    The FTF NY Times story does not mince words.  LOL.  “Crushing defeat.” “fantastical claims of wealth.”

    A New York judge on Friday handed Donald J. Trump a crushing defeat in his civil fraud case, finding the former president liable for conspiring to manipulate his net worth and ordering him to pay a penalty of $355 million that could wipe out his entire stockpile of cash.
    The decision by Justice Arthur F. Engoron caps a chaotic, yearslong case in which New York’s attorney general put Mr. Trump’s fantastical claims of wealth on trial. With no jury, the power was in Justice Engoron’s hands alone, and he came down hard: The judge delivered a sweeping array of punishments that threatens the former president’s business empire as he simultaneously contends with four criminal prosecutions and seeks to regain the White House.
    Not only did Justice Engoron impose a three-year ban preventing Mr. Trump from serving in top roles at any New York company, including his own, but the judge also applied that punishment to the former president’s adult sons for two years and ordered that they pay more than $4 million each. One of the sons, Eric Trump, is the Trump Organization’s de facto chief executive, and the ruling throws into doubt whether any member of the family can run the business in the near term.
    In his unconventional style, Justice Engoron criticized Mr. Trump and the other defendants for refusing to admit errors for years. “Their complete lack of contrition and remorse borders on pathological,” he said.

    He noted that Mr. Trump had not committed violent crimes and that “Donald Trump is not Bernard Madoff.” Still, he wrote, “defendants are incapable of admitting the error of their ways.”

    Mr. Trump will appeal the financial penalty — which could climb to $400 million or more once interest is added — but will have to either come up with the money or secure a bond within 30 days. The ruling will not render him bankrupt, because most of his wealth is tied up in real estate.

    And next month Alvin Bragg (who so many were happy to shit on just last year) is taking Trump to criminal trial.  The fun is just getting started.  Then there’s the DC criminal trial for 1/6 (that should happen before the Election unless SCOTUS decides to throw Trump a life-raft of delay).  And then the Mar-A-Lago Documents case (which will hopefully get a new judge courtesy of the 11th Circuit court of appeals).  And also Fulton County, which should get moving once this Fani Willis witch-hunt gets dismissed…lots of justice coming

    In other news, Matt Gaetz is gonna need a hug.

    This attorney told The Daily Beast on Thursday that the woman, in fact, received payments in connection with multiple sex parties with people in Gaetz’s circle. Her lawyer said that, in response to a subpoena, she testified about her experiences to the U.S. Attorneys investigating Gaetz. And she turned over text messages, photos, and other evidence to the Justice Department as part of its child sex trafficking inquiry into the Florida congressman, the lawyer said.

    The Daily Beast has obtained some of those messages and photos, which match the documents described by ABC News.

    While the lawyer said he has not yet been contacted by House investigators, as ABC reported, the House Ethics Committee is now reviewing this evidence as part of its inquiry into whether Gaetz paid for sex with women and with an underage teen. In fact, the Ethics Committee met Thursday afternoon behind closed doors to discuss the Gaetz case, which also involves allegations of public corruption, solicitation of prostitution, habitual use of hard drugs, bribes or impermissible gifts, campaign finance violations, and exhibiting nude photos of sexual partners on the House floor.

    @patrick II: Trump has asserted that Mar-a-lago is worth 1.1 billion alone, so that should pretty much cover it.

    Ha! Engoron covered that quite nicely. CNN

    Engoron wrote that Trump’s 2002 deed gave away the right to use Mar-a-Lago as a single-family residence, meaning that Trump paid significantly lower property taxes and that it could not be valued as highly as he claimed.

    “Nonetheless, Donald Trump insisted that he believed Mar-a-Lago is worth ‘between a billion and a billion five’ today, which would require not only valuing it as a private residence, which the deed prohibits, but as more than the most expensive private residence listed in the country by approximately 400%,” Engoron wrote.

    In a footnote, Engoron noted of Trump and the deed: “A fact of which he is well aware, having signed the deed himself.”

    “There is no legal gray area surrounding the permanent nature of the deed restrictions,” Engoron later wrote in his ruling. “Accordingly, there can be no mistake that Donald Trump’s valuation of Mar-a-Lago from 2011-2021 was fraudulent.”

Like you say, the Infrastructure bill is having an effect and we are still spending the last of the American Recovery Act money. The IRA is spurring investment and one estimate is that it will generate as much as $3 trillion in private investment.

    The CHIPS+ bill will trigger more private investment. I think the Commerce Department will be awarding that money soon, and then construction will begin on some very large factories.

    BREAKING NEWS: Alina Habba responds to the verdict and defames Letitia James:

    “This verdict is a manifest injustice- plain and simple. It is the culmination of a multi-year, politically fueled witch hunt that was designed to take down Donald Trump,’ before Letitia James ever stepped foot into the Attorney General’s office. Countless hours of testimony proved that there was no wrongdoing, no crime, and no victim.”

    Alina Habba, the human embodiment of pounding the table.

    Let’s make one thing clear: this verdict was just and it was fair.

    FWIW, McConnell may be busy with family stuff.  Elaine Chao’s youngest sister, Angela, aged 50, just died this week in a car that crashed into water in Texas.  Youngest of six sisters, and the CEO of the family’s dry goods ocean shipping firm.

    Trump has gone out of his way, spent money of his own, taken acts of questionable political value, to promote white supremacy.  He has been virulently hateful towards brown people all his life.  He has been consistent and zealous about it in his Presidential actions.  That is an ideology, and one that he feels strongly about.

    He also sees women as sex and nothing else, with the contempt that involves, but I’m not sure how much that counts as an ideology.  It mostly fits into his “What can X do for me?” mindset.

    Knocks this story off the front page:  WaPost:

    The FBI’s former top spy hunter in New York was sentenced in Washington on Friday to 28 months in prison for concealing at least $225,000 in payments he received from a former Albanian intelligence official while working for the bureau.

    Charles McGonigal will have to serve his punishment on top of a 50-month prison term he received separately in New York last year for illegally conspiring with a Russian oligarch who wanted to be removed from a U.S. sanctions list.

    McGonigal, 55, is one of the highest-ranking FBI agents ever convicted of criminal charges, and federal prosecutors on Friday urged U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly to stack the sentences after the 22-year veteran of the bureau admitted to committing the very violations he was sworn to investigate.

    McGonigal was special agent in charge of the counterintelligence division of the FBI’s New York City office from 2016 to his retirement in September 2018.

    Ah yes.  The vaunted NYC FBI field office.

    I think the total amount he’s on the hook for, combining the $355 M in this case and the $83.3 M in the E. Jean Carroll case, when you add a couple years of interest at 9% as NY requires, is somewhat north of half a billion.

    This morning Michael Popok had a detailed rundown on the current financial condition of his PACs and campaign funds, as well as that of the RNC. They were all in pretty desperate straits even before this ruling, such that he might not even have enough to pay his legal bills, much less fund a campaign. Even without Engoron’s prohibition, getting a loan of this size from a bank was never going to happen. So, he either gets bailed out by a foreign dictator, which I’m guessing is legally dicey and hard to hide, or he starts selling off property. He will have a monitor watching if he chooses the latter, so it will be hard to pull off any funny business there. In summary: He’s screwed.

    @phein64:

    At 9% per year, that interest is going to skyrocket if he appeals.  The only reason why he may not is if his holdings are underwater.  I just saw Michael Cohen interviewed, and he said that all of TIFG’s NY properties are mortgaged to the hilt.  It will be interesting to see if he can post bond.

I think his team was hoping to put away the competition early so he could cruise to the Milwaukee convention, but now their guy has to stay out there on the stump.. Sometimes competition can make a candidate stronger, but that is unlikely to be in Trump’s case.

    But I remember something Bitecofer said after the New Hampshire primary, that this race could be different, and that Haley may be able to stay in the race because some Republican donors are through with Trump and want to take him down however possible. Haley may be willing to go with that program.

    @Sister Golden Bear:

    Oh yes, that did not go down well at all. It’s one thing for a silly little person in Sunak’s position to toss around In Defence Of Gender shit-talk most of the time; he’s got a Kulturkampf wing to keep happy and the UK Media love the High School bitchiness of it all.

    But for him to throw in that jibe, just after Britain got to see the faces of the messed up teens who murdered that lovely girl, just after he’d been told her mother was up in the public seats… wow. It was a jarring, screeching of the brakes moment that cast Sunak’s (and the wider Conservative Party’s) utter political ineptitude and base inhumanity into clear relief.

    Any politician with an ounce of talent would have dropped the “doesn’t know what a woman is” line from his prepared script when he heard who was watching. Any speechwriting team worth paying would never have put the line in there in the wake of the Brianna case. The fact he didn’t and they did, it tore open the cosy veils of ‘performance’ that the Media cloak the Westminster circus with and people were genuinely shocked to the core.

    Shorter – Sunak made everyone watching pick a side. Most people found they didn’t want to be on his.

    He did post some good stuff a couple of weeks ago about the Biden economy. I liked this comment:

    This is both the best economic management of any president in my life and the most progressive in terms of creating conditions of high growth where the most rapid and significant wage gains are in the lowest part of the labor distribution.

    It’s basically the center left version of the Reagan revolution: applying a host of progressive ideas to economic policy in a time of crisis and coming out the other side with an economy that is both better and now on a different trajectory in ideological terms.

    I may be judging him too harshly.

But if she is a realist, she can see plenty of prospective candidates with as good or better a chance of winning the 2028 Republican nomination as she has, whether she drops out sooner or later. So Haley might choose her path without regard to future positioning and let the chips fall where they may.

    @Sister Golden Bear:

    It’s events like this that fix national moods. The Hard Right have enough fellow travellers in place throughout the Media that they’ve been able to drive their kulturkampf narrative to the fore without much ‘respectable’ opposition. There’s a ‘debate’ about trans-rights, people have ‘strong opinions’ that simply must be given air-time, there are ‘questions’ to be asked, etc etc. The Opposition certainly haven’t given much pushback. Starmer’s newnewlabour have made it clear that the problems of ‘those people’ are considered to inhabit a space a bit too far out there on the Left for a party looking for votes on the Right.

    The horrific murder of Brianna, and the sick brutality of Sunak’s leaden jibe, seems to have put a stake in that. People have been given a very clear image of what anti-trans rhetoric leads to in the real world and suddenly all that oh so clever edgelord “just asking questions” fuckery looks and sounds like the bullying it always was.

    Here’s hoping it sticks.

    In an earlier comment I mentioned that the RNC appears to have $8 million on hand, with $1 million in debt. Ballotpedia says: $257 million raised and $230 spent so far, so $17 million still in the coffers. Even putting Lara T in charge of the RNC …. this is still a drop in the bucket.

    Given his profligate ways, I wonder if Musk will pony up for Trump, in the interest of “leveling the playing field”, of course. Or perhaps Bill Activist Man can begin to charge a cover at his dinner parties? They can pass the tiara between the ortolan course and the truffles spangled with jizz-o-goldflake.
