Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Let me file that under fuck it.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty. ~Thomas Jefferson

In after Baud. Damn.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

White supremacy is terrorism.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

Fear and negativity are contagious, but so is courage!

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

COVID-19 Coronavirus Update (International) – Tuesday/Wednesday, March 10/11

by Anne Laurie|  March 11, 20207:22 am| 2 Comments

This post is in: COVID-19, Foreign Affairs, Healthcare

Daily #covid19 sitrep from @WHO is up (numbers as of 10am Geneva time):

China:
80924 (+20) cases
3140 (+17) deaths

Outside China:
32778 (+4105) cases
in 109 (+5) countries
872 (+186) deaths

New territories here are: Brunei Darussalam, Mongolia, Cyprus, Guernsey and Panama

— Kai Kupferschmidt (@kakape) March 10, 2020

Again, China *locked down the country* six weeks ago. About 10 percent of the *global* population was in quarantine. They tanked their economy. This wasn't a measure to be taken lightly, it was an (overdue even then) recognition of danger.

— James Palmer (@BeijingPalmer) March 10, 2020

The JHU coronavirus map, a resource used by journalists and govt officials around the world, has changed "Taiwan" to "Taipei and environs."

When contacted by Axios, JHU staff said they had already caught it & would change back to "Taiwan" immediately.https://t.co/3k7zHSIIh7

Italy today:

* Whole country in lockdown
* Hospitals completely overwhelmed
* Doctors forced to decide which patients get treatment based on who is most likely to survive

Italy today. Spain, Germany, America tomorrow.

Cancel everything.

Now.https://t.co/CKeUIaCrSC

This version includes South Korea. They were on the same growth curve til 7 days ago – ahead of Italy. The measures they adopted then (subject to the lead time in measurements) seem effective – still exponential growth, but similar doubling period to Japan now. pic.twitter.com/CKvgABlQXJ

Social distance and community reliance

by David Anderson|  March 11, 20207:00 am| 21 Comments

This post is in: Anderson On Health Insurance, Balloon Juice, COVID-19

Last night, Duke University announced that it is beginning social distancing procedures:

Duke is committed to maintaining our daily operations, completing the semester, and ensuring that all students can fulfill their academic requirements as planned.  We will, however, institute a series of social distancing practices to protect the health and continuity of our community.

First, all on-campus classes will be suspended until further notice, and we will transition to remote instruction ….

Second, all undergraduate, graduate, and professional students who are currently out of town for Spring Break should NOT return to the Duke campus if at all possible….

At this time, we are also suspending all non-essential university-funded travel, both domestic and international.

West Virginia University is taking similar steps.

We are trying to buy externalities to slow the spread and decrease the size of the spike.  For families like mine, where we are all young (enough) with no major health concerns,  the personal risk is low.  Our goal is to make sure that we don’t get infected and then pass COVID19 to individuals who are at higher risk.  We are beginning to lean on our social system to give our medical system a chance next week and the week after that and the week after that.

So what should we be doing?

  • Wash your hands!
  • Maintain distance
  • Stay home as much as possible
  • Check in on your neighbors and help out if/as possible
  • Lean in to help the folks who are going to be in the wards soon
  • Wash your hands

Checking in on friends, family and neighbors will be critical.  This is especially true for our community members who may not have the same abundance of resources or luck in their health profiles.  If someone needs a medicine pick-up but they are working, lean into that.  If someone needs a lawn mowed but their regular guy is not around, mow the lawn.  Lean in.  We need to lean into our social networks, even as physical distances increase.

Balloon Juice is as much a community as any neighborhood.  Let’s make sure that we’re checking in on each other, and offering whatever support we can when and where we can.

COVID-19 Coronavirus Update (Domestic Politics) – Tuesday/Wednesday, March 10/11

This post is in: COVID-19, Healthcare, Republican Venality, Trumpery, World's Best Healthcare (If You Can Afford It)

Republicans: it is in your political interest to increase awareness about coronavirus so that old people stay alive to vote for you in November.

— James Palmer (@BeijingPalmer) March 9, 2020

Think I’m gonna split this into three parts tonight — look for separate ‘International’ and ‘Informational’ following posts.

I think in one week maximum we will have realized that the US is in the same situation… https://t.co/LChgXn9J08

— Kai Kupferschmidt (@kakape) March 10, 2020

Four days ago @realDonaldTrump said he “stopped” the #coronavirus & “closed it down.” As of tonight, there are over 1,000 cases in America with at least 31 deaths. The virus has now spread to 37 states.

And we still lack sufficient testing.#FactsMatterhttps://t.co/HE1xjCRj66

— Ted Lieu (@tedlieu) March 11, 2020

He was told that in order to even *get tested,* he has to have not just *all 3* of the above symptoms, but also fit 1 of these risk factors:

1) contact with confirmed case
2) previously been under quarantine
3 recent travel to an affected country
4) history of respiratory issues

— Sulome (@SulomeAnderson) March 11, 2020

And this means that health care professionals are scared to death of anyone with flu-like symptoms, because they have no way to know what they're dealing with.

— Patrick Chovanec (@prchovanec) March 11, 2020

The numbers of "new" cases reported daily in the US are not new. They are newly discovered as we start to test more. Testing is still completely inadequate, and actual case numbers are much larger than the numbers we're hearing because most cases never get tested.

— Marc Lipsitch (@mlipsitch) March 10, 2020

This story is getting retweeted a lot, read it for yourself:

The message from the Trump administration, after a Seattle teen was found to have coronavirus: "Stop testing." https://t.co/iuEdOTQ25u pic.twitter.com/6oMDiHE6NT

I'd like y'all to meet this story, by @amymaxmen, which published 4 days ago &should have gotten a nod in this NYT piece somewhere: https://t.co/IkKTRB8aCg https://t.co/eMS8VJEZTg

On The Road – ?BillinGlendaleCA – Arena

by Alain Chamot (1971-2020)|  March 11, 20205:00 am| 19 Comments

This post is in: On The Road, Photo Blogging

Good morning everyone,

As always, it’s a good Wednesday when we have something special from Bill to share.  Please do look at his site and become a patron.

On a political note, I’ve seen a rumor that Bernie will be suspending today or tomorrow, but we shall see. That would be a momentous development, to put it mildly.

Joe wasn’t my first or second choice, but he’s a decent man and we can use some of that. I know we’re all on team Broken Glass.

It’s the down-ballot race, really state legislatures I’m most concerned with, TBH, and it’s all because of  redistricting based on the 2020 Census data (new legislative boundaries are drawn after initial Census estimates are produced). This literally writes the map for a state for a decade (nasty Republican shenanigans to do additional redistrictings aside, of course) and so getting any and all potential D voters out to vote for all these seemingly less-important candidates is of utmost importance, even if we lose the White House or don’t retake the Senate.  So when talking to prospective voters, please do encourage them to support their state D candidates because it’s so very important that we have fair political boundaries to enscourage responsive, representative politicians.

I drove up to Vasquez Rocks north of the San Fernando Valley in the small town of Agua Dulce. While I’ve driven past them(you can see them from The 14), I’ve never stopped. They’re rocks that have been upthrust to the surface and are quite a sight even from the distant freeway. They’re now a county park that unfortunately closes at sunset(the parking lot closes at 5pm so you even miss the sunset). The rocks were a hideout for Tiburcio Vasquez in the late 1800’s and his name has been associated with the rocks since then. The rocks may look familiar since they’ve been in a number of movies and TV. Probably their most famous appearance is in the first season of Star Trek in 1967 in an episode called Arena, where Capitan Kirk is transported to a planet and battles a lizard creature called the Gorn.  The largest rock is unofficially known as ‘Kirk’s Rock’.

Since the skies up there(as opposed to the basin) were clear and blue, I’ve taken some liberties with the sky in some of the photos and replaced it with something more interesting with Luminar 4’s sky replacement feature.

And here I didn’t think the snowbirds had returned to their summer homes at Traverse City’s world-renowned golf clubs!

97% of precincts counted in Grand Traverse County, home of Sanders endorser Michael Moore’s film festival.

2016: Sanders 65%, Clinton 33%
2020: Biden 48%, Sanders 43%

Joe Biden scores a crucial win in the Michigan primary in a blow to Bernie Sanders. Michigan is the biggest prize in today's voting, with 125 delegates at stake. https://t.co/KWHIhIGlcW
