Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

This really is a full service blog.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

You cannot shame the shameless.

This blog will pay for itself.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

You can’t love your country only when you win.

A last alliance of elves and men. also pet photos.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Bark louder, little dog.

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

In my day, never was longer.

I was promised a recession.

On beyond farce. Ann Telnaes, in the Washington Post (character annotation at the link):
Fat Elvis Trump (Second Time As Farce) - STOCKPILE
(It’s all in the details. Notice the corona-themed decorations, Melania’s jacket, the individual band members…)

Moment of Zen: May 1, 2021 of the Biden presidency. He’s not in the news much. His qualified appointees have been confirmed and are doing their jobs, not looting the country. His ignorant family isn’t running the government. Disinfectant is for cleaning. Ommm

— Mig Greengard (@chessninja) May 1, 2020

Biden and the WH stay out of it and Pelosi and Schumer never had a taste for blood. But there are too many blatant abuses coming out every day in the media to ignore. The line of whistleblowers is long and it turns out the FBI has Twitter. Oommmm

— Mig Greengard (@chessninja) May 1, 2020

VP Kamala Harris is the bad cop, putting everyone on notice that since the GOP abdicated both roles with Trump, the Democrats are now both the law and order party and the national defense party. What’s left of the GOP rediscovers the deficit. Ommmm

I like to think that yes, next May, all of Biden’s appointments will be hard at work repairing the damage that has been done (re-staffing the State Department, reinstating environmental policies and programs, etc.) but I don’t expect to be in a state of Zen.

I’m guessing Corona will, at the least, still be nipping at our heels, and a lot of us will still be reeling financially. We’ll be more cautious about traveling, especially by plane, and about all sorts of other plans and commitments.

I expect to feel more hopeful but not completely at ease. Though compared to today, it all does sound heavenly. May it come to pass!

@lamh36: As a number of experienced archive-searchers have pointed out on Twitter:  If the U of Delaware wants to show these ‘just asking questions’ journalist/ratfvckers all 2000 boxes of unaudited, paper records — many of the hand-written or hand-annotated — and let them dig for what they want… those Heroes of Transparency will lose interest, if not immediately, within the next few tedious hours.

The GOP paid teams of young interns to go through Bill Clinton’s Arkansas archives, which is where the ‘Whitewater!!!’ bs first emerged.  But that was back in the 80s/90s… and Bill had had a relatively short public career, at that point.

The distraction blame game BS the Trumpsters are pulling on WHO and China needs to be stomped on with extreme prejudice. The astroturfed bad faith of the Trumpster/GOP complex has been mainstreamed enough so that, from I’ve heard of it this weekend,  the corporate media is afraid to interview any scientist or public health expert or epidemiologist who knows fuck-all about it (for fear of imbalance), but are interviewing the usual parade of political hacks and operatives, all spouting their own motivated and tendentious horseshit.

I have  a collection of peer reviewed journal articles published in last half of January that gave the world 90 percent of the info it needed to start effective control efforts. And I easily found them on the intertubes in real time as they came out. And, does anyone think that South Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore, and even Japan (though exactly what is up there is hard to figure) all stumbled on control efforts that produced much less and death, much less damage to their economies, much less damage to social and emotional health, and personal liberty, than the US, just randomly? They all just lucked out, right? They all saw the same research we did, starting in the middle of effing January.

Regardless of what bad things China did, fact is, there are too many ways to cross check the numbers, too many independent data sources, to hide the basic relevant characteristics of the epidemic.

I just heard some shithead political operative say that China seriously hampered US efforts to start work on control by not sending out live vaccines. That is total crap. And here again, the brute undeniable historical facts show that assertion to be a damned lie. The Chinese sent out the genetic code almost immediately, German researchers used it to develop a very adequate test for early control almost immediately, which they offered to everyone, and almost everyone took them up on it.

The US, lead by Trump/GOP crimes against humanity (against its own citizens) suspects was sitting with its thumbs up its ass, and continued that obsessive hobby for months.

Repost (a different link) – Senate Democrats:

On NPR’s Morning Edition, Schumer Says McConnell Call To Bankrupt States Amid Coronavirus Pandemic Will Increase Bipartisan Momentum To Deliver Needed Aid For State And Local Governments

    April 24, 2020

Brooklyn, N.Y. – Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer today appeared on NPR Morning Edition, explaining that Leader McConnell’s assertion that states should be able to declare bankruptcy because of the coronavirus pandemic will increase bipartisan momentum to deliver much needed aid from the federal government to state and local governments. Below is a transcript of the interview:

Noel King: Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York is on the line with me. Good morning Senator.

Sen. Schumer: Good morning Noel. I hope you are healthy.

Noel King: Thank you sir, you too. Individual states need aid, they’re losing all kinds of revenue. Lawmakers are considering how to help. Your Republican colleague Mitch McConnell suggested that bankruptcy for states might be the best route. Now you seem not to agree, you’ve made that point. Does he have a point about limiting how many rescues and how much money we can throw at this thing?

Sen. Schumer: Well first of all, what McConnell said was so far out of the mainstream I think he’s going to have to walk it back. He has isolated Republican senators, Republican governors have denounced him, and you know he was the reason that state and local aid was blocked in the interim bill that the president is signing today, he wouldn’t let it go forward. But now that people have seen how twisted his logic, or illogic, is I think actually what he said has given even more momentum for state and local assistance in number 4. After all, Noel, who are we talking about? This is not abstract, you know, state government. Rather, it is police officers who patrol our streets and keep us safe, it’s ambulance workers, it’s bus drivers. These people should not be thrown out of work because the states are not collecting revenues and I hope McConnell comes to his senses, turns around and helps us get state and local, but if he doesn’t, I think there will be the momentum to defeat him. As for the bigger question you asked, what about all of these packages, this is a crisis unlike something we have never seen really in this country. 26 million people unemployed, so many businesses closed, the number one goal is to solve both the healthcare crisis and the economic crisis and it will cost some money. There is a bit of hypocrisy coming out of Leader McConnell, he passed a $2 trillion tax cut mainly for the very wealthy, which did more before COVID to increase the deficit than anything else, so I guess deficits are ok in McConnell’s eyes when its tax cuts for the rich. Remember, they said it would grow the economy, it didn’t. It mainly went for stock buybacks in the corporate side. And so it’s ok to do that to increase the deficit but we shouldn’t help people who are out of work? We shouldn’t find a testing regime which we put in the last bill which the president will sign which will help us get back to work quickly? We have no national focus-

    […]

Schumer is fine. Reid was fine.

The problem is the media is wired for Republicans.

    Eyes on the prizes.

@JMG: You know, the old school politicians knew how to handle this. They’d invite their opponents over to discuss the issues with a drink, and within a few minutes the problem was solved. But we won’t see the likes of the Borgias again.

I’ve wondered about this scenario. Does any other GOP senator have the amoral focus that McConnell has that would allow them to carry on as he did?

Cotton, Ernst, Kennedy, Cornyn, Grassley, Randy, Scott, Shelby, probably a bunch more. Maybe not as much as Moscow Mitch, but I’m sure they’d up their game.

Oh, my, that cartoon makes me feel 16 again reading my first issue of Mad Comics. Every frame was like that, stuff in the background that you had to have some knowledge to get the joke. Mad Magazine was able to keep some of it, but not as much. I’ll have to add Telnaes to my regular comics.

@Kristine: probabaly, but the question is, who has the votes to be senate republican leader it McConnel goes. Sometimes thes amoral power hungry people make sure no one can challenge them, and when they are done, their isn’t a clear successor. I never hear who his leiutenants are but that could just be lousy reporting.

    @phdesmond:
Friend lived late teens/early 20s in a sprawling apartment over a garage (very small estate) owned by his parents, that Al Hirschfeld had lived in for a while. He had painted on all the wallboard walls; some (mildly) racy stuff, in color. Don’t know what happened to all of those wall paintings; he was still alive at the time according to wikipedia. (At least I think it was hirschfeld; memories match the paintings and drawings found in a search. )
Gotta respect somebody who paints their own art on the walls. :-)

    @Ken:

This should be a miniscule 0.05% cut in some obscure tax. If someone questions whether that will really increase growth, explain that you wouldn’t want too big a cut lest the economy be unable to cope with the supercharged growth.

    Homeopathic tax cuts? Brilliant. :-)

    @Brachiator:

Trumpeter Pence seems to have a touch of a nod to Charles Addams.

I, too, thought Pence was drawn to look like Uncle Fester. And I like his being visually linked to the dimmest character in a macabre comic.
