Predicted US lineup except missing Ertz–possible minor injury. Horan scores super early then they play even the rest of half 1. US dominating possession two-thirds to a third, and Tobin Fucking Heath manages to entertain us with this Tobin Heath thing.

@trollhattan: I don’t watch soccer unless the US women are in the World Cup and then only half pay attention — it’s not really my cup of tea. But my sister was a serious player in high school and college, and she thinks our goalie is a weak link and may spell our doom. Do you concur? She seems pretty good to me, but I don’t understand the game all that well…

@Betty Cracker:
First WWC in ages with no Hope Solo back there so new territory for us. Naeher hasn’t been tested much yet, probably has to take NoDoz back there, but has made no obvious errors through 2.5 matches and was the clear #1 keeper among three during the year running up to the tournament. With that said, there are more gifted and taller keepers in this tournament and tall is the future, like, nobody under six feet. Naeher is 5’9″.

Google is showing the Heath goal as an own goal, but the FIFA site has it belonging to Heath, so I’m going with that. {Edit: Now FIFA has it as an own goal as well.}
Also, O’Hara has the U.S.’s first yellow of the tournament.

Press for Lavelle maybe gains more offensive threat. US seems to have slowed Sweden’s right side attack in this half, first half they had a lot of success there.
Speaking of being told to get bent, did Trump really say that the Iranians finger must have slipped to push the “fire” button or perhaps it was an oopsie over a spilled coffee cup? “Mistakes happen, don’t let it happen again”? Bolton must be taking cold showers now and buying salt peter by the Costco sized bag at this point. Poor guy.
Who woulda thunk the voice of reason was gonna be Trump? I get that a war really gets in the way of his real desires (golf, enriching himself) but I’m shocked he’s being rather level headed here.

Sweden may have subbed out their only brunette. Is that legal?
“The United States play Spain in the last 16 in Reims at 17:00 BST on Monday. Sweden play Canada three hours later in Paris.”
Spain has been surprisingly strong but not on the level of the top-tier teams. But…matchups. Sweden-Canada is a nice bonus, should be a terrific matchup.
ETA, if everybody is back after WWC duty I get to see Tobin AND Marta on the same field in July. With bonus Alex Morgan, who like Marta I’ve never seen in person. Fingers crossed!

The US defense looked not terribly impressive, a team with better finish could cause them trouble. I just realized that the brilliant defender Meghan Klingenberg isn’t even on the team any longer. What the hell is up with that? Last WWC, Klingenberg was one of the team’s best players. She managed to defend solidly, nail down the midfield behind Rapinoe, and chip in regularly on the attack. It seems she fell afoul of the coach somehow about 2 years ago and got excluded from the team.

The two halves of the bracket that came out of the preliminary round look fairly uneven to me. The half Germany ended up being in would appear to give them a distinctly easier path to the final compared to the path for the US in the other half. Still, I would assume the final to most likely see the US play Germany for the title.

@smintheus: Apparently Meghan Klingenberg had back injury and bone spur surgery that caused her to miss USWNT playing time. Apparently she wasn’t a favorite of Ellis, either.

@SRW1:
Odd that just four group winners match up with 3rd-place teams but I guess with 24 teams there will necessarily be two 1st v 2nd place matchups in the second round. I was told “no math!” Even so, I doubt France relishes facing Brazil.

@Betty Cracker: Well, Naeher is probably the relatively worst starter the US has. Not that she is necessarily bad, but she isn’t going to make all the game saving saves that Solo did — but Solo for all her other faults was probably the best GK ever in the woman’s game, sort of like Yev “The Black Spider” Yashin

@smintheus: I have yet to watch the game, but Ertz really closes down the opposition offense when she plays def mid and she was held out of today’s game.
I too miss Klingenberg, although she is a little old for an outside defender

gratuitous
@randy khan: I’m not as up on soccer rules as I should be, but I’ve watched that “own goal” several times. I don’t see anyone on the Swedish team who even touched that shot by Tobin Frickin’ Heath (as she’s known in Section 207), let alone guided it into the net. It looked to me like Heath’s kick provided all the power and direction it needed to go precisely where it went.
Of course, if being deprived of a World Cup goal spurs Heath on to make up for it, I’m not going to apologize to any team that takes the brunt of that. If Heath goes off on your team, blame FIFA.
