Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Everybody saw this coming.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Peak wingnut was a lie.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

This is indeed heartwarming! It is also, to me, hilarious — because the dog is obviously glad to see Mom again, but she has to keep going over to reassure Daddy that she still loves him best.

Our rescue bitch Gloria… well, I’m not saying she’s intensely competitive, but she does lift her leg to pee. She also makes a point of letting me know, on the regular, that she could do a much better job as Alpha Bitch than I do, given the chance.

Like Dr. Koch’s dog, she’s incredibly happy to see me if I go away for a while, but still.

Back from canvassing for Warren. It was fun. We met some very sweet Bernie people who were nice about Warren so I am heartened about November. There finally seems to be a local ground game developing. Door to door canvassing lets people know there IS a ground game.

I really liked Warren’s script and approach. Very uniting.

Thanks to Balloon Juice food threads I finally asked my husband if he thinks cilantro tastes like soap. He said YES(!). So now I know to leave out the optional cilantro and maybe he will be more receptive to some of my more adventurous recipes.

He loves cauliflower, but only if it is draped in cheese. Sigh. He can have the cauliflower, and I will have welsh rabbit on toast, where it belongs.

I have a great recipe for a cauliflower casserole, with rye bread crutons, onions, cheese, and spices as you wish. I grind carroway, fennel etc, black pepper, add garlic, bake until everything is bubbling and browning. A Moosewood Cookbook with a wide variety of different ethnic dishes, I’m thinking the cauliflower casserole is Finnish.

You toast the rye bread, saute the cauliflower and onions, add the rye and ground spices, cheese, sllide it into the oven to melt and brown…

Saw the first candidate specific canvassing event in my local Wisconsin city today. (R-Gallagher, for geographic reference) it was a Pete event at a local shop. I’ve seen League Of women voters around doing registration too, but since we have a judicial primary next week (and actual primary in early April, I think), it was good to see ground game effort on going.

I’m trying not to pick a favorite until after Super Tuesday, and I’m definitely team #BrokenGlass. But good to see positive democratic vibes around.

Via CBC, T learned of a great, fast cooking technique. They are called “sheet pan” meals. Quick prep, everything fast roasted in a 400F oven, Tasty, healthy dinners for 4, 8 or like last night, 12, in 20 minutes. Italian chicken and vedge, yummy. Quick clean up, skip the dishes.

so good that we are going to try most of the recipies, including the vegan ones, and try to adapt some of our favorites to that cooking style, ( eg. Pre Marinating ).

I like cauliflower and cilantro both.

If you blend together chilies, cilantro, ginger and garlic you can use it as a marinade/rub for fish, shellfish, chicken, meat etc. Add other spices if you wish to.

For cauliflower, I roast the florets at 425 with olive oil and lime juice. Then give it a phodni/tarka (season oil at high heat with whole spices)

Heat oil in  pan with a heavy bottom, just before it starts smoking add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, one whole chili, mustard seeds if you have them add curry leaves and hing (asafeotida) and turmeric. When you hear the the seeds sputter toss the roasted cauliflower.

Garnish with fresh chopped cilantro and coconut and a dash of lime.

Cauliflower is the new carb for people who have to avoid the starchy ones.  (Pet peeve:  why is everything a carb now?  It was easier to distinguish between the good carbs and the bad carbs when the bad ones were called “starch” and the good ones were called “roughage.”)

Anyway, sometime in next couple of years, ye Balloon Juice Lexicon oughta be expanded, some new stuf added – Murc’s Law, Wilholt’s Law, eg – and some ‘history lessons’ added to older items.

@schrodingers_cat: I’m established as not a fan of cauliflower, but this isn’t fair. Cauliflower rice is just finely chopped cauliflower whereas soy burgers are super processed to make you forget you’re eating tofu. People have all kinds of reasons for not being able to eat rice – it has a very high glycemic index so it’s really not suitable for people with diabetes and some people, like my mother, are allergic to it – and it can be a nice substitute to use in all the wonderful rice-centric dishes.

Rice is a great accompaniment to Indian style curries because it absorbs the flavor of whatever it is mixed in. I just don’t think that riced cauliflower would stand up to that treatment. But if it works for people that’s fine by me.

A&W’s “Beyond Meat” patty, contains no salt, just like their beef patty or chicken breast. The same salt/spice mix is added as seasoning while cooking, in theory, in the same amounts. YMMV as some of the cooks have a light hand, some, a heavy hand.

I would guess that the retail “Beyond Meat” patties often come “pre-seasoned” like many of the “ready to grill” convenience foods. Up here, for example, I can buy “The Keg” burger patties, in both seasoned and unseasoned frozen forms.

I made the cauliflower buffalo wings for Super Bowl. I made them totally vegan, so vegan butter (it’s called “Earth Balance,” for the sauce) and no blue cheese dip (but I gave my husband and the kids a dipping bowl of ranch and they were good with that). They were TASTY but yeah, probably not the healthiest thing in the world. Heavily battered in seasoned white flour & water, baked at a very high heat and then doused in a butter/tabasco sauce. I recently became full-on vegan (albeit the cheatin’ kind, when I’m feeling like it) so I have kind of a low bar for substitutes but my husband ate the heck out of them and commented that it was nice not having to think about all the veins/gristle you’re sucking up when you eat real chicken wings.

I have to agree with some others here that cauliflower rice and pizza crust is kind of depressing. Maybe it’s just the brands/recipes that I’ve tried. I’d rather have it in big chunks, oily and salty and roasted crisp in the oven until there’s a little char.

A report from Beyond Burger land, in case anyone’s interested. We had them for dinner, got the 8-pack from Costco a week or so ago, thawed some today and my husband grilled them. I’d had an impossible burger at a restaurant a while back (pretty sure it was fried on a griddle) and wasn’t terribly impressed.

However, these Beyond Burgers I really liked. On the grill, they developed a crunchy crust the way a beef burger does, and the inside was red and tender but with a toothsome bounce the way you’d get from a beef burger. We looked through the ingredients and it wasn’t as processed or chemically as the pro-beef folks would have you believe; mostly just organics and grains (pea, carrot, beet, rice, coconut oil, pomegranate, apple); the only ingredient I didn’t recognize was methylcellulose–which, when I looked it up just now, appears to be a common ingredient in thickeners and laxatives, so make of that what you will…. Anyway, my husband, a who loves red meat, said he’d definitely have them again, and the kids ate a whole patty each which is unusual. They lack that intensely oily, dead-animal taste that I think can be overwhelming to kids sometimes (it’s not a flavor that I was even aware of until I became a cheatin’ vegan, but now I recognize it right away).

So the kids insisted that if you did a blind test no one would be able to recognize that they weren’t beef; I don’t know that I’d go that far, but they were definitely very similar. 15% daily value of sodium per patty, so that could be an issue if you are watching salt intake.

My big objection is that they come in about 3 lb of hard plastic packaging. It’s ridiculous. I’d hesitate to buy them again for that reason alone.

    @C Stars: Let me guess – it’s #1 plastic (PET), isn’t it?

We thought we were doing well with our recycling, but recently realized that only #1 bottles are recycled around here.  So the #1 clamshells used for salads and salad fixing and all the rest just end up in the trash.  (The rationale is that the paper labels can’t be removed efficiently, so that and the adhesive makes the plastic worthless to recyclers.)

[eta:] Oh, and the PET used for bottles is slightly different (melting point, etc.) than the PET used for clamshells.

    Grrr….

    Cheers,

    @Sab:

    1 cup flat beer

3 cups rye bread cubes toasted at 300 degrees for 20 minutes

1 head of cauliflower cut into bite sized florets

    2 tablespoons butter

    1 teaspoon carroway seeds

3 cups grated extra sharp cheddar cheese

    4 eggs

    1 teaspoon dry mustard

1/2 teaspoon ground coriander seed or a little more

    black pepper to taste

Saute the cauliflower in butter until just tender and beginning to brown, with carraway seeds. Proportions can easily be adjusted to personal preference. I prefer to grind the carraway seeds in a mortar and pestle a little bit.

Put cauliflower, rye cubes and cheddar cheese in a buttered 2 qt cassarole dish. Beat together beer, eggs, mustard and coriander, pour over cauliflower, rye and cheese. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-45 minutes until puffy and golden brown. Adding some minced garlic is a good addition to taste.
