I’ve never even heard of that amusement park, but you see in the photos that all the workers and visitors have masks on. It seems to have become a social norm here in the OC.
Probably partly why we only had a nice low 79 new cases today. Almost 900,000 people fully vaccinated plus several hundred thousand with 1 of 2 shots done. The county is shutting down two of the big vaccine supersites on April 30 in favor of many smaller neighborhood sites.
I had another section of 70-year cast iron pipe in my main drain crumble. Fortunately the former owner put in a second drain to the sewer so we are able to use my bathroom and have the other redone while they’re tearing up the walls. It’s also 70 years old. We’re taking our first non-essential trip on Saturday to pick out a new vanity and tiles. The cost is horrible but it should all last past my lifetime.

The public vaccination clinics in my city (Haverhill, MA) have been taking walk-ins all week and now they’re just announcing it in advance. They’re still officially limited to people who live or work in the city, though, and I’m wondering if that still makes sense. (I kind of doubt they’re checking very hard.)

From Twitter COVID19 news from Indiana section:
Indiana Department of Health @StateHealthIN
Below is the latest #COVID19 case information for #Indiana:
Total positive cases: 711,787
Total deaths: 12,844
Total tests administered: 9,553,973
Total doses administered: 3,887,012
Total fully vaccinated: 1,653,798
Following added by me:
(Indiana population is 6,732,000. Good progress.)
Death rate 12,844 / 6,732,000 = .0019
Death rate national ratio 600,000 / 300,000,000 = .002
So, death rate close to national average.
I am a life long Blue Dog Democrat (if a blue dog runs under Democratic banner, I vote for it).
I recently posted this on Twitter in the COVID19 in Indiana section, in response to someone who posted how hard it was to get vaccine shot in Indiana:
Absolutely not true. I am a Democrat, but our GOP governor Holcomb has been rational during the pandemic, supported mitigation mandates. The web site for registering for vaccines run by the state is excellent. Both wife and I have both Pfizer shots.
FWIW, Holcombe relaxed the statewide mandate early April, but continued to allow counties, municipalities, and businesses to leave mask mandates in place. We live in county Monroe, where Indiana University is, and mask wearing is still at 99.5% level here everywhere we go to shop for food and meds. We are still only doing take out, though. Sitting in a restaurant is still very high risk because of aerosol spread.
I will finish with a local color story. The local hamburger chain Culvers was opened by John Laskowski, a member of Bob Knight’s team in seventies, and played a couple years with the Chicago Bulls. We finally yearned for some Culvers hamburgers last week, so we did the drive thru. As we waited John brought the burgers out to the car in front of us. As he walked by, I pulled my mask down so he would recognize me and said hi. He knew both me and my wife from our time on staff at IU, so stopped to chat. He is an all around great guy, and the Culvers he opened is the ONLY place in town we will buy take out hamburgers. They are absolutely scrumptious.

Have you seen the story about the mask protestors standing outside elementary school in Beverly Hills, harassing the kids, and telling them they were being brainwashed for wearing masks. I could not believe the school admins did not just call the police and demand they be arrested. The did try to shield the kids from the protestors. My favorite was the kid who stuck his tongue out at the protestors when she tried to convince him wearing a mask was evil.

I am afraid India will not just pass the US in total deaths due to covid-19 but will continue increasing deaths at a high rate well through summer. This is a disaster that I hope the US will, after we start having a large surplus of vaccine, will help to mitigate. We too are at risk if India can’t control the virus so it only makes sense that we should aid them; ditto Brazil. Certainly equipment and secondary supplies to mfg vaccines and supply covid meds would be something we could do sooner.

Modi and his minions were asleep at the wheel, their actions and policies have made this second outbreak much worse than it had to be.
They let the super spreader event of the Kumbh Mela go ahead not only that advertised it and milked it for political mileage.
Soprano2
I saw that Sam Adams commercial too, and I thought it was clever. I’d love to see more companies follow their lead, because the audience that really needs to be targeted will be much more likely to see a commercial like that rather than something from the CDC. As to why they’re better at it than the CDC, it’s because the CDC doesn’t want people to go out and have beers with their friends, and doesn’t want to tell people that being vaccinated makes that possible safely. I wish the CDC would lighten up some, and promote the benefits of being vaccinated better. We have a great vaccination program, but it could be even better. Scolding and acting like we’re going to be wearing face masks forever isn’t going to get those who are more reluctant to change their minds. I’ve been telling everyone I know “Don’t like the face masks? Get vaccinated, it’s how we eventually can quit wearing them!”
I am also tired of hearing about wealthy countries being selfish with the vaccine. Covid was bad in much of the Western world. The United States can absolutely justify vaccinating our population first, because we were so terrible at controlling the spread of Covid! We became some of the worst plague carriers in the world, so we need to control ourselves before we start helping others. I think we should advocate for a temporary lifting of patent protections, and if possible we should give all the Astra Zenica vaccine we have in storage to a country that will use it.
schrodingers_cat
@Soprano2: Yes I agree with your second point. But we can give AZ vaccines to the countries in dire need right now.
Matt McIrvin
@Soprano2: I’ve noticed even liberals having a hard time grasping the importance of collective action here–saying things like “if being vaccinated doesn’t mean I can go out and party IMMEDIATELY, what’s the point?” As if getting vaccinated has nothing to do with overall infection rates in the society.

Thursday in the UK we had 2729 new cases. This is a decrease of 7.4% in the rolling 7-day average. New cases by nation,
England – 2315 (up 372)
Northern Ireland – 120 (up 4)
Scotland – 231 (down 42)
Wales – 63 (down 1).
Deaths – There were 18 deaths within 28 days of a positive test yesterday. This is a decrease of 26.1% in the rolling 7-day average. Deaths by nation, England – 11, Northern Ireland – 3, Scotland – 3 and Wales – 1.
Testing – A total of 1,371,393 tests were conducted on Wednesday,21 April. This is an increase of 15.9% in the rolling 7-day average. The PCR testing capacity estimated by the labs on this date was 653,295.
Hospitalisations – There were 1915 people in hospital on Tuesday, 20 April and 276 people on ventilators on Wednesday, 21st. The rolling 7-day average for hospital admissions was down 19.7% on 18 April.
Vaccinations – As of 21 April, a total of 33,257,651 people had received 1 shot of a vaccine and 11,192,601 had received both. In percentage terms this means that 63.1% of all adults in the UK had received shot 1 and 21.2% had had both.
General – The news about vaccine take-up is excellent. Even the lower figures for care home workers is still quite high. As Robert Sneddon observed yesterday, it helps that all major political parties and all major religious leaders here are very firmly on the vaccine train so there is no-one high profile arguing against it. In other news, hairdressers in Northern ireland are now open for business!

@smith:
Yep, and in all countries, not just the US.
Elite athletes in vigorous sports are no longer elite if they lose 20 percent of their lung capacity.
Parents who are grooming their children for sports/sports scholarships/etc and who dismiss COVID-19 are being stupid/gullible/ignorant and threatening their childrens’ future athletic potentials. And increasing the risk for a need for (remaining) lifelong supplemental oxygen, both for themselves and for their children.
And that’s just lung effects. Other systems are affected, including the central nervous system.
