    And since he did such a bang-up job of apologizing* on McAfee’s show yesterday, Rodgers is now permanently off the show.

    ETA:  correction, he’s off the show for the rest of the season.

    McAfee, who has drawn significant scrutiny for allowing the injured New York Jets quarterback to appear on his program and deliver lengthy conspiratorial rants, made the announcement Wednesday on his show.

    “So ‘Aaron Rodgers Tuesday,’ season four, is done,” McAfee told his audience. “There could be a lot of people that are happy with that. Myself included, to be honest with you. The way it ended, it got real loud.”

    *he did not apologize.  Kimmel just “misunderstood” him. Poor Aaron, so misunderstood.

    Otherwise it makes no sense. The furnace should have either turned itself off (thermal limit switches are standard on those things) or at the very least stuff should have started breaking and even melting long before reaching those temperatures.

    @Dorothy A. Winsor:

    There’s apparently a move in Iowa to “crash the caucus.” That is, some Democrats are considering attending. At least when I lived in Iowa, you could change your party registration at the door.

    Apparently, still the rule:

    Q: Who votes in a caucus?
    A: Anyone who will be 18 by Election Day 2020 may attend and participate in a caucus. Participants must be registered with the party of the caucus they are attending. Voter registration forms are available at each caucus location and participants can register the same day that they caucus. Younger Iowans who are not eligible to participate as a registered voter are encouraged to attend to learn about the caucus experience. Young people may also wish to be elected as a junior delegate. Each phase of the Caucus-to-Convention process has special sessions for junior delegates to learn about the process.

    Q: Do voters need to be registered to attend and participate in the caucus? If so, can an individual register at the caucus? Can party affiliation be changed when the voter arrives?
    A: Again, anyone who wishes to participate in a caucus must be a registered voter with the party of the caucus they wish to attend. An eligible individual can register at the caucus and/or change their party affiliation at the caucus by filling out an official voter registration form.

    If Democrats and independents do crash the caucuses, voting for “anyone but Trump” would be what I would do.  Anytime Trump is humiliated or at the very least, knocked down a peg or two, is good in my book.

    @ALurkSupreme: Truly bizarre.

    Around two years ago my oven started overheating, and would shut down.  It was the result of a faulty thermostat (oven was more than 10 years old).  This is a common, not quite standard part, and we were able to replace it.  Basically, the thermostat wasn’t sensing when the temperature reached the desired level, so the oven just kept heating.  The heating element looked like it was set to a high level broiler — until the safety shut off was triggered.

    I would guess it was something like that.  Depending on its age, it should probably have a shut off sensor.

    Roku connects to the internet wirelessly and the wi-fi function of the router got fried when the power came back on after an outage the other day. The latter is a way of putting a serious target on an individual’s back for no other reason than that they disagree with you. It’s become the standard play of both TFG and the GQP, and is often aimed at individuals who, unlike Kimmel, don’t have a national platform available for response or the resources to take an offender to court. @Barbara: The underlying issue for me is that athletes have outsized voice that they can then apply to issues on which they haven’t earned that voice. And there isn’t anything inherently wrong with that except that we have this meritocracy fetish and interpret the size of the microphone you wield as being something you’ve earned – and conflate the thing you are speaking to as being authoritative.

    Now, younger generations don’t generally fall into this trap because they’ve seen popular idiots on social media their whole lives, where for older generations, microphones were gatekept behind this hierarchy of control – you needed to get permission from a whole bunch of people to speak on a topic on a national level and so access and authority usually went hand-in-hand. Cancel culture is a component of this – shutting down people who take their audience as endorsement to say dumb shit, and to say ‘you know – you want to lie, we’re going to knock your microphone back down in size’.

    He will still be working for the Seahawks organization, just not as the coach.

    Did you know that Pete Carroll played football when he was a student at the University of the Pacific in Stockton (when they still had a team)? He also got his Masters there and was a grad assistant.  They love him at Pacific, a famous alumnus.

    On the theme of the post title, Judge Engoron has posted his emails with Trump’s lawyer Chris Kise, regarding whether Trump would be allowed to demagogue present part of the defense’s closing arguments.  Various commenters have noted that it is never good when a judge uses all caps….

    You haven’t seen the Let’s Blow Brandon series on PornHub? I bet Wide-Neck Marge and her fellow aficionados have. It’s stirring stuff, especially the one where he ‘negotiates an extension of pork subsidies’.

    HAHA!  Thank God I work from home – :D

    @Ken: Wow, that is a great read. Those assholes. He was trying to use the death of Melania’s mother as an excuse to put off closing arguments until Jan. 29! His only strategy is to delay everything, every chance he gets.

    Well, Trump and his mother-in-law were very close . . . . in age.

    She was 78.

    @Scout211: I hate that I’m now waking up at 3:00 AM again worrying about Trump, after three years of sleeping through the night. I shouldn’t read the NYT before bed. They and their readers are taking it as a given that Trump’s going to be reelected.

    @JCJ: Those were good times back in West Lafayette. The university president was such a soulless dweeb.  The riot in October 1984 was interesting, too, given that it wasn’t about anything in particular, just drunken Boilermakers.

    I have a deep, deep, deep, dislike of Alabama specifically because of Bear (fucking Joe Paterno calling four straight plays up the gut and Matt Suhey didn’t gain a fucking inch!). Saban became an enemy the moment he put on the crimson as well. Saban may be the greatest ever — and there ain’t no argument about that — I still hate him and want him to fail.

    @zhena gogolia:

    I’ve heard this before, When you have no defense, plead for the mercy of the court. When you have a client who thinks the law doesn’t apply to them, do not let them speak during closing arguments. If that fails, gag your client with a gag that will cause them to bleed if they attempt to speak, like made with course sandpaper. If this fails be sure to be paid ahead of time and apologize to the court when you say your client demands to speak. If your client is anyone from the family trump, always, always collect your fee up front before you or anyone on your side speaks one word, answers one question by the court or speak in public. And then take a remedial law school course in not doing stupid shit.
