This blog will pay for itself.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the gop

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

My right to basic bodily autonomy is not on the table. that’s the new deal.

Never give a known liar the benefit of the doubt.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Today in our ongoing national embarrassment…

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Everybody saw this coming.

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

Looks like we could use one!

I got my Covid vaccine today and I feel like I am pulling an all-nighter, even though it’s only 6 pm.  But I have the energy to put this up, at least.

Wide open thread –here’s your chance –  what do you want to talk about ?

I was wondering what Judge Chutkan would say about penalties for Trump if when he violates the gag order.  I guess she listed several punishments.

    My favorites in bold.

Chutkan did not say during the hearing what penalties she would implement should Trump break the rules of the gag order, but listed several options she believed were available for her to choose from.

Those options include admonishing Trump in court, imposing financial penalties, home detention or revoking his pretrial release. Chutkan also said she believed she could issue a show-cause order, which would require Trump justify why he breached the rules of the gag order.

Violations of the gag order may not necessarily need to be raised by prosecutors for Chutkan to impose a penalty, she said.

Trump said on his social media site that he plans to appeal the ruling.

Just back from a four-day writers’ workshop. I don’t think I have Covid (and I’ve had the latest vaccine), but I am feeling cruddy today. I hope it’s just three nights of bad sleep, and that I’ll be fine after another good night of R&R. Need to feel better, meeting with the surgeon tomorrow, and I don’t want to miss that!

    Refusing to live in reality.

Watched “Johnny Guitar” last night, a 1954 western starring Joan Crawford and Sterling Hayden.  O.M.F’ing.G.  it got panned by US critics at the time, but the French auteur crowd loved it (F.Truffaut: “Beauty and the Beast remake, in which Sterling Hayden played Beauty.”), and more recent opinion is swerving around to “psycho-sexual subversion of Western tropes.”  Yup, in spades.  My mind was blown.  Really over the top.  Loved it, my co-watcher hated it.  What do the jackals think?

Justice Department Seeking Stronger Prison Sentences for Proud Boys Members

The Justice Department on Monday filed notice it plans to appeal and seek harsher prison sentences for five members of the Proud Boys who are already incarcerated for their convictions tied to the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol.

In five separate filings, DOJ indicated it would seek intervention from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia to obtain longer sentences for the leaders of the far-right group: Enrique Tarrio, Joseph Biggs, Zachary Rehl, Dominic Pezzola and Ethan Nordean.

More Democrats are announcing for office.  This one today is in Arizona.  We will have many good Democratic candidates to support next year. Link

Former Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez is planning a Democratic challenge to incumbent Republican Rep. Eli Crane in Arizona’s 2nd Congressional District, he announced Monday.

Nez, 48, was born in Tuba City and grew up in Shonto, both on the Navajo Nation.

He was vice president of the Navajo Nation from 2015-19 and became president in 2019 and served one term. He has a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s in public administration from Northern Arizona University.

He also served as a Navajo County supervisor and in other tribal government roles.

@WaterGirl: Did they say what their reasoning is?

No, the reporting so far is only on the initial filing.

    From another source:

While each of the four men convicted of seditious conspiracy received sentences of at least 15 years in prison — Tarrio’s sentence was 22 years — many of the figures fell far below what was originally sought by prosecutors.

The notice of appeal does not include any legal arguments, and instead alerts the court to prosecutors’ plans.

Still, the move falls in line with the way the Justice Department handled other seditious conspiracy cases, including sentences handed down for members of the Oath Keepers, with prosecutors likewise appealing sentences for members of the far-right militia group.

@WaterGirl: Sure Lurkalot’s French Onion Soup recipe (I’ve reduced original quantities by approx. a third):

    ONION SOUP

    1 lb peeled onions
    1 oz butter
    1 bay leaf
    1/4 C. flour
    2 t. paprika
    1/2 t. pepper
    1 qt beef stock/broth
    1/3 C. white wine
    1/2 tsp salt

    Slice onions 1/8” thick.
Melt butter, place onions in it, sauté slowly for 1-1/2 hours in large soup pot.
Add all other ingredients except beef broth and wine. Saute over low heat 10 minutes more.
Add broth and wine, simmer for 2 hours.

I have to acknowledge that I’m not a strict follower of most recipes (soups are often pretty flexible), and that I added thyme, savory, parsley, and garlic. Next time I may omit the flour, as the soup didn’t really need thickening and the flour made some extra work for preventing lumps. Then I put shaved Gruyere in the bowls before dishing up the soup.

Much better than my first-round experience with the Moderna vaccines/booster a couple of years ago. Those kicked me back on my ass for several days. This time around I took Pfizer and seem to handle that a lot better.

It’s probably Epicurean poetry, but the first word is the hard one. Until you get that, you have no proof it can be done at all. Now we know it can, there’s a good chance we can get a whole lot more.

I went to a meeting on Issue 1 in Ohio – it’s the reproductive rights issue that will be up for a vote on 11/7. I have no idea if it will pass in Ohio but we’re trying.

There’s also Issue 2, which is marijuana legalization. The state Democratic Party did not endorse Issue 2. It’s an odd mechanism that the pot people came up with. It’s not a constitutional amendment, it’s an “initiated statute” which means the state legislature can immediately overturn it if it passes. I’m not sure why they went that route.

You’re so welcome for the recipe which has been “in my family” for decades…but supposedly the recipe came from the lunch room at Famous Barr, a department store in St Louis where I had it often as a youngster. Here’s the original amounts for a 5-6 quart batch (it freezes well):

3 lb peeled onions (5 lbs unpeeled)
    4 oz butter
    1 bay leaf
    3/4 C. flour
    2 T paprika
    1-1/2 t. pepper
    3 qt beef stock/broth
    1 C. white wine
    2 tsp salt

I finish it with toasted slices of french bread trimmed to fit the diameter of the bowl, then cover that with grated cheese of choice and place it in the broiler until it melts.

I got 3 shots today — Covid, flu and shingles!  And the shingles shot(s) are free for folks on Medicare; I got on Medicare in September.  Extra $600 a month as I don’t have to pay for my insurance now.

You do have to pay for parts of Medicare (not telling folks here anything new!) but the pittance I get from Social Security covers that.  Fun (well, not fun, exactly) fact – my school pension drops the amount I could draw from Social Security, even though I worked enough years to qualify for full benefit.   My pension is pretty good, so I’m good.

@pat: seems perfectly normal to me. Presidents go where there are crisis. It’s part of the job. Including the citizens being somewhat uneasy. They wait till it’s not too urgent because they don’t want to be a problem but eventually when an ally has a big crisis, the President tends to go.

Press may make a fuss. I am afraid that is normal too, whether there is reason or not, they WILL make a fuss.

Hasn’t anyone here ever eaten a peanut butter and pickle sandwich? My Mom used to make these all the time, and I enjoyed them a lot as a kid. Has to be made with non-garlicky dill pickles sliced for hamburgers. (Also Kinsey Millhone, Sue Grafton’s fictional detective, ate these frequently.)

In Santa Fe, peanut butter and honey on a tortilla was the standard while waiting for the paycheck.

@Yarrow: Intramuscular vaccines are supposed to be in the deltoid muscle (covers the upper arm / shoulder):

Most vaccines should be given via the intramuscular route into the deltoid or the anterolateral aspect of the thigh. This optimises the immunogenicity of the vaccine and minimises adverse reactions at the injection site.

    (see https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1118997/).

When I was a kid I was ridiculously skinny with almost no muscle at all and deltoid shots hurt like crazy. I’m no longer a kid and no longer skinny and have sufficient muscle that they don’t hurt so much….
