Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Text STOP to opt out of updates on war plans.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

One way or another, he’s a liar.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Today in our ongoing national embarrassment…

“In this country American means white. everybody else has to hyphenate.”

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

It’s a good piece. click on over. but then come back!!

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

We will not go back.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

All hail the time of the bunny!

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

The willow is too close to the house.

My new thing is to try to get good pictures of Rosie. They’re not very easy to get because she shares both my disposition and my feeling about cameras, but I got two good ones tonight:

She looks rather peaceful and happy, which lasted all of about ten seconds because I moved in for a close shot and she immediately started to look away because she was just OVER my shit:

She’s a good dog.

I guess I’ll just postpone my Samwise thread then :)

    That’s beautiful picture.

Foolish question, you probably turn the camera sound off on your phone/device to take her picture right? My dog avoided the phone and ipad like mad when it was pointed at him because he hated that noise. Eventually I tuned in to the reason and turned it off.

    Open thread? Curioser and curioser.

A model and escort from Belarus who caused a sensation by claiming to have information linking Russian interference to the election of President Donald Trump said Monday that she no longer has the evidence and will not talk about it.

Anastasia Vashukevich, who also uses the name Nastya Rybka, pleaded not guilty to charges of soliciting and conspiracy to solicit in a court appearance in the Thai resort city of Pattaya to prepare for her trial along with seven co-defendants. Lawyers will submit legal submissions at another hearing next week at which the court is expected to set a date for testimony to begin.

Vashukevich, Russian self-styled sex guru Alexander Kirillov and six other people were arrested at a sex training seminar in Pattaya in February and have been in custody ever since. All the defendants, who could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted, pleaded not guilty.

Vashukevich told The Associated Press that she had turned over audio recordings to Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, whose conversations about election interference she claimed to have taped.

She has said she provided “escort” services to Deripaska, who is close to Russian President Vladimir Putin and who has links to Paul Manafort, Trump’s former campaign manager now being tried in the United States on money laundering and other charges.

Speaking to an AP reporter in the courtroom in Pattaya, Vashukevich said she had promised Deripaska she would no longer speak on the matter, and that he had already promised her something in return for not making that evidence public. Source

Another good Paul Krugman piece; related to the one a couple of days ago (18 Aug).
The G.O.P.’s Climate of Paranoia (Aug. 20, 2018)

In short, if you followed the evolution of the G.O.P.’s position on climate change (not that Republicans believe in evolution, either), you shouldn’t be surprised at the party’s intellectual and moral collapse under Trump. For Republicans, ignorance has been strength for a long time.

He also includes an interesting point about bad faith arguments and a common characteristic of people who make them:

There’s also, I believe, an additional relevant lesson from the climate story: the special rage of those who knowingly act in bad faith.

Climate denial is a deeply cynical enterprise; the people misrepresenting evidence and sifting through emails for “gotcha” quotes have to know that they’re not being honest. Yet their rage against “elitists” who continue to point out inconvenient truths is very real…

Also of interest is a Eric Levitz NYMag piece today(?): Trump’s Base Has Become Too Delusional for the GOP’s Own Good

For decades now, the conservative movement has sought to keep its core voters confined to a carefully curated media ecosystem — one where the Democratic Party is a Marxist-Islamist organization, America is the world’s most over-taxed nation, illegal immigrants bear sole responsibility for the stagnation of middle-class wages (and/or all violent crime), and there’s never been a better time to buy gold coins.

Original has a bunch of hyperlinks. It manages to cover similar territory without mentioning climate change. TBH, I have a hard time with mental modeling of people who can (and do) coerce their minds to Believe such arguments.

I just read someone’s defense of coal power on strategic grounds. They used the phrase “the bad guys”. Trump diehards have the critical thinking skills of an eight year old on a sugar rush, and have no grasp of the multiple factors pulling their worldview apart. They just interpret Trump as promising no change.

    John,

May I suggest the following for capturing great photo’s of anxious/agile quadrupeds: Video them and then scan through the individual frames until you find the best (there may be many, this is a Warning) and do a screen save. Then delete the video, or save it if you want. Also works great with bipedal hominids and other forms of wonder in nature.
