On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.
From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.
JanieM
This is a sampling of photos I took in 2023. Except for #10, they represent Maine in many moods and several seasons. Number 10 was taken when I visited Steve in March.

Baud
You have an eye for composition.

You make Maine look so peaceful. Are you forecast to get a lot of snow from the storm this weekend?
PBK
Baud said it first as usual. I especially admire the Juiced picture. Reminds me of Precisionist artist works.
Hope to see more of your barn pictures at some point as well.

Nicely composed indeed. Several of them (the first shot of Augusta from across the river in particular) caused my dormant model-railroading instincts to stir!

I have been wondering when we would see more JanieM photos. Worth the wait.
OzarkHillbilly
Very nice, thanx JanieM.
RedDirtGirl
Beautiful shots. Thank you!

Anyway
Wow, these are spectacular. Great set, JanieM

Always a treat to see your photography. Thanks for sharing.

Very nice! We were in Maine last summer but I didn’t take any pictures this evocative.
munira
Beautiful. I particularly like the rocks and the water.

It’s a pleasure to see more of your pictures, thank you. As noted already, your sense of composition has really crystallized. These are the kind of pictures I used to try to take but just never seemed to be able to. I don’t know if I have mentioned this before but the lack of human figures appeals to my repressed misanthropy.
I looked through some of your other Flickr shots and realized you must have had a hard time choosing which pictures to include in this post. You take good pictures, thanks again.

Love the shot of the trees and the fog. Very nice!

Happy to see your end-of-year selection. Your eye/interests seem to be changing, which interests me. I hope we’ll see more of your work this year.
JanieM
Thanks you all. It’s fun to share the pics and I’m glad you like them.
@eclare: Last I checked, we were supposed to get “1 to 3” overnight on Saturday and “3 to 5” on Sunday. That’s not nothin’…. Glad I’m not on the snow removal crew. ;-)
@cope: It’s nice to hear you think I’ve made progress. I’ve been working at it! As to people in pictures — I’m more or less with you. I realize that I can take pictures in public places, and that everyone everywhere is taking phone pics these days, so people are used to it. If I lived in a city I might have less hesitation, since I’d be among crowds as a matter of course. As it is, I feel strange taking a picture that includes that one guy launching his boat while I happen to be standing nearby….

Thanks everyone — it’s fun to share to pictures. I’m glad you like them.
@eclare: We’re supposed to get “1 to 3” overnight Sat. and “3 to 5” Sunday. We’ll see — the last storm was heavy and wet and a real pain to clear. Lucky for me, I only know that by hearsay — I’m not on the snow removal crew. :-)
@cope: I’ve been working consciously on composition, among other things, so It’s nice to have it noticed. As for people pics — I’m more or less with you. I know rationally that everyone is taking phone pics in public now, and people don’t think twice about it. Maybe if I lived in a more populated place I’d normalize to being in crowds, but where I live, it just feels a bit weird to take a picture of that one guy launching his boat, especially if he’s identifiable.

JanieM. These are wonderful photos—inspiring me to put more care into composing my typical shoot-from-the-hip fare.

Thanks for sharing these shots of Maine – its natural beauty stands out. Your capture by composition sets the scene there. Especially enjoyed looking at the waterfall upon the rocks, yet all of them are visually appealing.
There’s an interesting contrast between Pic#7 and Pic#8, where the use of some color in second one brings a freshness that’s appealing to my eye. Good contract of the two.
In NoCal, there’s been a good deal of all colors creatively used for houses, shops, office buildings, garages, etc. Not garishly, so it avoids an obvious look-at-me! – rather, it’s subtle and fits with its surrounding environment. Usually….

Lovely! Favorite is the fog in the trees. April, not a trace of leaves, that’s Maine!
JanieM
@way2blue: I had fun back when I shot from the hip (so to speak), and I’m also having fun learning to be more thoughtful about it. Hopefully there’s no endpoint to the adventure, just more things to learn, and more pictures to enjoy.

Coming in way too late, as usual, I’m afraid, but these are amazing pictures. I echo what everyone else has said about the wonderful sense of composition and add that the use and evocation of textures is stunning. Truly beautiful pictures.
