Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

We will not go back.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

Republicans do not trust women.

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

This fight is for everything.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

You cannot shame the shameless.

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Quote tweet friends, screenshot enemies.

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

Submit Your Photos

Good Morning All,

On The Road and In Your Backyard is a weekday feature spotlighting reader submissions. From the exotic to the familiar, please share your part of the world, whether you’re traveling or just in your locality. Share some photos and a narrative, let us see through your pictures and words. We’re so lucky each and every day to see and appreciate the world around us!

Submissions from commenters are welcome at tools.balloon-juice.com

Have a wonderful day, and enjoy the pictures!

I’n sorry I misplaced Bill’s post but I promise it will be here next Wednesday. Sorry to all!

Today, pictures from valued commenter Doug R.

A recent road trip to visit friends in Calgary with a return via Jasper.

Calgary, Alberta

Since we’re in a city with a LASER projector and Atmos sound, why not check out the new Godzilla movie?

Taken on 2019-06-04 00:00:00

Icefields Parkway, Banff National park.

Visiting done, I thought it would be a nice break to go through Jasper.

Icefields Parkway, Banff National park.

We had decided to leave the 28lb cat at home, she has a hard time fitting in cages. This is the 11.5lb Lord Nibbler who can be a royal pest to her, I think the cats probably appreciated the time apart.

Icefields Parkway, Jasper National park

Deep into Jasper park, the ice gets pretty close to the road even in summer.

Loon Lake rest area, British Columbia

Almost back home in the Okanagan, this is Loon Lake rest area built for about $4.2 million. Running water, flush toilets, wifi, and 2x Level 2 chargers and I think 1x Level 3 charger if I read the info plate right.

Thank you so much Doug R, do send us more when you can.

Travel safely everybody, and do share some stories in the comments, even if you’re joining the conversation late. Many folks confide that they go back and read old threads, one reason these are available on the Quick Links menu.

Once again, to submit pictures: Use the Form

With the upcoming site redesign, there will be many changes and so email submissions are over for now. Once it happens – in weeks, I imagine, there will be a slight interruption while we sort things out. So if you’re sitting on some pictures, now’s the time to submit them, using the form.

The wifely unit is headed to Harrisburg, PA today to sit in on legislative hearings. THIS is being brought up:

    https://grist.org/article/pennsylvanians-demand-a-fracking-halt-until-rare-childhood-cancers-are-investigated/?fbclid=IwAR29OUY7UE6VLkwpClEbHRjZPJ60XcDVirNwd0-wEMbWf-f-dEchE9hOEKo

    The lede:
After a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette investigation identified 47 cases childhood cancer—most of them very rare—in several rural Pennsylvania counties, locals are calling on Governor Tom Wolf to investigate a possible link between fracking and childhood cancer.

She’d just returned from a 2 week excursion from PA into Eastern, OH down to WV and into KY and TN, she’s been documenting the impacts of abandoned legacy oil and gas development for 10 years now and it’s not a very pretty picture. At least for historically significant oil and gas development states like PA and WV.

What was most surprising though, was how much better the management of these no longer viable legacy oil and gas wells were in KY and TN.

PA should be embarrassed. Their legacy oil and gas fields are a disgrace.

Your pictures bring back good memories of a family vacation that included Jasper and the Icefields Parkway. We stayed in a cabin across the road from the Athabasca River. Loved Jasper.

@JPL: Make sure to hike around Lake Louise. If possible, arrange to have bagpiper play while you do it.

O&G bidness is the same here as in TX and OK… they have all the moneys so they make all the rules. I was shocked to discover that DEP’s O&G inspectors are pre-approved by the O&G org before they can go to work. They have no real authority in the field other that to slap a roughneck on the wrist, metaphorically.

Imagine how tough THOSE inspections are!!! Plus, there is only a tiny handful of I&G inspectors, and much of the dirty work is down inn the hole, but for the mud and crude that lands in the pit beside the drilling rig. They used to not even line the pit, I think they’re supposed to now, but in the back country, who knows?

    @Betty:

Thanks Betty, but she’s not going there to get a hearing, she’s going there to video record the lying fuckers.
So that at a future date, she can hold them to account.
