Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Oppose, oppose, oppose. do not congratulate. this is not business as usual.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

Roe is not about choice. It is about freedom.

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Disagreements are healthy; personal attacks are not.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

How stupid are these people?

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

That meeting sounds like a shotgun wedding between a shitshow and a clusterfuck.

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

Because don’t we all need more penguins?

Penguins in the Amazon?! ??

Some of the penguins went on a field trip to meet other animals at Shedd. Wellington seemed most interested in the fishes in Amazon Rising! The black-barred silver dollars also seemed interested in their unusual visitor. pic.twitter.com/KgYWsp5VQD

The adventure continues! ??
This morning, Edward and Annie explored Shedd’s rotunda. They are a bonded pair of rockhopper penguins, which means they are together for nesting season. Springtime is nesting season for penguins at Shedd, and this year is no different! (1/3) ? pic.twitter.com/VdxN3oQAfe

What a strange environment for a little penguin. Adaptable creature.

So with the Dow down nearly 3K today, we can expect it up about 1.4K tomorrow?  Has the market moved in units less than thousands in the past 5 days?  Am I the only one that finds that simply mindblowing?

Seems unfair that we are all stuck at home, and the penguins get extra roaming time!  :-)

Is respite thread a good place for dark humor? My GF got this off some social media: Wash your hands like you’re cooking for Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Maybe it’s already old, but I did laugh a bit.

This was pretty cute.  LA Times:  Plants to replace your friends.

I almost never go into a bar and get a drink. It just isn’t my thing. So it surprises me how much I want to do exactly that that now that it’s forbidden here in Chicago.

@WaterGirl: Seems like payback. The humans are stuck in cages, the zoo animals roaming free.

Our little city is getting fiber optic installed. As much as I want stupid-fast internet, the drilling and grinding in front of my house today is driving me crazy. They won’t be finished (although I think they’re about to pack up and leave our cul-de-sac) and turn it on until the fall. I’m not a gamer, so I’ll get no utility from the extra speed, but I want it anyway.

I need advice please. I’m scheduled to fly to Tampa this Friday and return Monday. It’s my grandson’s 24th birthday and he wants me down there so much  he paid for my ticket. I’m very torn about going. Over and above the concern about exposure I’m afraid I could get stranded down there if someone decides to ground flights. Thank in advance.

Due to coronavirus precaution, Bob Shellard isn't allowed to visit his wife in her Connecticut nursing home. So he stood outside her window and held up a sign that said "I've loved you 67 years and still do. Happy Anniversary." t.co/cIwZxwmZeN pic.twitter.com/nW86SYm4HU— NBC New York (@NBCNewYork) March 16, 2020

    @Kathleen

Entirely one person’s opinion. The extreme case of all domestic flights being grounded is quite low on the probability scale. I would not dismiss it entirely but neither would consider it such an immediate concern to fret over.

If it helps, explore what the alternatives (bus, train, car rental, transport to alternative airports should one be temporarily put out of service) are in advance.

I could not help but smile at this tweet lower in thread with the penguins. Pity the guys on dating apps who now have to learn to talk to women.
