Where’s My Stuff on a Mobile Device?

I have been getting some questions about how to find things on the mobile device and figured I may as well share the information publicly in case it’s useful.

Where’s my stuff on a mobile device?

When you are in landscape mode on an iPad or tablet, you typically get the whole site looking like it does on desktop.  I say “typically” because the site auto scales based on the screen of the device you are using.

When you are in portrait mode on a an iPad or a tablet, you get the layout for mobile/phones.

In the mobile version, you have nearly all of the same items as the desktop, but you find things in different places.

You have the same navigation items in the white bar at the top that you have on a computer

Most of the right-hand side items on desktop can be found at the bottom of the page on mobile, after the last comment and the comment box.

Items in the category bar are mostly found in the “hamburger”, which is the 3 lines toward the top on the right.

Quick Summary

Between the stuff that’s on the bottom, the stuff that’s in the “hamburger”, and the stuff that’s in the white bar at the top, you have the same capabilities you have on the desktop.

Hot Tip for Navigation on Mobile Devices – White bar at the top

Up Arrow – up to the header at the top

Down Arrow – all the way down to the header

Left Arrow – previous thread (but you don’t see the name of the thread, you just go there when you click)

Right Arrow – next thread (same thing, no thread name; this is transportation to the next newest thread)

COMMENT in the white bar at the top

– takes you directly to the box where you can write a comment.

– it can also be used to take you to all the stuff that’s on the right-hand side on a computer.

REFRESH in the white bar at the top

– this is handy on mobile where you might have to swipe multiple times before you see the browser refresh button

– on a desktop computer, it’s faster if you refresh in the normal way, but this REFRESH still works

    I’m going to give into the hype and get Disney Plus today. Peanut and I will have a ball this weekend watching all sorts of stuff. Sorta happy just thinking about it :)

    de-lurking to comment on Disney + — it’s worth it for the nostalgia factor alone.  I binged watched Darkwing Duck yesterday.  They also have Jeff Goldblum talking about sneakers, so there’s that.

    @rikyrah: I bought in yesterday. Watched the first episode of Mandalorian and Captain Marvel. Both pretty good. In any case, the combination of Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel, Nat Geo, plus others looks unavoidable.

    @jeffreyw: Which problem’s have you been having?  I know you have had some.  I am looking for a no @reply person and a no buttons in text tab person.

    @WaterGirl:  Me too. I generally get no @reply the first time, but do get it the second time. If I then try ‘reply’ to a different comment, I get both @reply1 and @reply2, which is also wrong. iPad, current OS, Safari.

    @WaterGirl: I am still having the “no @reply in text box” problem. It consistently happens only the FIRST time I hit Reply after going to the comment page for a given post. Every time after that, the nym appears (and I get multiple nyms if I go back and hit Reply on multiple comments without posting the reply).

    @WaterGirl: I’m still getting no @Nym when I push the “Reply” button. Always comes up the second time.

    I don’t know exactly what you’re asking, but when I switch to Text mode in the comment editor the formatting buttons go away. (Win10, Firefox.) Also have to press Reply twice to get the @Commenter.

    I believe that’s how it’s supposed to work; that’s how you reply to several people in the same comment. If you want to start over, use the “Clear Comment” button down by the “Post Comment” button.

    Oddly, when I refresh I’m taken to several pages above where I was when I hit the button, either in the floating header or by using the browser address bar icon

    I have the no @reply situation and it’s quite consistent.

    First time on a page if I hit reply, no @reply. Close box, hit reply and the @reply is there.

    Next reply works normal.

    If I leave the page, or go to another post, the routine starts over again.

    It occurs to me that I might get the “no @Commenter” Reply thing because I hop around among several open threads and may be repeating the “first time in a thread” thing.

    Although I just commented in another thread, came here and got the @Commenter first time. Go figure.

    @WaterGirl:  Right now, I get a blank text box, with no Visual, Text or formatting buttons. Also, I get your nym in the old a href format.

    Also, most seem to say they have to hit Reply twice to get the @Nym, I think it should be stated, as a few others already have, that this means first pressing Reply, then the X in the upper right to close the window, and then pressing Reply a second time. The X comes in between. / and yes I am a pedant. ;)

    ETA Ruckus just explained the Reply twice thing far better than I am able.

    @jeffreyw:  I believe you are the one who mentioned Zoom Text  Only, which I am now using, and I suspect that it’s messing up the scrolling when the page is refreshed.  I don’ t think I noticed it before installing the addon.
