Malaysia’s daily numbers. 13 new cases. 10 cases from local infection: nine Malaysians and a non-Malaysian; seven of the cases including the non-Malaysian are from the same cluster in Johor. Three imported cases: one Malaysian returning from Pakistan, two non-Malaysians arriving from Indonesia and Kazakhstan. Cumulative total 8,897 cases.
Six more patients recovered and were discharged, total 8,600 recovered or 96.7% of the cumulative total. 173 patients with active and contagious cases are being isolated/treated in hospital; two are in ICU, one of them is on a respirator.
One new death. Total is up to 124 deaths: 1.39% of the cumulative total, 1.42% of resolved cases.
There will be a special ministers’ meeting tomorrow to decide whether to reimpose some movement control restrictions, in light of this week’s rise in daily new cases. Any such reimpositions will presumably be announced by Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Ismail Sabri Yaakob at his next media briefing.

Yesterday, China reported 3515 new domestic confirmed cases and 60 new domestic asymptomatic cases.
Urumqi in Xinjiang “Autonomous” Region reported 22 new confirmed cases (only 5 are previously asymptomatic, already under quarantine), and 38 new asymptomatic cases. 2 case in critical condition, and 14 in serious condition. The Urumqi outbreak so far has 137 confirmed cases (135 in Urumqi, 1 each at Kashgar and Xinjiang Condtruction Corps), and 147 asymptomatic cases (all in Urumqi), plus 1 asymptomatic case exported to Shaoxing in Zhejiang Province. There are 7184 close contacts under quarantine and medical observation. due to concerns with false negative results from RT-PCR tests, Ürumqi will start a 2nd round of mass screening of all residents in Tianshan and Saybag Districts (~ 2M people total, or 60% of Urumqi’s population). Screening of other districts continues. Ürumqi currently has capacity to test 600K individuals per day. I think this number includes batching.
Dalian in Liaoning Province reported 12 new confirmed cases and 14 new asymptomatic cases. All 12 confirmed cases are workers at the import seafood processing plant, that is the locus of the outbreak, and all were previously identified as asymptomatic. The outbreak there has a total of 24 confirmed cases and 38 asymptomatic cases, plus 1 confirmed and 8 asymptomatic cases exported elsewhere.
The Dalian outbreak has exported a confirmed case to Tieling in Liaoning Province, yet another worker at the import seafood processing plant. An asymptomatic case was exported to Xiamen in Fujian Province. 4 asymptomatic cases were exported to Jilin Province (3 at Siping and 1 at Changchun). Not sure where the other 3 domestic asymptomatic cases are reported from.
Yesterday, China reported 11 new imported confirmed cases, 8 imported asymptomatic cases, and 2 imported suspect cases:
Hohhot in Inner Mongolia: 5 confirmed and 1 suspect cases, case information not published
Guangzhou in Guangdong: 3 confirmed cases, all Chinese nationals returning from the Philippines,; 1 asymptomatic cases, a Chinese nationals returning from Saudi Arabia
Xiamen in Fujian Province: 1 confirmed case, a Chinese national returning from the Philippines; 3 asymptomatic cases, all Chinese nationals returning from the Philippines
Fuzhou in Fujian Province: 1 asymptomatic case, a Chinese national returning from the US
Tianjin Municipality: 1 confirmed case, a Chinese national returning from Sweden
Qingdao in Shandong Province: 1 confirmed case, a Chinese national returning from the Philippines; 2 asymptomatic case, both Chinese nationals returning from Kuwait
Shanghai Municipality: 1 suspect case, case information not published
Today, Hong Kong reported 128 new cases, 103 from local transmission, 35 of whom do not have clear source of infection identified.

Shit. California may be out of control. However, authorities need to break this down by county and cities within counties.
A recent LA county report suggests that there are increasingly more infections found in younger people.
In Europe, Spain is dealing with outbreaks.
This needs to be followed carefully. Worse case scenario would be that re-opening and putting people together in social spaces will lead to outbreaks despite good mitigation efforts.

There were 767 new cases in the UK yesterday, 710 of which were in England, and 61 deaths throughout the UK.
I went for my first post lockdown hair appointment yesterday and was very impressed with their precautions. Screens between chairs, maximum of 3 customers at any one time, mandatory mask wearing at all times by staff and customers. Disposable towels and gowns used and equipment disinfected between each customer. In addition my temperature was taken on entry and I had to fill out a track and trace form, just in case.
I felt very comfortable and safe and have booked another appointment in 6 weeks time.
FWIW, my hairdresser told me the owner had paid all staff 100% of their normal wage for the period the salon was closed but they had also said that their statutory 20 days paid holiday had been taken during that period.

Australia: Total cases, 14,403. Victoria: Total cases, 8181
Australia: Total deaths, 155. Victoria: Total deaths, 71
Australia: New cases, 475. New deaths today, 10.
Victoria: New cases, 459. New deaths today, 10. (33 in the last 7 days)
Australia (excluding Victoria): New cases, 16. New deaths, 0. Days since last death, 65.
The story of Covid-19 in Australia is the story of the state of Victoria, where the virus is no longer under control.
Some good news is that the number of deaths In Oz from influenza this year to the end of June is 36, a huge drop from 430 last year at the same time. A reduction of 400+ flu deaths vs 155 Covid-19 deaths might seem a good deal were it not for the massive economic damage that we are suffering. Of course, not every flu season causes the same death toll and the uptake of the flu vaccine this year has been higher than previous years.

Scotland reported 27 new cases yesterday, zero deaths. Reading between the lines about half of the new cases came from an outbreak in a call centre on the east side of Glasgow. The rumour mill suggests the Scottish government is not going to relax any of the current lockdown next week. Schools might be given the go-ahead to start the new term from mid-August onwards, with precautions and a warning that local or even nation-wide school shutdowns might be imposed later if necessary.
The surge in Spanish COVID-19 cases has caused the UK government to put Spain back in the list of countries requiring folks returning from travel to undergo 14 days of quarantine at home, but that quarantine is not enforced in any effective manner. This sudden reversal has left a lot of Britons stuck as they had rushed off to Spain for a short holiday and the rules changed while they were there. A lot more folks booked holidays but hadn’t actually left the country. They are now cancelling their holidays but whether they get refunds for flights and hotels is doubtful. The government did make it as clear as they could that the requirement for quarantine for any exempt nation might be reimposed at a moment’s notice and anyone planning to go abroad should take that into account but, well, folks wanted to go on holiday.

@Amir Khalid: Spain has reported a large and sudden increase in COVID-19 case numbers over the past few days (2200 new cases on 24/07). The original UK government decision to put Spain on the no-quarantine-on-return list was based on their lower numbers earlier (390 cases 01/07). Things have changed and they’ve responded quickly.
I’m really hoping the Scottish authorities can keep a lid on the numbers here. We seem to be doing a decent job of it, there’s positive and clear leadership from the top downwards which helps. The forthcoming decision to reopen schools may be problematic though.

Clicking through to the article on the Texas bars’ protest is even more infuriating because their underlying point is kinda/sorta valid: there might be ways a bar could reopen safely (the guy running the protest is saying that he and all the other bar owners have to abide by strict protocols, like taking the temperature of patrons, social distancing (didn’t say masks)). Instead, Abbott just threw them all open in April or May, and then shut them all down in June. If these idiots (Abbott AND the bar owners) had used the kind of sensible protocols (plus masking!) back in April/May to reopen cautiously, things would be very different in Texas.
Bars here in Oregon carefully reopened in the “Phase 2” counties (not Portland and its two surrounding counties, which are still at “Phase 1”) with precautions. By and large the response here (lockdown, followed by careful, phased reopening with clear metrics for pulling back if necessary) has been successful.

From those charts it looks like deaths are trailing new cases by about 1 month right now. That means we’ll likely see increasing death counts until at least the end of August. My guess is the numbers hit 1500-2000 per day by then, which would mean we’d lose another 30-50,000 people to Trump’s stupidity by the end of the summer.
Jinchi
That could backfire seriously. The kids I know are all on edge because they’ve been cut off from their friends for so long and there’s no end in sight. If they’re starting to act out the best bet is to give them some serious jobs to do or get them out of the house hiking the back country with the family. It’s even better if you can find a way to get them in sight of their friends so they can have a more natural interaction. You’re still technically cutting off screen time, but you’re not explicitly “cutting off screen time”.
