Update: NYT says Rushdie still in surgery as of 5pm eastern time.

This really is a great day, to cap off a great week. Good news for Ds, horrible news for Rs. What’s not to love?
SiubhanDuinne
@Dorothy A. Winsor:
I expect they’re stitching together a lot of severed blood vessels and muscles and maybe repairing some bones. Painstaking and time-consuming work. I hope he has highly skilled people working on him. He and the surgical team are all in my thoughts.

Anyone tired of winning yet?

@mali muso: August has been quite a month!

@mali muso: Indeed. Biggest climate bill in history – and it’s page 3 news because it finally got revealed they caught Trump committing espionage.

Also inflation is cooling off and the stock markets are up.
We may not get that recession that our MSM has been rooting for.

@mali muso:
It actually goes back to last week with the judgments in the Alex Jones defamation case. And then something huge every day this week since Sunday. I don’t think I could do this all the time, but after all the awfulness and tsunamis of negative coverage, I am thoroughly enjoying this feeling!
Who says nothing ever happens in August?!
Geoduck
Along with Rushdie’s attack, the actress Anne Heche died this week following a one-vehicle accident in which she crashed into someone’s house and her car caught fire. She was in a coma, and was taken off life-support following organ donation procedures. The poor woman suffered from mental health issues her whole life, and it’s likely they caught up with her.

Remember when August was the quiet month where nothing of political interest happened? lol. Two more weeks until my birthday – I’m holding out hope for a perp walk of the orange menace as my present. A girl can dream…
@SiubhanDuinne: After some 4 years of non-stop bad headlines and daily revelations, I am unused to all this WINNING!

So you birthday is 1/7. So Biden’s win was certified in the wee morning hours on my birthday in 2021.

The country’s outlook was so awful for so long, I can hardly believe how much things have turned around.

@Suzanne: Bday is two weeks from tomorrow. So I may be a little precipitate in my hopes, but still. Given the way this August has been going, why not? :-)
Percysowner
@SiubhanDuinne: Apparently several MSNBC hosts chose this week to take vacation. I’ve seen Joy Reid, Chris Hayes and Rachel Maddow having substitute hosts on various days this week. They deserve their vacations, but boy did they just happen to pick the wrong week.
Lawrence O’Donnell has been there every night, as far as I saw.
SiubhanDuinne
I hope Biden strides right up to the mic, like a BOSS, and says it himself!

So is everybody on board for a new August holiday? I’m thinking “Big Fuckin’ Deal Day” might be the come-together moment America has been yearning for. Just pick one day to celebrate all this winning (no, I mean real winning, not that clown’s ‘so much winning’) and roll everything together like they did with Presidents’ Day.
SiubhanDuinne
@Percysowner:
No kidding, eh?
SiubhanDuinne
@Cameron:
I’d be happy to donate my birthday to the cause!
Cameron
@SiubhanDuinne: Well, that’s generous! Let me wish you a Big F….uh, Happy Birthday!

Who said trump doesn’t have a sense of humor
The pitch for money to his Save America PAC came just hours after The Washington Post and New York Times reported that the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago, the Palm Beach, Florida mansion turned private social club where Mr Trump maintains his primary residence, was brought on by his alleged retention of documents pertaining to some of America’s most closely guarded nuclear secrets.
WaterGirl
@CaseyL: I’m sure we have more heat waves of awful coming in the next 3 months, but it sure is nice to get some big wins and get the wind back in our sails for the fights ahead.
Constantly being bombarded with awful is so draining, we can use this time to recuperate.

@SiubhanDuinne: You idea is acceptable! Even more than acceptable!

In other news, Jeffrey Toobin has left CNN, apparently for the chance to expose himself to a new audience.

I have to admit I wasn’t sure BBB was going to pass, but I’m very glad I was wrong. A 15% minimum corporate tax, increased funding for staffing for the IRS to go after high income tax cheats, hundreds of billions for climate change funding, and the Medicare thing for negotating prescription drug prices and insulin, over the next ten years is a huge deal
I never thought Manchin or Sinema were going to come through

Now it’s like there’s a rainbow.

Other than the “a woman’s body just kind of shuts that down,” guy, has there been a worse Senate candidate than Mehmet Oz?
Fetterman is rolling and he ain’t doing it from his basement, has a rally in Erie tonight.

@Geminid:
The best part of that is that Schumer and Manchin teamed up to troll McConnell on Chips.

@Suzanne: My birthday is 11/8. It fell on election day 2016. That was not a happy day.
It falls on election day again this year. I have hopes for a better birthday present. Better and better hopes.
Cameron
@HumboldtBlue: This would appear to be (and I hope it is) one of the biggest political mismatches this year – you got a teevee celeb who fell off the Oprah truck somewhere running against someone who pretty obviously knows Pennsylvania voters, whether liberal/conservative, rural/urban, or any other combo. I hope Democrats carry everything in the state. And I haven’t lived there since 2016.

@HumboldtBlue: JD Vance?

Like most here, I would have preferred the larger version of this bill proposed earlier. However, the timing of this vote may work better for mid-terms, so that is one more good thing about it.
dmsilev
@Splitting Image: Jack Ryan. Oh, for those innocent days of yore when the phrase “Parisian sex club” could actually sink a Republican’s political run.
Omnes Omnibus
@patrick II: For the next couple of months, this bill is the greatest thing since sliced bread. After November, we can talk about improvements.
SiubhanDuinne
@Splitting Image:
Are you talking about the late Sen. John Warner of VA? He was a Republican, true, but I think he was a decent guy and a good candidate.

@Argiope: my work here is done.
Omnes Omnibus
@Steve in the ATL: Thank god. How can we miss you if you won’t go away?
Bupalos
@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): And I just gotta mention every time:
The billions for climate change is also billions in savings for consumers, billions to independent contractors in trades, billions for homeowners and renters. We’re all used to rooting for this stuff politically because it’s the right thing to do and we want to save the world… but in this case I also just hope people really look into the down and dirty of what is specifically in it for them, and for their neighbors, and talk that up! Because regular folks including probably just about everyone here have a lot to gain directly from provisions of this bill. It’s money coming out of some of the wealthiest companies in the country and going to some of the folks who need it most and can use it best. In the form of long term investments that can pay off for a decade and beyond. It’s absolutely traditional Dem wheelhouse stuff and we should be very proud we got this little miracle over the line.
Steve in the ATL
@Omnes Omnibus: [sobbing quietly into my Solo cup of Franzia]
Bupalos
@patrick II: For the midterms it would have been great if it could have happened sooner, because the actual provisions (that people are going to freak out in a good way when they see hit) really don’t start until 2023.
But that’s why we need to talk this thing up in very particular terms, so people know what this is and what they’re about to get thanks to big D.
Cameron
@Omnes Omnibus: Absolutely. If you have a good reality, don’t slag it in favor of a more attractive fantasy. It’s the gateway to that attractive fantasy.

@SiubhanDuinne: No, this is Jack Ryan of IL. It’s the story that’s sometimes referred to is “how Star Trek made Obama President.”
One note is that the documents that were unsealed that led to Jack Ryan leaving the race were not intended to be released by either he or Jeri, to protect their kids. I’m led to understand,in fact (although don’t know for certain) she finds this all…uncomfortable, and not a point of pride.
patrick II
@MisterDancer:
That particular election also led to John Roberts observation of the 27% Crazification factor .
patrick II
