Lily is fine and everything went well at the doctor, my knees and shoulder hurt, and I have to put in a fucking rain garden because my drainage options are basically nonexistent.

I’ll be back tomorrow.

Drainage, if you are in a low spot it gets complicated. Swales and French drains and a shitload of material to direct the water. Sorry you got to deal, JC. Pots and boxes on pallets, or go hydroponic? Giant koi pond?

I would get another opinion on any drainage issue.

Well, actually I have gotten several opinions on Ohio Family’s house’s drainage options, mainly from landscapers giving quotes — we have a huge puddled area in our front yard, and a couple of big maples to take into account. There are a couple of different approaches we can take, some sounding like better bets than others. The swale and rain garden is probably what we’ll go with.

So, moles have moved into the dog yard. I told my husband it is futile to scold the beagle mix, she is doing what she must to defend her turf. While he agreed, he still felt he had to lecture her about it.
So as he goes around filling the cavernous holes with the voluminous mounds, he asks her why she feels she has to dig to China. She’s kinda a dumbass, and she’ll get lost on the way and end up in some Asian country where they eat doggies like her. And ornery doggies like her are spicy! Some of those Asian dishes are really spicy too. So she better be careful and stop digging, because when she comes out on the other side of the world, why wouldn’t they gobble up a spicy sausage like her who pops up in their garden like a naughty gopher?
I don’t think she got the message, do you?

I have strongly suspected ever since this story broke that the end game is for these kids to be declared “orphans” and turned over to the Quiverfull nutjobs.

And if any of them question anything when they get older, it will turn out that their fosterers “forgot” to file for citizenship for them and never legally completed the adoption (because they don’t need to obey Caesar’s laws!) so the kids will be deported back to their home countries if they even hint at wanting to break away from the family.

Watched it when it was on Netflix and found it thought-provoking (although the final season was a lesser effort). Probably as close to a thinking man’s zombie series as one can get. Speaking of song-and-dance men, last night I was enormously privileged to attend an event to celebrate songwriter Richard Sherman’s 90th birthday, and part of the entertainment was 92-year-old Dick Van Dyke performing a Mary Poppins medley with his barbershop quartet, the Vantastix.

This is pretty close to what we saw, but there was one addition — at one point towards the end, Van Dyke started rapping the lyrics. And he was pretty good! (I suspect he was influenced by you-know-who since they brought Van Dyke in to work on Mary Poppins Returns.)

If it ever gets posted anywhere on the internet, I’ll link to it, but there’s a good chance it may have to disappear into the Academy’s archives because of the music rights.

I’m still taking care of my neighbor’s cats. I pet them when I arrive but then I have to start getting their food. As the week has gone on one of them has decided he needs more attention. I pet him for awhile and the instant I turn away I feel this whap! on my leg from his paw. I turn around and he’s looking at me all innocent like with those big eyes. I pet him some more and then turn to walk away and whap! I guess he’s training me pretty well. It’s kind of funny.

They were fairly standoffish initially but at this point they’re practically on top of me when I walk through the door. It’s taking as long to pet them as it is to get the food and so forth.

In commentary, I will no longer refer to them as “detention centers”. In the spirit of “Hoovervilles”—a brilliant coinage by a DNC official in 1931—they should be called “Trump Hotels”—which will drive Trump nuts. If that’s too subtle, “baby jails” and “kid cages” will do.

And yet, Jimena is still in detention. And she still has not been allowed to speak to her mother on the phone:

The shelter worker, who would not provide her name, said that at one point, when Jimena’s mother called from an immigration detention facility in Port Isabel, Texas, the little girl was in a mandatory “Know Your Rights” workshop and couldn’t be excused to take the call. The shelter worker said the mother, who has very little money to pay for phone calls and spotty access to a telephone, was told to call back. (emphasis mine)

“I can’t say exactly why we haven’t been able to get Mom to talk to her daughter,” the shelter worker said. “But we are hoping to get Mom on the phone with her soon.”

It just gets worse, don’t it. Anecdata: when we adopted our second from an orphanage in Bolivia, there was a religious family (WWJD T-shirts) adopting a girl at the same time. We did it because we wanted a family, I think they did it because they wanted to feel holy by saving an orphaned girl. I heard later that they gave her up and the US adoption coordinator raised her. My son is doing fine.

Bottom line: I expect these quiverfull people will be adopting for totally the wrong reasons and it ain’t gonna turn out well for either the kids or the adoptive families.

They have neither one of them ever been on a train before, but we live at the second to last stop for the Metrolink, so we’d have to leave at the crack of dawn, and Amtrak costs a fortune and is confusing as hell about wheelchair access.

Rain gardens aren’t terrible. My daughter’s school has one (like you, it’s the local minimum, they had no fucking options, so a rain garden) known as the “little bowl” to distinguish it from the “big bowl” full of mud and ball playing. There are a couple of dry wells, boulders, and various native-to-New-England shrubs and grasses and such. ALL PERENNIALS. Off limits to the little ones so that they don’t jump off of the 4-foot retaining wall.

In your case, you won’t have to worry about pre-kindergartners, and I’m pretty sure that if Thurston is still alive (he is, right), then this is doable. My next hell garden project starts next week, so I will sympathize with your plight.

You could just do some touristy things like go to the Santa Monica pier or go look at the stars on the Hollywood walk of fame. Maybe go up to the Griffith Observatory?

Depending on what they like to do, maybe put together a trip to some thrift/resale stores, give them a small budget and see what they come up with. Or go to a Farmer’s Market. The San Diego Airport offers free tours.

Have you had them come up with a list of what they want to do? Make a game of it. Free things, under $10 things, under $20 things and so forth.

So, it was a full night of both sides Broderism on my cable tv:

    1. First off, at the end of his CNN hour, Chris Cuomo, although really tough on Trump, chastised the Congress and ended by saying” All of you will be remembered for your cowardice in November. He was speaking of both Dems and Republicans.

    2. Then, Brian Williams had Robert Costa (whom they all love, but you gotta figure he’s a true conservative since has better access to the GOP, including Trump, than almost anyone else) and Jeremy Peters of the NYTimes, who really got my hackles up when he pretty much blamed Dems equally for the inability to pass any immigration reform legislation for the last 30 years, and referred to the 10 to 20% of very extreme leftists who want open borders and the somewhat less extreme on the right. What elected Democrats want “open borders”? Sheesh, I really don’t like that guy.

    3. Brian Williams (who also has been tough on Trump) said that neither McConnell nor Ryan nor Schumer and Pelosi can be counted on to come up with a compromise and solution on immigration. That none of the 4 of them will be eligible for Profile in Courage Rewards at the end of 2018.

Somebody please educate me. Why do Democrats get blamed for ANY of this? I simply don’t see any supporting evidence for that. Or do they really want the Congressional Republicans to negotiate and craft an immigration bill amongst themselves and for enough Democrats to vote for the bill so that it can pass? It’s as if they’re buying in to the unceasing Trump attacks on Democrats. Shades of Nazi Germany. I am gobsmacked.

    June 22, 2018 at 12:17 am

@dww44: it was barely four months ago that trump blew up another bipartisan immigration bill, it was IIRC two days after he told a big group of Senators and MoCs that he’d take the heat, he had the guts they didn’t, etc. Paul Ryan never wanted to bring that bill to the floor, the recent discharge position, the Gang of 8, or however many, from (again, IIRC 2014)… if there’s any issue that doesn’t lend itself to both-siderism, it’s immigration.

Jeremy Peters is smarm on legs, but I always get the sense that Costa plays it straight. Williams probably talked about The Coat more than any other MSNBC host tonight, I was kind of surprised to see David Jolly get worked up about it.

@dww44: Of COURSE they can’t come up with a “compromise solution”, Brian Williams, you dim wit. It’s spaghetti vs tire rims n’ anthrax for dinner, what’s compromise??!?

Why don’t the reporters do their jobs and present each party’s plan for immigration reform side by side? Let voters see if they have a preference. Let them see how impossible it would be to “compromise” with the POC-hating psychos in the GOP.

And above all else, let’s focus on what side is actually DOING:
    – Dems: trying to lean on the president* to stop a policy he started, organizing, trying to see what is happening in these shelters
    – Reps: condemning it and doing nothing (even though they are in the majority in BOTH houses), blaming Democrats for Trumpov’s policy, Trumpov himself claiming Dems ‘want MS-13 to come in so they can be Dem voters’ (FU for that one btw, jerk)

We need to beat on the media almost as much as we need to beat on the Republicans.

@Jeffro: yep. It’s like they just think of immigration being about illegal aliens, and therefore one side must want open borders and the other side must want closed borders and anything that smacks of semi-open borders must be the right choice. Since the GOP doesn’t want to let anyone in, the Dems must be opposed to the bill because they want everyone in. It’s just dumb.

@dww44: I think you should call CNN and chew them out for emitting BS and untruths.

There is NO need for ANY Congressional action to solve the Trump bably concentration camp disaster. The Trumpsters have just lied about this. When challenged to cite the Obama law, they just said, oh well, hell, never mind, it was a GW Bush law. Both are damned lies.

The only law Congress needs to pass is one that forbids separating families and forbids creating baby concentration camps.
The Trump administration created this crisis out of thin air, and he can solve it without Congress doing jack squat.

There is no border crisis, there is no crisis upswing in undocumented crossing or asylum requests, there is no law forcing Trump to separate families or create baby concentration camps. Tell CNN to do its damn job and report out the facts or they have lost your business forever. I’d be polite, but not overly polite about it.

Edit: what the hell is Brian Williams, who is either a depraved liar or a mentally unbalanced fantasist doing back on the air pretending to be a news reporter?

I had to look up the definition of a rain Garden because, well, I live in Arizona. We do have occasions to deal with too much rain. In Fact we have flooding here when it actually rains, which is in very rare circumstances. Particularly since climate change has ensured that we have no actual monsoon season when we should have a monsoon season. Nevertheless we have drainage options out here. A rain Garden is not one of them.

@Mnemosyne: This worries me as well, especially since the quiverfull lunatics focus on keeping female children “pure and godly” (translation: isolated, uneducated, clueless, frightened teenage virgins) and marrying them off to often older men who strike some sort of agreement with the young girl’s male relatives.

Their excuse is that it is “God’s plan” to have girls married off and homebound / reproducing as young as possible. (This is the same kind of vile, misogynistic christian- right horror that Roy Moore and likeminded creeps were spouting to try and excuse his vile behaviors.)

When I worked in the rural South, I saw girls getting pulled out of high school and college to be married off because of this quiverfull nonsense. The girls had been totally brainwashed from an early age, and interestingly, many of them were kids who had been internationally adopted through religious agencies. Any girl who resisted the craziness would be pulled out for “home schooling purposes” and effectively disappeared.

So, I second your suspicion. Where are those missing preteen and young teenage girls?!
