Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Too little, too late, ftfnyt. fuck all the way off.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

So fucking stupid, and still doing a tremendous amount of damage.

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

If a good thing happens for a bad reason, it’s still a good thing.

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

“woke” is the new caravan.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

A fool as well as an oath-breaker.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

There is no compromise when it comes to body autonomy. You either have it or you do not.

There are times when telling just part of the truth is effectively a lie.

Every year, our international followers use this video as an opportunity to dunk on Americans. This is the way of things.

In the spirit of togetherness, this year we ask – what extreme cooking technique would a CPSC-like agency warn about in your country?

Anwar was sworn in at 5pm Malaysian time, three hours ago. Only yesterday he was trolling the media gathered outside his office. They crowded around his car as he was leaving to ask if there was any news. “Here’s some popcorn,” he replied, handing a bag out the car window. “Go catch a movie.”

ETA: I think he was caught a bit by surprise this morning, when Barisan Nasional abruptly changed its mind and agreed tojoining an alliance with Pakatan Harapan.

When Jayme Erickson arrived at the scene of the crash on an icy stretch of Alberta highway on 15 November, she found a teenage girl with severe injuries that Erickson knew were probably fatal. Owing to the severity of the girl’s injuries, Erickson could not recognise her.

Erickson worked for nearly half an hour to remove the girl from the vehicle and stayed with her until the teenager could be airlifted to a nearby hospital in Calgary.

When Erickson got home at the end of her shift, she was met by police officers who said her 17-year-old daughter, Montana, had been the victim of the crash. She was advised that the injuries were “not compatible with life” and Montana was taken off life support.

“The critically injured patient I had just attended to was my own flesh and blood. My only child. My mini me. My daughter, Montana,” she wrote to family and friends. “Although I am thankful for the 17 years I had with her, I am shattered and left wondering. What would you have become, my baby girl? Who would you have been?

“I am shattered. I am broken. I am missing a piece of me. I am left to pick up the pieces and expected to carry on.”
    …………………
Erickson said she wanted the world to know about the daughter she had lost. “She would love fiercely if you were her friend. She would love you to the end of the world and back and she would do anything for you. She was a fighter. And she fought,” she said.

    Words fail me.

    Today in animal news:

X-ray discovers cat trapped inside checked bag at New York’s JFK airport

It is assumed the furtive feline climbed into the baggage without being noticed as the passenger packed, before being unwittingly zipped inside, taken to the aircraft and checked in. As soon as the X-ray machine saw the cat, the luggage was opened. The cat was rescued safe and sound.

Something tells me the cat was none too grateful. Probably said something along the lines of, “About damn time!”

Alaska firefighters rescue baby moose trapped in home

“It looks like the moose had been trying to eat some vegetation by the window well of a basement window and fell into it, and then fell into the basement through the glass,” Thompson said.

A biologist from the Alaska department of fish and game was able to tranquilize the moose but the animal was not completely unconscious. “He was still looking around and sitting there, he just wasn’t running around,” Thompson said.

Once sedated, the next problem was getting the moose – which weighed at least 500lb – out of the house. Improvising, responders grabbed a big transport tarp typically used as a stretcher for larger human patients. Once the moose was in position, it took six men to carry him through the house and outside.
    ………………………..
Once the sedative wore off, the moose apparently had his fill of human companionship and wanted to get back to the wild. “He got up and took off,” Thompson said.

    A 500 lb “baby.”

Since we moved back to Denver, we go over to friends for Thanksgiving.  Normally it’s maybe 8 people, this year they’re hosting 20.  There are some whackadoodles in the bunch we’re sure so Plague exposure would normally be a consideration.

We’re hoping, however, that because their 7-month pregnant daughter (first grandchild) will be there, that everybody attending will have taken that into consideration and either not come or be vaccinated or something.

Our next door neighbor is battling cancer again, he’s in his early 70s and in a lot of pain, confined to home.  One of his daughters came up from Mexico, she’s unvaccinated, to stay with him.  Took him flowers and arranged for a Thanksgiving meal to be delivered to him and his daughter but he’s in a tough spot emotionally dealing with this.

It’s the time of year when millions of turkeys across the US might justifiably fear for their safety, but in one Massachusetts town the birds have turned the tables, ganging up to “terrorize” residents with pecks, kicks and loud clucking.

People in Woburn, north-west of Boston, have been subjected to a barrage of attacks and intimidation by a group of five wild turkeys, with the situation forcing some to take up improvised weapons and residents reporting being trapped in their homes.

The turkeys, led by a male bird nicknamed Kevin, arrived two years ago. Initially the birds were docile, but as time passed they have become ever more pugnacious, leaving Woburners fearful for their safetyand forced to adapt their behavior.

“They don’t let you out of your house,” said Meaghan Tolson, who lives in Woburn and has named the turkeys.

“They peck at cars, they stop traffic. They go after kids on bikes. If you’re walking or jogging, or anything like that, they come for you.”
    …………………..
“Some days it is frustrating. I’ll be like: ‘Oh my God, there’s an Amazon package’ and I can’t go get it, because the turkeys are there. “Then I just have to wait until nightfall. I’ve kind of adjusted over time to it. I know their routine now, so I can kind of work around [them].”

    Ummmm… No. Just no.

MassWildlife even has a guidance page on its website: “talking turkey”.

“Don’t hesitate to scare or threaten a bold, aggressive turkey with loud noises, swatting with a broom or water sprayed from a hose,” MassWildlife says. According to a “living with wild turkeys” factsheet, residents can avoid conflict by not feeding them and keeping bird feeders raised off the ground. It also advises: “Don’t let turkeys intimidate you”.

Thank you for the roasted carrots with honey recipe in yesterday’s thread.  And:  so peeps don’t have to ask, here it is:

Easiest thing on earth, which is why I laugh when my family requests it like it’s something secret.

Trim and peel your carrots (you can cut them in half if you like) and set them out on a large sheet of aluminum foil (I like the non-stick kind).  Rub them with a little olive oil and sprinkle generously with sea salt and a little pepper.  Drizzle generously with honey and then a few pats of butter. Wrap it all up tight in a foil packet.  Roast in oven at 350F at least and hour (or more if a large packet).

It’s a lot of driving, but not by Michigan standards. In Michigan, no amount of driving is too much driving, nor any distance too short to drive. In Michigan, nothing is close enough to walk to, even when it is within eye shot. In Michigan you might drive to the place you already are, in order to pick up the car and go back to where you never left.

Oldest cooked leftovers ever found suggest Neanderthals were foodies

Charred remnants of what appears to be the world’s oldest cooked meal ever found have been unearthed in a cave complex in northern Iraq, prompting speculation that Neanderthals may have been foodies.

“Our findings are the first real indication of complex cooking – and thus of food culture – among Neanderthals,” said Chris Hunt, a professor of cultural paleoecology at Liverpool John Moores University, who coordinated the excavation.

Hunt and his colleagues have even tried to recreate one of the recipes, using seeds gathered from nearby the caves. “It made a sort of pancake-cum-flatbread which was really very palatable – a sort of nutty taste,” Hunt said.

The burned food remnants – the oldest ever found – were recovered from the Shanidar Cave site, a Neanderthal dwelling 500 miles north of Baghdad in the Zagros Mountains. Thought to be about 70,000 years old, they were discovered in one of many ancient hearths in the caves.
    ……………………………..
Hunt said: “Because the Neanderthals had no pots, we presume that they soaked their seeds in a fold of an animal skin.”

However, unlike modern chefs, Neanderthals did not appear to hull their seeds to remove the outer coat – a process that largely eliminates bitter-tasting compounds. This could suggest that they wanted to reduce but not eliminate the pulses’ natural flavours. Assuming they pounded the seeds using local rocks, the final product may also have been somewhat gritty. “Having sampled the re-created recipe, I think we can understand why the Neanderthals had teeth in such a degraded state,” Hunt said.

@Chris T.: My sister’s cat had an intense curiosity about dryers. She was always climbing into it when my mother was loading it. Then the inevitable day came when my mother shut the dryer door not knowing the cat had snuck in. An hour later she pulled out one dead kitty.

It can’t have been a pleasant way to go.

The cats and I will spend the day (and the next week) packing for a move; I’ve finally found a house after a year and a half. It’s farther from the coast than I’d prefer, in lake and ski country, but I’m looking forward to having a place of my own again.

Arbor Day is the only holiday I enjoy now, but I wish y’all a happy Thanksgiving.

I am thankful for  BJ and all of the commentators!   There will be 7 of us around the table this year, and we are going to be 100% vegetarian.  In fact, everything will be vegan apart from butter and cream in one batch of mashed potatoes.   I am making mushroom, chestnut, and pecan Wellington for the main course, it is all assembled and ready to go into the oven.  Another thing I am thankful for:  Pepperidge Farm puff pastry, which is vegan!

We will have 3 pies for 7 people, I wonder if that will be enough…

Vegan puff pastry?  What kind of fat does it use instead of butter?

My son caught what appears to be the flu and is down for the count, so Thanksgiving will be delayed until the weekend. Hoping he’s at least up to eating by then. We’d only planned to have one guest over, so not as big a deal as it might have been. I think I’ll make some blackberry jam today with some pulp I froze this summer.

Today you are the cube of four,

    Meanwhile, … Phys.org:

A team of researchers has cracked a five century-old code which reveals a rumored French plot to kill the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain Charles V.

Charles was one of the most powerful men of the 16th century, presiding over a vast empire that took in much of western Europe and the Americas during a reign of more than 40 years.

It took the team from the Loria research lab in eastern France six months to decipher the letter written in 1547 by the emperor to his ambassador in France.

    […]

In painstaking work backed by computers, Pierrot found “distinct families” of some 120 symbols used by Charles V.

    [ image ]
Red herrings: the emperor used symbols which mean nothing to mislead his adversaries.

“Whole words are encrypted with a single symbol” and the emperor replaced vowels coming after consonants with marks, she said, an inspiration probably coming from Arabic.

In another obstacle, he also used symbols that mean nothing to mislead any adversary trying to decipher the message.

The breakthrough came in June, when Pierrot managed to make out a phrase in the letter, and the team then cracked the code with the help of historian Camille Desenclos.

“It was painstaking and long work but there was really a breakthrough that happened in one day, where all of a sudden we had the right hypothesis,” she said.

Another letter from Jean de Saint-Mauris, where the receiver had doodled a form of transcription code in the margin, also helped.

    […]

    Clever doods.

I’m reminded of “junk DNA” – segments which supposedly “do nothing”. That we know of. So far.

Number one rule in cryptography: Never doodle in the margins!!11

    Cheers,
    Scott.

This will be our first Thanksgiving without our mother (grandmother, great grandmother), who usually presided over the dinner. Everyone wants her particular stuffing. I’m making cranberry sauce and also deviled egg appetizers. There’s been some recent family conflict, but I hope everyone can hold it together for a few hours.

Now you too have something to be thankful for, along with 51+% of Americans who voted for liberal Democracy this month. Interesting fellow according to the BBC explainer I read, overcame a lot of rancid political attacks in his recent past.

Sounds like the King got everyone in his office and told them “You can’t leave until we have a Prime Minister!” — get to work you slackers! Good for him for taking charge and getting it done!!

That last part isn’t in quotes, but I’m sure it is what he was thinking to himself…               ;~)

I had a big day yesterday, starting with an early afternoon appointment with my orthopedic surgeon, who replaced my shoulders back in 2016, along with Wife’s knees. I have bad knees, worse hips, and something going on with my back which he declined to diagnose specifically after that x-ray. Toldme to see my family practice Dr, whom he knows well who may refer me to a neurosurgeon who works on spines and saved Wife last spring.

Also — Got a giant injection of steroids into my worse knee, left, which made me gasp, though not twitch. Seems to have helped some. Very little cartilage in knees and hips, scary x-rays. Also have a appointment next month for surgery to remove an incipient tumor in my bladder. Hurray! Hope to meet with urologist/surgeon to discuss that soon.

Then off to shop for T-day foodstuffs. Went to Steak and Seafood shop, where I bought oysters, scallops and shrimp, thence to Kroger’s which was a madhouse, but thankful, everyone was being on their best behavior, asking please could you tall person reach that thin o the top shelf? Thank you so much, etc, etc. Was somewhat surprised, but really, everyone was totally polite and helpful. Was pitch dark when I got home! I stopped at Family Dollar and bought a $5.89 headlamp to negotiate the path up to the front door.

I have a little utility wagon I use to move provisions up to the house ( and trash beck down), it’s 230′ of uphill, with one sharp switchback 1/3 of the way up. At which point I had to dump the big bag of DF kibble and one sack of groceries, as the cart was too heavy for me to get rolling after the switchback. That stuff is still out there, I hope the dogs didn’t spread it all over the hillside. Going to look after I finish my coffee. Slept til 11 am thanks to modern medicine, after a V long Wednesday. Had nice love session with the two big dogs, which are cuddle bunnies.

No bird this year — just the Wife and I for dinner, which is going to be seafood with deviled eggs and a big mixed greens salad, and a store bought pecan pie, which we have had before, it’s quite tolerable. Should have bought heavy cream to whip, oh well, can use the butter pecan ice-cream instead…

    Happy Holidays, everyone.

Should you have a can of evaporated milk hanging about, can use that to make a substitute topping. Crucial that the bowl and the attachment(s) need to be cold, cold, cold. Works as well without addition of any sugar or flavoring.
