) May 3, 2018

So @michelleisawolf was right after all, @DavidChalian? https://t.co/1a5yxW0mcG

The corporations that “own” the reporters are starting to get worried about Trump. They are still right wing, of course, but they are getting a little bit nervous. The reporters are still in the “access” business, not the news business. Maybe one day enough of them will get back to journalism so that Russia can’t manipulate so many people so easily. Watching BBC’s Hardtalk and then watching interviews on TV here is illuminating.

I’m a bit steamed right now. I can’t do a whole bunch here in the deep red end of NE about Trump and the national other than to cheer all his administration to go down and soon.

However, I can be a local rabal rouser. We have a 10 year Econimic Development Plan ending that was slated to repave 9 specific blocks at a cost of $1,000,000 – half from a self-imposed sales tax and half from the City. 5 of the 9 blocks have been completed and came in at roughly half a million – just like it was supposed to.

Tonight, our City Manager basically said we had @ $200,000 dollars to work with, which would be the tax half of the funds. When asked where the rest of the funds that were promised he basically said “What $250,000? Who promised you that? Aren’t there other projects you want to spend that money on?” And more weaseliness. I have the actual City Council resolution from the Legal Notices section of the paper, but neglected to bring it along ‘cuz I was hoping not to need it. Silly me.

Anyway stuff will be hitting the local paper and facebook etc. But is there more we can do to get them to honor that resolution?

    Well,

If you follow Harry Frankfurt’s trichotomy, Trump is a bullshitter, not a liar. To lie requires intentional negation of the truth, while Trump has never given a rat’s ass about whether what he says is true or not.

Truth: “Two plus two is four.”
Lie: “Two plus two is five.”
Bullshit: “You say two plus two is four? Maybe with your twos, but I’ve got the biggest most beautiful twos you’ve ever seen, believe me…”

Oh…and I swear I am going to bed, but ya’ll know I’m got a Hallmark movie addiction right? I’ve weaned myself off of them slowly, but I do fall off the wagon from time to time…but mostly, I haven’t watched any new one in months.

I do however watch my daily rerun of Golden Girls on Hallmark channel, so I do still see previews for their newest and “greatest” movie premiering whenever.

As much as I “stan” for Hallmark movies, the lack of diversity in them does stick in my craw, which is one of the reasons why I’ve given up on them mostly, but this newest movie premiering on the day it’s premiering… had rolling my eyes soo hard.

So on May 19, on the day Prince Harry will be marrying Ms. Meghan Markle…Hallmark is premiering yet another girls meets Prince love story…with as you probably already guessed it…NO DIVERSE CASTING what so ever…

Ugh…darn you Hallmark…do you even try for diversity…Lifetime sure manages to do it well…but ya know what Hallmark… you do you boo boo…do you…

    Good night BJ peeps.

The Cavuto Mark, from our very own lexicon:

Cavuto Mark – A question mark used to speculate on a false claim, thus allowing Fox News to run incendiary chyrons without needing any facts to support the claim. The use of punctuation to cover for what would otherwise be a baseless (and libellous) accusation: “Dick Cheney hunts black men” would be wrong. “Dick Cheney hunts black men?” is okay. Perhaps rhetorical, perhaps slanderous — we examine the controversy; you decide! Coined by Jon Stewart after Fox’s Neil Cavuto

:“…Cavuto’s not saying these things. He’s just asking, like, ‘Is your mother a whore?’ What? I’m not saying she’s a whore. I’m just wondering out loud if she is a whore. All I’m saying is that reasonable people who have banged your mother for money can disagree.”

Americans – even those who don’t watch Fox News Channel – are truly brainwashed and insulated from the much bigger picture outside our borders. He spoke also this parable to certain people who were convinced of their own righteousness, and who despised all others. “Two men went up into the temple to pray; one was a Pharisee, and the other was a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed to himself like this: ‘God, I thank you, that I am not like the rest of men, extortioners, unrighteous, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week. I give tithes of all that I get.’ But the tax collector, standing far away, wouldn’t even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

I’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest that the prayers Pence is talking about resemble those of the Pharisee, in that they generously tongue bathe Trump regardless of whatever false humility and requests for guidance they contain. Even without Trump’s demonstrated behavior, Pence’s humblebrag about the quantity of prayers is a dead giveaway.

I would love to know why Giuliani is back.

He was very prominent in the campaign. Was part of the transition. Could have taken his pick of head of DHS, DoJ etc. Probably could have made tens if not hundreds of millions with contracts to his businesses.
Then suddenly he quits the transition. On the same day (Dec 9) that the CIA concluded that the Russians had helped Trump win the election.

My guess is Rudy wasn’t really aware of the level of Russian involvement. He thought his work with the NY FBI was standard GOP ratfucking. December 9 he figures that there is actually going to be a serious investigation of this and Comey is furious.
So he bows out immediately and lays very very low.
    Until now.

My guess is he figures he is a target (in the real if not legal sense) , is likely going down and his only hope is to help Trump win this extrajudicially,

If they understood what they're doing they'd have to change what they're doing.
People hate that; they'll do *anything* to avoid acknowledging karmic burden.
    Anything but that

So they pretend not to know what they do. Especially to themselves.
You might say they only fool themselves.

    @joel hanes:
You have a point, but I think a bigger reason is that Republicans lie constantly. Trump is not weird in that, he’s just so petty and inconsistent even the willfully blind have trouble not seeing it. Refusing to call out lies is necessary to pretending the Republican Party, it’s policies, and the motivations of its electorate are legitimate. The press are overwhelmingly Republican. Their personal buddies, who are Republicans, lie to them constantly. Following the road of admitting Republicans lie leads to scary places like “I am a racist and I go to barbecue parties with a man who wants to kill as many Americans as possible.” They bend themselves in pretzel knots to avoid it.

@But her emails!!!: Pence is the type of “Christian” and there are so many of them who lie all the time and think that God is OK with all of their lies. They lie to “look good” and the lying gets them things like being VP so in their eyes God must approve of them lying.

@efgoldman: Bob Somerby would support Haberman, on the theory that if you go beyond reporting that statements were false and try to say someone lied you’re moving from reporting facts to reporting someone’s state of mind, which is a more difficult playing field for reporters than simply sticking to the facts.

    1. In many cases they don’t even bother to point out the statement is false, they just regurgitate it and let it stand at face value.
    2. They seem to have less of a problem with doing this or at least suggesting it when a Democrat is involved. Why, I remember Keratingate as if it were just last week.

The FTFNYT is very careful how they use the word, and it’s never against. Republicans.

Vice President Pence tells CBN he has “lost count of the number of times that the president has nudged me, or nudged another member of the cabinet and said ‘Let’s start this meeting with prayer.'”

This is so heartwarming, particularly when you recall how Jesus himself observed that the people who put on a big show of praying in public are the truly pious ones.

The daily press briefing really just needs a permanent Ron Howard narrator’s voice-over going “None of that was remotely true…” or “actually, it wasn’t….” after each thing Sanders says.

@lollipopguild: Don’t forget the biggest hypocrite of them all, Scott Pruitt, who is perhaps the most corrupt administration official in modern US history and…of COURSE…a self-proclaimed evangelical Christian who basically clawed his way up the political ladder in Oklahoma by out-Christianing his opponents at every turn. What a scumbag.

    @Frankensteinbeck:

    The press are overwhelmingly Republican.

I don’t think that’s the problem. I would suspect that to the extent journalists are personally politically active, there’s probably a good-sized tilt towards being registered Democrat. The problem with that, though, is that they then feel they have to go to great lengths then to be “balanced” towards conservatives, which entails not explicitly calling out the raging bullshit that folks like Sanders spews on a daily basis. Combined with the corporate press’s desire not to rock the boat and either 1. lose advertisers or 2. become the targets of some talk radio host’s rage at the “lie-brul media!!1!” (aka “working the refs”) and you have a MSM that is, as many have observed, structured to favor Republicans. Knowing they won’t be called out or questioned for flat-out lying or just saying crazy shit, their claims get mainstreamed.

    @Jay Noble:

File a lawsuit, and name the City Manager personally, just for starters. Obviously name the city government as a whole as well as the City Manager for obviously spending that money illegally, after it was already allocated for a different purpose.

I’m assuming your group has a lawyer member who can do the work pro bono if necessary, but your suit should demand repayment by the City Manager for all fees and costs of the suit. City managers in general are not rulers by fiat, they have to follow the budget as approved, for example.

Also seek in the suit to have the City Manager who you name fired for cause…as in failure to abide by a legally binding agreement.

In fairness to Sanders, Ron Zeigler set a high bar for obfuscation when he termed Nixon’s lies as being very suddenly rendered “inoperative”. She can never top that, and probably knows it. I’ll tell you something else she probably knows, too: Ron Zeigler was neither indicted nor imprisoned while others around the Trickster dropped like flies….
