Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

Eh, that’s media spin. biden’s health is fine and he’s doing a good job.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Why did Dr. Oz lose? well, according to the exit polls, it’s because Fetterman won.

“Squeaker” McCarthy

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

This really is a full service blog.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

Music To Celebrate – Na Na Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye

What’s on your celebration playlists?

If you got just one song to send the dumpster fire on his way, what would it be?

I was going to go with Hit The Road Jack, but then a jackal sent me this one, and I think it’s hard to beat.

Any particular food that got you through?  I started with chocolate chip cookies, baking one at a time when I needed them, and potato chips were my “break glass in case of emergency” food.  Three times!

Open thread.

Oh, and this from one of our jackals (phdesmond) is so good, it deserves to be front paged.

An Inauguration Tune

Trump is gone, and none too soon!
Angry, smug, grotesque buffoon,
stupid-suited Pantaloon,
Queens brat trying to play tycoon,
piccolo posing as bassoon.

No more poison-gas balloon,
orange-caked, pale-eyed raccoon,
whose nightly hissing at the moon
has made this country his spittoon —
on January twentieth, at noon!

—  Peter H. Desmond

Some Politico journalist wrote that we would miss Donald Trump. I replied with a country song called How Can I Miss You If You Won’t Go Away.

My first selection was a good loud Hallelujah Chorus with personally altered lyrics not a smidge as good as ph’s or SD’s, but mostly stuff like “Take Stephen Miller too, and Kkkayleigh, and Jared, Hallelujah, Hallelujah.” Then I had the best two hour nap. Lay’s original potato chips were my most frequent numbing food, but any port in a storm would do. The worst was eating the chips out of a box of Ghirardelli brownie mix, because I HAD TO HAVE CHOCOLATE NOW and not in an hour. That was when he abandoned the Kurds in Syria.

not surprising, but this is the first time I’ve heard it attributed to the campaign, “an aide”, but I’m inclined to believe it

    CBS News @CBSNews
@edokeefe says a Biden campaign aide told him weeks ago a crucial part of their strategy: “They said, ‘It’s very simple. We turned off Twitter. We stayed away from it. We knew that the country was in a different headspace than social media would suggest'”

@BR: I’d like Newsom to appoint a seat filler like Jerry Brown until there can be a primary. Too many good options and I want us as voters to decide.

I agree in principle, and I don’t live in CA so maybe shouldn’t have an opinion, but…

With the jungle primary system, is there a risk that “too many options” means you get twelve Democrats in the primary because none are willing to drop out?  And they get 70% of the vote in total, but the two Republicans split the other 30% and go on to the general election?

Liked this from Josh at TPM

It is also far more than okay to embrace and exult in this moment of victory. It is not just acceptable. There is a moral imperative to do so. As much as policies or particular ideas political movements and coalitions are communities, ones that suffer reverses and victories as communities, either well or poorly. How they do so isn’t just a matter of individual experience. These choices can sustain and grow political power, something political movements are always in the midst of gaining or dissipating. It is important to relish the fruits of the common exertions of a political coalition you are part of. It doesn’t just feel good. It sustains and builds power, the experience and proof that hard work and the seemingly endless exertions can have a real and tangible impact on the world we live in. No one will celebrate your victories for you. You can’t be powerful if you don’t act powerful.

    [Addressing Joy]
    Your spells reunite that which was strictly divided by convention;
all men become brothers where your gentle wing rests.

[Of those who can find no kindred soul on earth]
And he who could never accomplish this, let him steal away weeping from this company.
