Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

When you’re in more danger from the IDF than from Russian shelling, that’s really bad.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

This really is a full service blog.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

The revolution will be supervised.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

    I’ll admit I’m getting a kick out of watching right wingers celebrate Redneck CHAZ. They’d probably be thrilled if they fought with some cops, torched a police station.

    (Side note: my first attempt at this comment was written in the Visual tab and it told me there was no comment. I assume this is a known issue…)

    Stricter voting rules enacted by Republican lawmakers last year continue to foil Texans trying to vote by mail in the upcoming primary, with hundreds of completed ballots being initially rejected for not meeting the state’s new identification requirements.
    The bulk of mail-in ballots have yet to arrive at elections offices, but local officials are already reporting that a significant number are coming in without the newly required ID information. As of Wednesday, election officials in Harris County alone had flagged 1,360 mail-in ballots to be sent back to voters — 40% of the mail-in ballots returned up to that point — because they lacked an ID number.

    40%.

    I don’t understand how these truck drivers can afford to tie up their trucks in protests for days or weeks. I mean, these are not corporate trucks and drivers blocking traffic, right? Are the owner/operators millionaires just driving trucks as a hobby, or has someone hired them to do this? And why the hell aren’t journalists asking that and delving into how they can afford the luxury of protest driving such an expensive to operate vehicle.

    The ID requirements forced a redesign of the carrier envelopes used to return mail-in ballots, allowing them to be sealed in a way that protects a voter’s sensitive information while traveling through the mail. The ID field was placed under the envelope flap. But based on early figures, local election officials this week said they feared voters were missing it altogether.

    Between the registration mess and the returned ballots I think conservatives may finally have succeeded into actually calling the validity of an election into question. Gosh I hope everyone wins or loses by a landslide. 1000 here, a 1000 there, whatever.

    We researched some of the biggest Facebook groups promoting the Canadian trucker protest before they were shut down yesterday, and noticed something was a bit off.
    The only individual admin running some of the most active groups was one woman in Missouri. Or so it seemed

    @BySteveReilly
    The woman’s years-old Facebook account had no real history of political activity until January 2022, when it suddenly posted a fundraiser for Donald Trump.
    Below the post was a comment from the woman’sdaughter:
    “I like how you hacked my moms shit but you won’t answer my dm.”

    The rest is here. The worst part is how everyone will pretend a group of “Canadian truckdrivers” protesting Joe Biden’s SOTU is some kind of spontaneous uprising, because we’re not allowed to use even ordinary common sense and must play out this ridiculous charade no matter how ludicrous and clearly orchestrated it becomes.

    @Kay:

    I agree that this is not at all spontaneous.  Hell, they’re planning their next move openly, through the media, and we’re supposed to pretend it’s all just happening.  But it’s supposed to be slightly more sensible than the Canadian truckers, who are ostensibly protesting because they aren’t allowed across the border without getting vaccinated, coming down to a protest in the USA.

    It finally hit me. Generally speaking, there is no mandate to get vaccinated. It’s get vaccinated or test. I’m sorry, but testing is soooo not a violation of one’s previous bodily fluids. These assholes are being assholes because they like being assholes so they can go on Fox. They can all go straight to Hell.

    I said yesterday that any trucker dumb enough to fuck up LA freeways Sunday had best be ready for a  beat down if not bullets.

    The protests are only ostensibly about vaccination. They’re really a bunch of right wing assholes who are upset they aren’t in control and are acting out. They chose vaccination because they think it sounds better than demanding the government kowtow to their wishes even when they can’t win power legitimately.

    @Roger Moore:

    Yeah, I think the truckers going to D.C. would be American truckers roused by sympathy for their Canadian colleagues. ?

    That Grid story that Kay linked to sums it up pretty well:

    In some ways, the situation in Ottawa has evolved into a proxy battle for the American right, said Jacob Remes, a labor, working-class, migration and disaster historian of the U.S. and Canada at New York University.

    American donors are not interested in the nuances of the Canadian situation, such as what the Canadian citizenry wants [. . .].

    “But for the Americans, it’s totally irrelevant. They don’t care about who the leader of the Conservative Party of Canada is,” he said. “They just like the idea of a bunch of white truckers being in a national capital and fucking shit up.”

    @mrmoshpotato: They were ordering pizza for people in Ottawa. Let’s hope they are doing that for people in Ohio too.

    I am also not sure why they were ordering pizza for the truckers in Ottawa as it looked like the truckers had brought their own pizza ovens and were making their own pizza and treating the whole thing like a picnic.

    I think that if we were not in the middle of a pandemic, this would not have happened because people would have other things to do than 1. Go to Canada. 2. To clog the roads. 3. And bake pizza. 4. In winter.

    @Roger Moore: According to Wikipedia there are 2 million semi trucks in the U.S. Even if 99.5% just go about their business that leaves 10,000 to make trouble. Fortunately, the Canadian truck blockades gave U.S. law enforcement, also trucking companies, and rental companies like Ryder, a heads up.

    We’ll see what authorities do with foreknowledge. State police outfits can be pretty hardnosed when it comes to highway law enforcement. A lot will come down to the Governors in charge. For instance, I think Virginia Govetnor Northam would have done what he could to keep convoys from disrupting the Capital. I’m not so sure about his shabby successor Youngkin.

    I wonder how criminal conspiracy laws can be applied here. Some organizers may have to go to prison to deter this kind of disruption in the future. Civil confiscation of trucks may also be necessary. As a political matter, I don’t think trucker blockades can ever win much popular support, no matter what those oafs at Fox News say.

    @Kay:

    First question would be why the Canadian truck drivers are “making their way to Washington DC for the State of the Union”. That seems a little odd, no?

    Any truck convoys are a potential security risk, especially in urban areas, and doubly especially near seats of government. Any one or more of them could be loaded with tons of ANFO by seditionists or other enemies of the USA.
    Seriously; these convoys are potentially serious security threats in a time where seditious activities are “normal political discourse”. E.g. a few trucks burning with unknown cargo on a few critical bridges could do serious months-to-years long economic damage.

    I think that’s part of why they resent black folks so much. They WANT to be oppressed, without the oppression. They wish they got to be the protagonists of history, with a super cool origin story. It never occurs to them that literally all they have to do is NOT show up for Team Dixie Swastika’s big game at the Edmund Pettus bridge.
