Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

I desperately hope that, yet again, i am wrong.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Fucking consultants! (of the political variety)

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

Finding joy where we can, and muddling through where we can’t.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

Cancel the cowardly Times and Post and set up an equivalent monthly donation to ProPublica.

The arc of the moral universe does not bend itself. it is up to us to bend it.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

White supremacy is terrorism.

On the Road and In Your Backyard

On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.

From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.

Submit Your Photos

Good Morning All,

This weekday feature is for Juicers who are are on the road, traveling, or just want to share a little bit of their world via stories and pictures. So many of us rise each morning, eager for something beautiful, inspiring, amazing, subtle, of note, and our community delivers – a view into their world, whether they’re far away or close to home – pictures with a story, with context, with meaning, sometimes just beauty. By concentrating travel updates and tips here, it’s easier for all of us to keep up or find them later.

So please, speak up and share some of your adventures and travel news here, and submit your pictures using our speedy, secure form. You can submit up to 7 pictures at a time, with an overall description and one for each picture.

You can, of course, send an email with pictures if the form gives you trouble, or if you are trying to submit something special, like a zipped archive or a movie. If your pictures are already hosted online, then please email the links with your descriptions.

For each picture, it’s best to provide your commenter screenname, description, where it was taken, and date. It’s tough to keep everyone’s email address and screenname straight, so don’t assume that I remember it “from last time”. More and more, the first photo before the fold will be from a commenter, so making it easy to locate the screenname when I’ve found a compelling photo is crucial.

Have a wonderful day, and enjoy the pictures!

Today, pictures from valued commenter Albatrossity.

Last batch from Africa, mostly mammals. Thanks for all the kind comments on the previous batches of images; you jackals are a pretty fine lot.

Golden Jackal in evening light

Taken on 2018-05-20

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

This guy had a den with a couple of pups nearby, so watchfulness was in order

Black-backed Jackal

Taken on 2018-05-21

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Watching a bunch of lions gnawing on a wildebeest and hoping to dash in for some fast food

Bat-eared Foxes

Taken on 2018-05-20

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Strange little creatures who eat mostly termites. It was like finding a herd of Corgis on the Serengeti

Lion and his kill

Taken on 2018-05-19

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

A young male lion and a dead wildebeest. There were no other lions around, so we presumed he hunted this one all by himself. He was certainly guarding it closely.

Ruppell’s Griffon Vulture

Taken on 2018-05-20

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

A truly massive vulture, and this species also holds the altitude record for a bird. One knocked out an engine on a plane flying at 37,000 ft in 1974…

Rocks, lioness and sky

Giraffe and sunset over the Serengeti

Taken on 2018-05-19

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Title pretty much says it all.

Thank you so much Albatrossity, do send us more when you can.

Travel safely everybody, and do share some stories in the comments, even if you’re joining the conversation late. Many folks confide that they go back and read old threads, one reason these are available on the Quick Links menu.

One again, to submit pictures: Use the Form or Send an Email

I was not aware that there were Balloon Juice commenters in the Serengeti, it’s nice to see them in the first two pics. I wonder what their nym’s are.

Wow! Jackals for the jackals. And the giraffe in the sunset is so beautiful, even though it reminds of the black giraffe shot by a lady deplorable that has been all over Twitter. ?

@Miss Bianca: Well, it’s true that your life would be more complete if you took a trip to the Serengeti! It was everything that I imagined, and a lot more.

I am in awe of the quality of your photos. It must have something to do with your talent and experience, but I wonder how much can be attributed to the Leica lens that I remember you mentioning.

    @pat:

The Leica lens enables his ability, but you still have to compose a shot!!

Great job Albatrossity. You have the eye!! just wow!

Outstanding photography. The long legs on that black-backed jackal — I guess he needs to be quick when he’s snatching food out from under lions. Every one of these is framable.
