@Baud: That montage was the political version of the Hollywood “here’s the pep talk before us ragged band of misfits goes up against the big evil overlord” scene.
Gotta say I’m impressed with this convention. I had no idea what to expect or how they would keep it energetic without a crowd. I think the shorter segments and cutting from live to taped with music keeps the interest and energy. Except for the iconic speeches like the Obamas and the Clintons with balloons I think I prefer this format. I want to know which Hollywood Dems produced it. Any guesses? Rob Reiner? Ron Howard? Eva Duvernay?
Right, but they’re onto something they can work with here. It’s really pretty smart. “This person you’re so familiar with hasn’t changed – the conditions changed and he’s uniquely suited to them”.
I think people can go along with that “that guy – he would be perfect for this!” That’s something that actually happens.
Isn’t it interesting that Bernie seems more firm with his supporters about needing to back Biden than he was about needing to back Clinton. VERY INTERESTING, ahem.
That is his home. he has an entire wall of firewood, and some flags.
91.
MomSense
Ok I have to note that even though we cynical lefties often mock the idea of personal relationships being effective political tools – it worked in Bernie. The Bidens were just about the only ones who have been friends with the Sanders all these years. It made a difference.
Be fun to count the transcript for “Trump.” For the most part, that name is not there.
97.
lamh36
See alot of nitpicking by the usual punditry about the format.
I think it’s because they can’t control the narrative. They can’t have cameramen looking for folks in the crowd frowning or folding their arms, are looking perturbed. They can’t have closeup of stupid protests or whistles or posters or whatever. They can’t control the visual narrative and they are NOT happy about it.
@dmsilev: Yeah, but that’s bullshit. She wasn’t running for prom queen. He shouldn’t have needed her to be his buddy in order to see that she deserved his support.
115.
dmsilev
@Omnes Omnibus: Most of his supporters have already come along. A fair number of the ones who haven’t are flat-out unreachable; some of them have basically turned on Bernie and called him a sellout etc. It’s that narrow segment in between that this speech is aimed at.
if you have a good way to watch or listen to the convention that’s not in the list at the top – just above Recent Comments – please add links in the comments. thanks.
And Bernie knows he won’t have another shot in 4 years.
I think that’s key. Bernie has come to terms with the fact that it’s never gonna happen for him.

I thought the music was great and really liked the choice of song at the end, but wasn’t altogether fond of Porter’s cover, and It was a bit flat to just have Stills just standing there.
That’s just quibbling, however, because overall I agree with you that the music was excellent. The whole night was excellent.
When I think back on all the times I watched Joe Biden run for President….and then was asked to be Barack’s VP and accepted I really thought he would retire after that job well done and think he got close enough. But, this time is made for Joe to be that President that holds all the factions of the Democratic Party together and lets my Generation finally step off the stage with the dignity of the Cavalry that did the job they were born to do and then passes the reins to the Next Generation.

If this ends on time, Bernie and Michelle will be short.

Alison Rose
@Kay: I also like the point that he would basically have no learning curve, even when it comes down to where stuff is in the WH.

Baud

@Alison Rose:
Right, but they’re onto something they can work with here. It’s really pretty smart. “This person you’re so familiar with hasn’t changed – the conditions changed and he’s uniquely suited to them”.
I think people can go along with that “that guy – he would be perfect for this!” That’s something that actually happens.
Baud
@Elizabelle:

What’s up with the wall of wood?

Isn’t it interesting that Bernie seems more firm with his supporters about needing to back Biden than he was about needing to back Clinton. VERY INTERESTING, ahem.
Baud
It wasn’t “unthinkable” by some of us.
Kay
@Baud:
That is his home. he has an entire wall of firewood, and some flags.
MomSense
Ok I have to note that even though we cynical lefties often mock the idea of personal relationships being effective political tools – it worked in Bernie. The Bidens were just about the only ones who have been friends with the Sanders all these years. It made a difference.

Just kidding, he’s actually doing good.
Elizabelle
Be fun to count the transcript for “Trump.” For the most part, that name is not there.
Elizabelle
@dmsilev: Laughing.
Baud
Has he said billionaires once?
Alison Rose
Okay, the Nero line was good.
Sister Golden Bear

@Alison Rose: Hmmm. I wonder why that is. ‘Tis a mystery. //

OK, he said “Trump.” Right after Nero. I am good with that.
WaterGirl
@David ? ☘The Establishment☘? Koch: I’ll give it to Bernie, it’s a good speech. It sounds like he means it. Not phoning it in.
Kay
Bernie looks good though- I’m glad. He looks like he slept for 3 months and is fully rested.
dmsilev
@Alison Rose: From most reports, Bernie is on fairly good terms with Biden, and that was …evidently not the case with Hillary.
HumboldtBlue
@Adam L Silverman:
OK, but how much of that was due to the fact that we didn’t have to endure 45 minutes of live TV of clapping, crowd shots, Chuck Todd musings?

dmsilev
@Omnes Omnibus: Most of his supporters have already come along. A fair number of the ones who haven’t are flat-out unreachable; some of them have basically turned on Bernie and called him a sellout etc. It’s that narrow segment in between that this speech is aimed at.

Powerful stuff from beginning to end. And choosing “For What It’s Worth” as the closing number was an interesting choice, bringing to mind all those comparisons with 1968 that boomers have been talking about all year already.
The hippies won in 1974 when Nixon resigned. And then lost, big time, for a generation, when Reagan came in in 1980. I believe the victory will be much more thorough and lasting this time.

@Adam L Silverman:
I am reminded of that photo of Trump looking over Melania’s shoulder to make sure she is voting for him here.
WaterGirl
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: I can’t believe he didn’t catch that immediately.
It was a thing of beauty. Michelle modeling behavior for all of us.

It seems Kasich speech has been doing well with Republicans who call in on the Republican line on CSPAN.

The dead-enders are all yelling that they are voting Republican because Obama divided this country. Assholes.

@Kay:
I just caught the end of the report and have no link, but Yost sent a letter to Trump asking him not to mess with the post office before the election.
I can read DeWine, Husted, and LaRose pretty well, but I cannot read Yost. Do you think he’ll defend the post office and the election at all?

@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka):
They both use grievance to drive their messaging.
Omnes Omnibus
@WaterGirl: I am sure they are.
Also, I really thought the music was great – except for the Porter-Stills thing at the end. It just did not work for me.

I’d buy that shirt. I’m also sorely tempted by a tote bag I saw earlier today that reads, simply:

@Omnes Omnibus: I think they are competitive, too.
I thought the music was great and really liked the choice of song at the end, but wasn’t altogether fond of Porter’s cover, and It was a bit flat to just have Stills just standing there.
That’s just quibbling, however, because overall I agree with you that the music was excellent. The whole night was excellent.
Sister Golden Bear
@Adam L Silverman: Thanks for the correction.

A good day for our side. Nice watching with you guys.
I thought Eva L did a most excellent job – she will be a tough act to follow.
I am really looking forward to the 17 people doing the first “Keynote” hour tomorrow.
Good night, everybody.

@Sister Golden Bear: The wife said she ran across the locked mailboxes at our local post office.

It was alright.
It could’ve been the Macarena again lol

When I think back on all the times I watched Joe Biden run for President….and then was asked to be Barack’s VP and accepted I really thought he would retire after that job well done and think he got close enough. But, this time is made for Joe to be that President that holds all the factions of the Democratic Party together and lets my Generation finally step off the stage with the dignity of the Cavalry that did the job they were born to do and then passes the reins to the Next Generation.

@SiubhanDuinne: I’d buy this. :)
Omnes Omnibus
@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): The Macarena thing makes me think though. Porter and Stills might have worked better live on stage where the two could have interacted and played off one another.

Unless you’re watching on a TV, livestream on the convention website is the best. No extraneous blather, no risk of trump ads.

@Elizabelle: I saw him in Kinky Boots on Broadway in 2014 and he was fabulous

Do sometimes get a hint of impression that if you were forced to choose between clowns and Broadway musicals that you’d gravitate to the former without blinking an eye.

Hkedi [Kang T. Q.]
@Omnes Omnibus: I can understand that. The message of the song was spot-on, but he couldn’t sing that song, it’s got a VERY large range.
Edit: a large range at least. I was thinking of Freddy Mercury who had a range of singing that was completely unfair.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Adam L Silverman: You know who lives in Burbank and hasn’t been seen here recently?
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
@Omnes Omnibus:
Probably. It was really weird seeing the convention in this online format, but of course the right thing to do because of the pandemic. I wonder how Trump’s WH/Rose Garden little convention will go down?
Omnes Omnibus
@NotMax: I would have to put some serious thought into it. I can tolerate the movies that have Leslie Caron and I really liked Hedwig (which managed to see at its last performance at the Jane Street Theater). But the clowns would hopefully kill me quickly.
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
@Jim, Foolish Literalist:
CNN recently settled with Sandmann for $275 million fucking dollars.
Apparanetly, according to Wiki, journalists reviewed hours of video of the 2019 Indigeous People’s March, and found the account of events consistent with the Covington Catholic students’ account. It was the Black Israelites shouting racist slurs, first at the Native American Activists, and later the students

Can’t stand TV babblebots. Been coming here for years rather than watch debates or speaches.
This time I decided to try the DNC livestream. It worked well. Good production values. Good pace. Will use it for the rest of the convention.
Agreed with most comments about speakers. Am I the only one who was impressed with Megan Rapinoe?
Marcopolo
@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): While the suit was filed for $250M folks who I trust (meaning they understand the law & case history for suits filed like this) say they believe it was settled for $50-75K. In other words nuisance money. If you actually have a factual report it was settled for greater than that please provide a link.

Believe it or not, Donnie, the PM of Canada has better things to do than make programming decisions for the CBC. And it happened in 2014, when Stephen Harper was in office
