Brazil’s former President Jair Bolsonaro has been admitted to a US hospital with severe abdominal pain a day after his supporters stormed Brasilia https://t.co/ao506ALRkS via @bpolitics @danielcarvalho_ @brandimarte
— Robert Jameson (@rhjameson) January 9, 2023
Bolsonaro might quite plausibly need medical care — he’s had repeated hospitalizations for bowel obstructions since surviving an assassination attempt some years ago, not to mention suffering the aftereffects of multiple coronavirus infections. And no doubt it’s very stressful when your supporters’ attempts to overthrow your legitimately elected successor fail miserably and publicly.

State spox Ned Price says: If someone entered US on an "A" visa, essentially a diplomatic visa, & an A visa holder is no longer engaged in official business, it is incumbent on that visa holder to depart the US or request a change to another immigration status, within 30 days.
— Laura Rozen (@lrozen) January 9, 2023
And that request would be made to the Department of Homeland Security.
It is incumbent on visa holder to make that request to change their status or leave the country.Asked if individual does not do either or those things, (leave or change their visa status), what happens, Price says:
If an individual has no basis to be in US, the individual is subject to removal by [the Department of] Homeland Security.Asked about prospect an A visa holder might have entered US on a different visa, Price said: I would be hard-pressed to think of scenario when sitting head of state would travel on something other than A visa if that person was here on something for official business.

This is surprising, Bolsonaro is usually a pain in the ass
Mike in NC
Surely south Florida can accommodate two would-be dictators. Trump and Bolsonaro ought to come up with a power-sharing plan that both would approve of. Trump can rule during the odd months and Bolsonaro during the even ones. DeSantis, meanwhile, has set his sights on the White House. Imagine him trying to deal with Putin! I say that as somebody who fervently hopes to never set foot in Floriduh ever again.
Lapassionara
isnt there an important football game on tonight?

@Lapassionara: I was thinking we give a shout out to Raven. I hope he is not in the top section that is open to the elements.

@Mike in NC:
Why would you do that to Betty Cracker? :-)
Frankensteinbeck
Wow, the Supreme Court in the US sure doesn’t have the power to send out an arrest warrant. Unlike right wingers in the US, I guess they don’t appreciate being collateral targets.
If Bolsonaro did plan this… I mean, the whole plan hinged on the rioters’ belief that the military would see the uprising and join their side, launching the real coup. You would think Bolsonaro would know whether or not Brazil’s military was interested – which, thankfully, it isn’t.
prostratedragon
@Frankensteinbeck: From what folks around and about have said, one would think someone would have told him before hand not to count on the generals. That last time must have been a doozy to have killed interest for more than a generation now.
Betty Cracker
@Lapassionara: Dawgs vs. Frawgs. It’s not looking good for the Frawgs.
Frankensteinbeck
@prostratedragon:
Maybe… he’s just a complete dumbass like Trump? All I know about the guy is that he’s a raging Cleek’s Law style right wing asshole. It’s hard to credit idiots rising to the top in other countries, but America isn’t unique.

Lapassionara
@Betty Cracker: we’ll, good for Raven’s team then.
geg6
@Frankensteinbeck:
From what I’ve read in various online outlets, that was exactly the plan. They expected the cops and then the military to join them. They never expected to be arrested. Same stupid dipshits as the Trumpists.
Betty Cracker
@Lapassionara: I was hoping for a good game. Poor Frawgs.
philostopher
@geg6:
Stupider, in one particular way – Trump was still sitting in the White House when his minions tried to overrun the US Capitol. Lula da Silva was inaugurated over a week ago, now – at the very least, he occupies their equivalent of the White House, and ostensibly has whatever control of the military and law enforcement Brazilian heads of state have.

Frankensteinbeck
@geg6:
Exactly like the Trumpists. They were shocked, gobsmacked, when the FBI started rounding them up. It’s why I say the light defense of the Capitol was the only reason it happened. The Jan 6th rioters only did it because they were sure they would face no consequences.
prostratedragon

Can we get them to take Bannon away too?
Ken
@Anonymous At Work: Not just the one, Bolsonaro travelled with a bunch of supporters. And he’s gone to the hospital with some yet-to-be-diagnosed ailment. So Fox should be trotting out their boilerplate story about a caravan of diseased South American migrants any minute now, right?
Dan B
@Frankensteinbeck: There are videos of the police letting the rioters into buildings and members of parliament. There’s some other security service on video doing the same.
Enhanced Voting Techniques
I would imagine from a South American POV the coup happening while Bolsonaro is off in the Great Northern Gringo Meddler itself, the United States, would make any self respecting Brazilians’ skin crawl. This whole thing is so blazingly stupid from start to finish that Steve Banon has to be the drunken fool that came up with it.
Enhanced Voting Techniques
@Ken: Banon’s South American Sockpuppet was posting on twitter from his hospital bed and he does look just miserable and he was saying he needs to get back to doctors in Brazil since they know the denials of his condition.

I thought we didn’t have an extradition treaty with Brazil. Or has that changed recently
EDIT: Googled it. Apparently we do but Brazil refuses to extradite Brazilian nationals.
Jay C
@prostratedragon:
according to most reports I’ve read, Bolsonaro had already run an appeal to overturn the election results by the Brazilian military brass shortly after the vote. And they flatly refused to get involved.
Steve Crickmore
The military police were fairly useless as you can see from this video. https://twitter.com/OneAddyAdds/status/1612245785130803200
The Moar You Know
As I mentioned in a previous thread, I’ve had the same surgery as Bolsonaro had, although there is no doubt that his was more severe. My damage was at least done by a surgeon.
Small bowel obstruction kills and he’s had at least five go-rounds since the attempt on his life that have made the media. He doesn’t take care of his diet and he’ll be dead soon enough I expect.
In the meantime rest assured his every waking moment is pain. You can’t take opiates for bowel issues.
If you think I feel sorry for him, well, I do to an extent. Doesn’t change that he’s a complete shit human being, but I know how he feels physically and he cannot be enjoying his life. At all.
Kent
If they didn’t do it then, they won’t do it now. Most Latin American militaries are smart enough to no longer want to get involved in coups and leading civilian government. All that gets them is blame for everything that goes wrong in the country from shitty roads to sporadic electrical service to bad schools. Much better to just grift away behind the scenes and let the civilian leaders take the fall for whatever goes wrong.
mvr
@The Moar You Know: That’s unfortunate. Pain over time is harder to take than just the pain itself, by which I mean it makes it harder to do things that make life fun.
eldorado
@The Moar You Know: …You can’t take opiates for bowel issues.
you aren’t the boss of me
Bruce K in ATH-GR
@eldorado:
No, but apparently if you take opiates when you have bowel issues, your lower GI tract will be the boss of you, and treat you like Elon Musk treats underlings who displease him.

Bolsonaro collapsed and was rushed to the hospital where doctors had to pump a pint of semen out of his stomach.

@GibberJack: Doesn’t matter if this take on an old urban legend is true or not — Make the fascist bastard deny it!
