A little history: Garmisch and Partenkirchen were 2 separate towns. But in the prep for the 1936 Olympics, Hitler made them combine into 1 town to be a bigger entity for hosting some of the winter sports. The bobsled run was used until 1966. There is a little museum there, which is open… 2 hours per week. We were not there during those 2 hours. The track itself now mostly just looks like a trail, but you can see a bit of the banked turns. Here’s a quick video I made from a foot bridge above it – looking uphill first, then turning downhill following a phantom bobsled as it passes and makes then next turns.
Anyway, these pictures will be about the valley, the forest, and the ski slopes, viewed up close, as that’s where the flowers were.
Here’s a view up the valley as we start the hike. bigger picture

I am SO enjoying this series, and it is making my newly-retired self want to do some hiking trips (as soon as I am recovered from ACL surgery!). Thank you for sharing these.

The first close up of the ferns(?) growing on the tree trunk is lovely.

“Edelweiss, Edelweiss…”
Actually I don’t think any of those flowers are edelweiss. But nature all over the world is beautiful. Infinite diversity in infinite combinations.

I’m in moderation WHY???

@Yutsano: Edelweiss is a near alpine plant that I think needs limestone, alkaline soil so it’s a bit picky about where it will grow; very cool plant, so covered in silvery fuzz; a test piece for alpine garden fans.
We did a Collette’s Mountain Holidays hiking trip to Erewald, very close to Garmisch. The hiking and even a few via ferrata options in this region are wonderful; thanks for the reminders and views!

Thanks for the nice words everyone!

@Yutsano: I haven’t come across edelweiss much. Two years ago, when we were in Switzerland, I think it was when we popped up into Mürren, there was an Edelweiss Hotel, with a pot of them out front, lol.

Roots on forest trails are my bane. Lovely spot for hiking though—so many options. Looking forward to the rest of your series.
