I personally doubt the ‘blockade’ will come to much, because if the ticket holders don’t call in a military drone strike, the corporations paying for those big-dollar ads will…

I’ll admit I’m getting a kick out of watching right wingers celebrate Redneck CHAZ. They’d probably be thrilled if they fought with some cops, torched a police station.
(Side note: my first attempt at this comment was written in the Visual tab and it told me there was no comment. I assume this is a known issue…)
debbie
I heard a trucker claim on the BBC that he was willing to die to fight vaccination. I say call his bluff.
Jeffro
How could anyone pay that much money to watch the Rams and Bengals?
My Super Bowl is watching cult member Mace vs cult member Arrington down in SC. Did y’all see that video from Mace outside of trumpov Tower, trying to win back “daddy”s love? WOW
Total John Cusack-holding-a-boom-box moment.
Even the Post is getting in on it ?
Gin & Tonic
I don’t get why this “blockade” threat is an issue. Arrest the drivers, impound the trucks.
dmsilev
Given typical Los Angeles traffic, would anybody even notice the difference?
Jeffro
@Gin & Tonic: AND…AND…be sure to interrogate the drivers as to who paid them/encouraged them to do this.
Follow that money trail quickly, loudly, and publicly.
Jeffro
@Jeffro: PS link to Post article
VeniceRiley
@debbie: I saw that crying snowflake. My bet is, like republican officials that get portrayed in interviews as diner denizens, that guy was inner circle organizer.
zhena gogolia
@Gin & Tonic: Yeah, I don’t get it either. To the point that I can’t even read any accounts of it. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?
Baud
Maybe someone needs to buy BLM and antifa some semis.
@Gin & Tonic:
Agreed.

Who would have guessed that C. W. McCall is turning out to be the Nostradamus of truck-related protest movements? He predicted this almost 50 years ago, but we didn’t listen:

Sounds like time for a blizzard on the Grapevine. Too bad it’s been more than a month since it so much as rained.

DeSantis has passed laws in Florida making such blocking traffic protests felonies. I mean, theoretically. If laws in Florida applied to white people.

Maybe these shitstains should be warned that people will leave the stadium to beat to fuck out of their Dump-humping, Super-Bowl-disrupting, fat, orange, fascist, shitstain asses.
I don’t really care about the Superb Owl, but I’d tune in for a beatdown of Dump-humping fascist shitstains.

Don’t they usually fly jets or bombers to during the super bowl ceremonies? How difficult would it be to divert a couple?
mrmoshpotato
^^^ Terrorist organization, but we all know that.
White & Gold Purgatorian
I don’t understand how these truck drivers can afford to tie up their trucks in protests for days or weeks. I mean, these are not corporate trucks and drivers blocking traffic, right? Are the owner/operators millionaires just driving trucks as a hobby, or has someone hired them to do this? And why the hell aren’t journalists asking that and delving into how they can afford the luxury of protest driving such an expensive to operate vehicle.
Patricia Kayden
Baud
@White & Gold Purgatorian:
Probably sold NFTs of their trucks to fascists with money to burn.
Jeffro
@Baud: it does drive me nuts sometimes – we took Fro Jr on his first skiing/snowboarding trip around age 5 or six, and a decade later he is just ridiculous
me, starting around age 40? Not so much ?

Between the registration mess and the returned ballots I think conservatives may finally have succeeded into actually calling the validity of an election into question. Gosh I hope everyone wins or loses by a landslide. 1000 here, a 1000 there, whatever.
Baud
@Jeffro:
I know! I wish I had grown up where there was hills and snow. Being good at it looks like a lot of fun.

@Kay:
I hope it’s affecting GOP voters too. Given this Supreme Court, it’s the most one can hope for.

Funny how oil pipeline protesters get sprayed with fire hoses in sub-zero weather, while nobody does anything about these dudebros. It’s almost as though the cops agree with them.
Kay
@White & Gold Purgatorian:
I think we’ll probably learn a lot about this completely spontaneous “Canadian trucker blockade”
First question would be why the Canadian truck drivers are “making their way to Washington DC for the State of the Union”. That seems a little odd, no?
Baud
@Kay:
I hope the Canadian government is able to follow the money.
Kay
@Baud:
It will. Have to be over 65 or disabled for absentee. Well, now you have to be over 65 or disabled and spend weeks monitoring both your registration and ballot. 60% chance you succeed in voting! That’s unless you got knocked out in the registration round of this voting contest. Then it’s 0%.
Major Major Major Major
@trollhattan: that’s what they’re doing in Quebec.
Kay
@Baud:
It is truly amazing how much money the Right wing has. Just money to burn. It makes some sense though- the tax cuts alone are worth billions and billions every year they are in place. Probably a good investment.
Ruckus
@White & Gold Purgatorian:
That’s the $240,000 question. (Used to be $24,000? but inflation doncha know)
White & Gold Purgatorian
@Kay: Odd, for sure. Also how the unvaxxed antivax truckers protesting not being allowed to cross the border because, unvaxxed, can cross that border so readily in pursuit of their protest. It’s like they are special or something.
Patricia Kayden
@mrmoshpotato: Keep in mind that some red states have passed laws to severely infringe on the rights of anti-police protesters including giving drivers the right to run down peaceful protesters.
Ruckus
@Kay:
When the entirety of a parties concepts and “ideals” is to make the most money possible for the least amount of any fucking effort whatsoever, from whomever, no matter the negative effects for anyone else, there will be some money to burn.
Dan B
@White & Gold Purgatorian: Word is that American billionaires are financing the truckers. I haven’t seen any ultra reliable reporting yet.
Related is the Ottowa 911 is being flooded with bogus calls traced for the most part from America.
HT JoeMyGod
Shalimar
@trollhattan: Always, and absolutely no drivers still do the inspection properly every time they head out. It’s mostly something you learn for the driving test and forget the details of.
Kay
The rest is here. The worst part is how everyone will pretend a group of “Canadian truckdrivers” protesting Joe Biden’s SOTU is some kind of spontaneous uprising, because we’re not allowed to use even ordinary common sense and must play out this ridiculous charade no matter how ludicrous and clearly orchestrated it becomes.
Roger Moore
@Kay:
I think you’re misreading that. I think the idea was that truckers here in the US would disrupt the Super Bowl, then head to DC to disrupt things around the SOTU.
Kay
@Dan B:
American billionaires have a lot to lose if those tax cuts get undone. Huge amounts. Well worth shutting down a bridge for. Motivated!
Roger Moore
@Ruckus:
I thought it was a $64,000 question. The idea was that it started at $1,000, then doubled with each question until the final question was 64x as much.

@Dan B:
We have an extradition treaty with Canada, no? That’s one way to get out of our court system.

@Kay: They’re about as likely to be “Canadian truckdrivers” as I am to be a Martian UFO jockey.

Dan B
@Baud: That’s my hope and that our law enforcement pursues these two bit anarchists with vigor.
Kay
@Roger Moore:
I think it’s about as spontaneous as the uprising against school boards.
I just tire of how we all have to pretend the Right isn’t funding this. It came out they were funding and managing those school board attacks and STILL we all were told to pretend it was organic. It’s crazy making. They are demanding we pretend not to know things we know. It won’t matter- some hardworking earnest researcher will follow the dots and show the thing and still all we’ll hear is about how we must listen to the anti-vaxx protestors. I don’t want to play this game anymore. They can all pretend to believe this bullshit. I’m not.

@Baud:
Bazookas would be cheaper. Fascist fucknuts go boom.

So this pretty easy to figure out. Its Capitol Siege 2.0. Prep w Ottowa – distract with noise about stupid bowels :-) – shut down DC in March
so fix it with
Call out Guard – shutdown traffic to DC – Block interstate access into MD, VA and PA to truck traffic w/o permit – heck review the truckers permits, licenses and inspect the vehicles – happens everyday

I don’t think shutting down the superbowl is the win they think it is.

CROAKER
@debbie:States must be connected to the Commercial Driver’s License Information System (CDLIS) and the National Driver Register (NDR) in order to exchange information about CDL driver.
I see this as a non starter here. Sure they are gonna try but if my income was based on long haul. No way I am risking my permits to cross country carry.
The independent operators, local yokels, nazis who like to rent-a-truck will still try.
mrmoshpotato
@Dan B:
And dumbfucks calling in bomb threats to Ottawa, Ohio police stations!
I look forward to their fucking fascist faces being caved in.
Roger Moore
@Kay:
I agree that this is not at all spontaneous. Hell, they’re planning their next move openly, through the media, and we’re supposed to pretend it’s all just happening. But it’s supposed to be slightly more sensible than the Canadian truckers, who are ostensibly protesting because they aren’t allowed across the border without getting vaccinated, coming down to a protest in the USA.
The Dangerman
It finally hit me. Generally speaking, there is no mandate to get vaccinated. It’s get vaccinated or test. I’m sorry, but testing is soooo not a violation of one’s previous bodily fluids. These assholes are being assholes because they like being assholes so they can go on Fox. They can all go straight to Hell.
I said yesterday that any trucker dumb enough to fuck up LA freeways Sunday had best be ready for a beat down if not bullets.
Dan B
@mrmoshpotato: I have never before been interested in Ottawa, Ohio
50 miles SW of Kay I believe.
mrmoshpotato
@Tim C.:
It’s the dragged out of their trucks and beaten in their fucking fascist faces that they don’t think it’ll be.
Roger Moore
@debbie:
Check for outstanding warrants while you’re at it.
Roger Moore
@Tim C.:
You’re saying that stopping a massive show of American jingoism that is happily watched by a large fraction of the country won’t win friends and influence people? Hoocoodanode!
mrmoshpotato
@Dan B: I never knew about it before. Don’t even know where it is on the map.
debbie
@Roger Moore:
Then watch them drop their Confederate flags and run for their freedoms! ?
Roger Moore
@The Dangerman:
The protests are only ostensibly about vaccination. They’re really a bunch of right wing assholes who are upset they aren’t in control and are acting out. They chose vaccination because they think it sounds better than demanding the government kowtow to their wishes even when they can’t win power legitimately.
Steeplejack
@Roger Moore:
Yeah, I think the truckers going to D.C. would be American truckers roused by sympathy for their Canadian colleagues. ?
That Grid story that Kay linked to sums it up pretty well:

@Kay:
And it’s cumulative: Per RAND research, from 1975 through 2020, the top 1% has redistributed $50 trillion in wealth upward from the bottom 90% of Americans. Detailed story here.
Starfish
@mrmoshpotato: They were ordering pizza for people in Ottawa. Let’s hope they are doing that for people in Ohio too.
I am also not sure why they were ordering pizza for the truckers in Ottawa as it looked like the truckers had brought their own pizza ovens and were making their own pizza and treating the whole thing like a picnic.
I think that if we were not in the middle of a pandemic, this would not have happened because people would have other things to do than 1. Go to Canada. 2. To clog the roads. 3. And bake pizza. 4. In winter.
Baud
@Starfish:
I was thinking of the original. Thanks for that.
Geminid
@Roger Moore: According to Wikipedia there are 2 million semi trucks in the U.S. Even if 99.5% just go about their business that leaves 10,000 to make trouble. Fortunately, the Canadian truck blockades gave U.S. law enforcement, also trucking companies, and rental companies like Ryder, a heads up.
We’ll see what authorities do with foreknowledge. State police outfits can be pretty hardnosed when it comes to highway law enforcement. A lot will come down to the Governors in charge. For instance, I think Virginia Govetnor Northam would have done what he could to keep convoys from disrupting the Capital. I’m not so sure about his shabby successor Youngkin.
I wonder how criminal conspiracy laws can be applied here. Some organizers may have to go to prison to deter this kind of disruption in the future. Civil confiscation of trucks may also be necessary. As a political matter, I don’t think trucker blockades can ever win much popular support, no matter what those oafs at Fox News say.
Starfish
@Baud: I have been in the children’s literature for Black History Month. That is why the other one came to me first.
Starboard Tack
@Baud: A couple of A10s would work a treat.
Kay
@Steeplejack:
They would shut down the whole country if it meant keeping those tax cuts. The entire political battle since Biden was elected could be summed up in three words “Trump tax cuts”.
Anything that includes retaining them is not what this battle is about. I knew it when they passed. That’s the hill they’re willing to die on.
Dan B
@Another Scott: Great article! An organized and disciplined group that wants violence. It sounds like an Eric Prince to take down left wing governments. A coup.
Roger Moore
@Geminid:
Before the truckers decide to try jamming up the streets of LA, they should perhaps recall the story of Reginald Denny.
Roger Moore
@Starboard Tack:
I would suggest that blowing up the trucks blocking traffic will not help to unblock things; it will make them worse. The right solution is to arrest the people who illegally block traffic and impound their vehicles.
WaterGirl
@Starfish: That’s appalling. It really is a cult and they are willing to sacrifice their kids. Horrifying. Even worse, the kids are probably excited to be a part of this “great” thing.
:: shudder ::
Bill Arnold
@Kay:
Any truck convoys are a potential security risk, especially in urban areas, and doubly especially near seats of government. Any one or more of them could be loaded with tons of ANFO by seditionists or other enemies of the USA.
Seriously; these convoys are potentially serious security threats in a time where seditious activities are “normal political discourse”. E.g. a few trucks burning with unknown cargo on a few critical bridges could do serious months-to-years long economic damage.
Steve in the ATL
@mrmoshpotato: I play a drinking game in which I have a drink every time you post without using the word “shitstain.” Normally I don’t get to drink at all but I may catch a buzz tonight!

@RepubAnon:
Didn’t some Mounties outright say as much?
Jay would prolly be a good source for this. I seem to recall they are Canadian.
@Kay: I believe it is a copycat mov’t here, not the same truckers. Like how every country gets its own Qanon branch, now we get this.
Also, this whole thing is turfed. My old man drives a truck. No effing way he’d let his rig sit idle for seven days. He’d be on his ass paywise. Or fired for explaining some things to the folks who tripled his workload by sitting on their asses (and leaving their work orders for him to clear). Someone is picking up the tab on this. Would explain all the gofundme solicitation.

@laura: Hey, they want the glorious martyrdom halo of being oppressed. Let ’em have it – provided they earn it honest.
I think that’s part of why they resent black folks so much. They WANT to be oppressed, without the oppression. They wish they got to be the protagonists of history, with a super cool origin story. It never occurs to them that literally all they have to do is NOT show up for Team Dixie Swastika’s big game at the Edmund Pettus bridge.
