Hamas’s terrorist attacks against Israel.
The need for humanitarian assistance in Gaza.
Russia’s ongoing brutal war against Ukraine. We are at a global inflection point that is bigger than party or politics.
Tonight, I’ll address the nation at 8:00 PM ET from the Oval Office.
— President Biden (@POTUS) October 19, 2023
Come on, Joe.
Open thread.
Another Scott
I haven’t seen the speech yet, but did see this:
Gotta be careful out there…
Cheers,
Scott.

Objections to the word “war” for Russia’s actions. The proper term is “invasion”.
JWR
Wow, that was an excellent speech!
Mr. Bemused Senior
We are so lucky to have him.
robmassing
I actually got emotional watching that.
SiubhanDuinne
Excellent address, Mister President!
ChrisSherbak
@robmassing: Gotta admit, I rolled my eyes a couple times (“Arsenal of democracy” and the list of states providing manufacturing) but d-mn Joe. Got me in the feels.
Eunicecycle
Very good speech. Good job comparing the wars in Israel and Ukraine and what’s at stake.
Turgidson
Well done, Mr. President.
For all the handwringing about his age, it has had the side benefit of making him a much, much more economical public speaker, and I like it.
jackmac
Excellent speech. Somber and quietly, but effectively delivered. But, honestly, after this grueling week he’s earned a long and restful weekend at Camp David.
Chetan Murthy
@ChrisSherbak: I am proud (and a little embarrassed for our allies) tha we are once again the Arsenal of Democracy. For their sake, I wish we didn’t have to be; but I’m glad (and again, proud) that we’re there when the moment demands us.
CaseyL
An excellent address. After Bush II and Trump, it’s hard to see the US as “the indispensable country,” but Biden makes me (want to) believe in that again.
UncleEbeneezer
Just saw a homeless guy with a Punisher military hat and a sign saying “FJB” which I assume is a dig at Biden, on a street corner asking people for change. I just looked at him and made sure my Black Lives Matter bracelet was lined up so he could read it easily. He kept walking.
LadySuzy
@ChrisSherbak: The list of states manufacturing weapons… unfortunately, President Biden is very well aware that the best way to convince some republicans to support Ukraine is talking about economic self-interest. Republicans always make decisions based on short-term self interest; they don’t get long-term geopolitical considerations.
Nukular Biskits
Dang. I missed the speech. Must not have been very long.
And, FWIW, I have worked on the USS Carney.
Ohio Mom
@Nukular Biskits: You can still see it, fiddle with the video, the speech starts about 15 minutes in. That’s what I did — I came in late, watched until the end, then found the beginning and watched the first half.
It’s a terrific and very clear speech.

I was in the car listening. He sounded good.
WaterGirl
@Nukular Biskits: Click on the embed here or watch on youtube. It doesn’t have to be LIVE for you to watch it. I just watched it now, after it was already over.
Alison Rose
Glad we have him in charge right now.
Nukular Biskits
@Ohio Mom:
Thanks!
Nukular Biskits
@WaterGirl:
You too!
Stacy
@WaterGirl: I’m in for that last $100 for the Virginia races.

Watching MSNBC. Wondering who is Jen Psaki going to replace, Chris Hayes or Joy Reid? Within the next few months one of them is going to lose their show to Psaki. Probably will be Chris Hayes. They have already given Psaki his spot on Monday night.
WaterGirl
@Stacy: Thank you so much! Just $75 left to match.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
Hayes quit working Mondays a few months ago. I was assuming it was part of a new contract along the lines of Maddow’s, if a lot less lucrative. Word a few years back was the suits considered Hayes a prestige employee cause he won a peabody
Whose ratings are weaker, Alex Wagner or Joy Reid?
WaterGirl
@oldgold: Maybe Hayes likes working 4 nights a week? He has kids, I think.
Percysowner
@oldgold:
Replacing Hayes seems to be the consensus. I like Hayes, so I’d be a little sad. OTOH, he does have his Why Is This Happening Podcast, so he may be around in some capacity.
WaterGirl
New post up after the Ukraine post, if anyone cares.
oldgold
Psaki is a real talent. There is something about her that is compelling. MSNBC is going to give her a prime time show.
tokyokie
I listened to the speech on NPR on my drive home from work. I thought the speech was terrific and put the lie to anybody who contends that Joe Biden is senile. I also tried to imagine what sort of speech tfg would deliver under similar circumstances. All I could come up with was something awful, mean, nasty, and totally missing the point.
Betty
Even Britt Hume on Fox said it was a good speech. Wonders never cease.
Mike in NC
It would have to involve denouncing ongoing Ukrainian “aggression” against innocent Russia just to get a head rub from his master, Putin.

I just really really wish he hadn’t mentioned Madeleine ‘the price of 500,000 dead Iraqi Children was worth it’ Albright.
