Afternoon Open Thread: Who Wants To Debate? (Dark Brandon Does) 1

I’ve received and accepted an invitation from @CNN for a debate on June 27th. Over to you, Donald. As you said: anywhere, any time, any place.

— Joe Biden (@JoeBiden) May 15, 2024

I’ve also received and accepted an invitation to a debate hosted by ABC on Tuesday, September 10th.

Trump says he’ll arrange his own transportation. I’ll bring my plane, too. I plan on keeping it for another four years.

    CNN   Later Wednesday morning, both men said they had accepted an invitation from ABC to hold a second debate on September 10.

    That’s a lot of debates proposed.  I agree that Trump will back out of most if not all.

    Trump’s team also called for the candidates to participate in four total debates – twice the number requested by Biden. The Biden campaign sidestepped questions about that request on Wednesday.

    . . .

    Informal conversations between the Biden and Trump campaigns about debates have taken place in recent weeks and were largely focused on a mutual disdain for the Commission on Presidential Debates and potential scenarios to work around the commission, three sources familiar with the discussions told CNN. The Washington Post was first to report on those conversations.

    LOL.  No love for the Commission?

    @Baud:

    The presidential debates – which everyone agrees are not really debates – are stupid and I wish we never had them to begin with. Our presidential election campaigns are not issue-oriented. Every campaign this century has been a contest of whether Democrats can convince Democratic leaning voters to show up and vote for the Democratic candidate.  When we do that, we win. Nothing in those TV gotcha shows helps make that happen better than a vigorous, well-funded GOTV campaign.

    I wonder how much awareness the Defendant has of his own cognitive deterioration. For months now, at least, every rally he holds has episodes when his brain obviously checks out. Even corporate media is starting to feel obliged to report on it. If he were aware, how would that affect his willingness to debate? Or for that matter, his willingness to testify in his current trial? And if he can be goaded into debating, how much obvious dementia will the audience be able to overlook?

    “Shield laws” are laws that blue states have passed to protect providers and patients from red state laws banning modern, best practices health care for women, including access to abortion medication :

    Most recently, a legal fellow from Americans United for Life—one of the nation’s most powerful anti-abortion groups—argues at The Federalist that shield laws are unconstitutional. Guzi He writes that the laws violate the Constitution’s extradition clause and “put the commercial interests of abortionists ahead of the safety of women and girls, not to mention the damage done to long-standing traditions of interstate cooperation.”

    The column comes just a few days after Kristi Hamrick, vice president of Students for Life Action, told NBC News, “The attempt by some states to create a little safe haven for abortion will not be successful. I think we will end up in court.” And in Amy Littlefield’s terrific piece about “the abortion pill underground” , law professor Mary Ziegler predicts that anti-choice groups might just pull it off. “I think there’s a real possibility a court is going to say, ‘Well, actually, the banned state can come for you,’” she said.

    Conservative lawyers and lobbyists once again pretending they are physicians and dictating delivery of health care to women.

    While flawed the problem isn’t POLLS per-say in my opinion. The issue is how the media weaponizes them against candidates, builds narratives and calls races months in advance before any ballots are cast. They are depressing the vote! We have a MEDIA problem. Let’s start there.

    NBC   Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump were “colluding” to exclude him from the debates they agreed to participate in on Wednesday.

    Biden and Trump said Wednesday that they accepted invitations for presidential debates hosted by CNN on June 27 and ABC News on Sept. 10.

    Kennedy would not currently qualify for the CNN debate in Atlanta based on the criteria the network laid out.

    @Scout211: It’s been acting like an abused spouse under TFG.  It sets rules after long and protracted negotiations and then TFG breaks the rules, daring the Commission or moderators to do something, asserting his ‘manliness’ in acting like the abuser.

    And the Commission backs down and allows TFG to do whatever, cuz the alternative is he won’t participate anymore.

    And TFG hates the Commission for trying to impose rules and picking moderators that aren’t from Russian TV, or their US surrogates.

    @Anonymous At Work: Yes, the debate won’t happen until the VP is crowned chosen. And now Trump has given Noem some wiggle room so she may think she’s back in the beauty contest.

    CNNFormer President Donald Trump praised South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem as a “terrific person” when asked in an interview about the backlash she received over revelations in her new book that she shot and killed her 14-month-old dog.

    “She had a bad week. We all have bad weeks,” Trump told radio hosts Clay Travis and Buck Sexton in an interview that aired Tuesday.

    “Couple of rough stories, there’s no question about it,” the former president said. “Until this week, she was doing incredibly well. And she got hit hard and sometimes you do books and you have some guy writing a book and you maybe don’t read it as carefully, you know. You have ghost writers do it, they help you, and they, in this case, didn’t help too much.”

    I commented yesterday about the visceral racism of Dakota whites toward the native tribes and how it’s great to see them pushing back like this.

    Of course Noem’s probably never set foot on a reservation so is probably shrugging her tan shoulders and thinking “no big deal”.

    What would be great if electorally, the tribes there could affect a statewide election outcome, ie., toss her sorry ass out of office.  Or if the Orange Fart Cloud picks her for VP (he won’t), it’ll galvanize them to the extent that it might put SD in play.

He said to me something like “Don’t you think I can do that?” My husband sleeps about 12-16 hours a day, walks incredibly slowly, and has balance issues, yet he thinks he can climb onto a ladder and install a ceiling fan! Five years ago, he could have. One of the nurses we had come to our house after he got out of the hospital told me they tend to think they still do things they used to do, so if they were the cook they think they still do the cooking, and so on.

They also used “registered voters” instead of “likely voters,” even though it’s well-known that the latter is much more predictive. Biden was ahead or tied in likely voters.

    I don’t think the poll was intentionally biased; I think that FTFNYT is not interested in paying for a quality poll (they are expensive) and their coverage was what was biased.

    “Donald Trump’s private plane clipped a parked corporate jet while taxiing at a Florida airport over the weekend, according to the Federal Aviation Administration and public records,” the Washington Post reports.

    WASHINGTON — An Interior Department staffer on Wednesday became the first Jewish political appointee to publicly resign in protest of U.S. support for Israel’s war in Gaza.
    Lily Greenberg Call, a special assistant to the chief of staff in the Interior Department, accused President Joe Biden of using Jews to justify U.S. policy in the conflict.
    Call had worked for the presidential campaigns of both Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, and was a longtime activist and advocate for Israel in Washington and elsewhere before joining the government.
    She is at least the fifth mid- or senior-level administration staffer to make public their resignation in protest of the Biden administration’s military and diplomatic support of the now seven-month Israeli war against Hamas.

    Who Trump picks for his running mate as the VP candidate might spark some voter interest, but otherwise the average voter will not pay attention to presidential politics until September at the earliest.

    The Summer Olympics will eat up news coverage from mid July until August 11. And the Democratic Party convention won’t happen until after this. It may be a bland affair unless there are Gaza protests.

    @JWR:

    Late on April 30, Sean Tabibian called 911 to say police were needed urgently at the University of California at Los Angeles. “All hell had broken loose,” Tabibian recalled in an interview. Masked agitators were attacking pro-Palestinian protesters on a campus quad, video footage shows, and a team of hired security guards had retreated.

    The call at 11:09 p.m. was the first of 11 that Tabibian made to police that night as the violence escalated, according to his cellphone’s call log. Other witnesses called 911 as well, records show.

    “They said they were responding,” said Tabibian, a local business executive and UCLA alumnus who was near campus around the time commotion erupted at the encampment, and who said he was concerned that protesters had been discriminating against Jewish students. “They kept saying they’re responding, they’re responding.”

    While a small UCLA patrol could be seen in footage briefly early on, law enforcement agencies did not move in to stop the violence until 3 hours and 34 minutes after Tabibian’s first 911 call, a Washington Post examination has found — a delay that prolonged one of the most violent altercations since pro-Palestinian protesters began setting up encampments on college campuses across the country this spring.

    The examination — based on evidence including more than 200 videos, emergency radio transmissions, text messages and interviews with more than a dozen witnesses — illuminates the stakes for university and local officials as they decide if and when to call police to deal with pro-Palestinian encampments. Elsewhere police have been accused of using heavy-handed tactics, but at UCLA, where university policy discourages calling police preemptively, campus police as well as the Los Angeles Police Department and California Highway Patrol are facing scrutiny for their hands-off approach that night.

    It’s not clear why police waited so long to respond. But in the hours before they took action, at least 16 people were visibly injured, the majority of them pro-Palestinian, including two protesters who could be seen with blood streaking across their faces and soaking into their clothes, videos and images show. The counterprotesters ignited at least six fireworks; struck protesters at least 20 times with wooden planks, metal poles and other objects; and punched or kicked at least eight protesters.

    @Kay: On a related note, Republicans are now talking about a nationwide ban on no-fault divorce.

    Ben Carson, who is often named as a potential running mate for Donald Trump, is out with a new book in which he calls for an end to no-fault divorce laws in the United States. “For the sake of families, we should enact legislation to remove or radically reduce incidences of no-fault divorce,” Carson writes in “The Perilous Fight,” released Tuesday.

    Research has shown that no-fault divorce correlates with reductions in domestic violence and suicide rates among women. A 2015 study found that women are more likely than men to initiate divorces. In a 2016 sermon, now-House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., listed no-fault divorce laws as one of the causes turning the US into a “completely amoral society.”

    Speaking of Gaza, I heard an interview this past Sunday with one of the faculty arrested at the UCLA campus, and he talks about the violent “counter-prottesters” that night, none of whom have been arrested.

    The reactions to the protests have been a mess, but I am not sure that anyone has clearly identified who the counter protestors were, based on the news reports I have read about and heard. Some on scene reporters I mostly trust noted that counter protestors refused to identify themselves when interviewed.

    @Kay:

    If reproductive-freedom states shield laws for providers who do abortions on women who have traveled there from states where abortions are prohibited are unconstitutional because of the extradition clause of the US constitution,  then states where marijuana is illegal could prosecute colorado dispensary owners/employees who serve customers from those states who travel to colorado where they buy and consume it entirely while in colorado without bringing any back to their home state.  Or Nevada casinos could be prosecuted for allowing customers from any remaining state where commercial gambling is illegal to play at Vegas blackjack tables, going home after losing some if the money they brought with them from their home state.

    That is a completely back-ass-wards misinterpretation of the meaning of the extradition clause, which instead is intended to apply to a person who commits an act in state A which is criminal in state A and then travels to state B where it is legal.  But state A cannot prohibit its residents from traveling to B and conducting activities that are perfectly legal in B.

    Sure, that’s a major improvement over mainstream US News Media, but twelve over-caffeinated weightlifters pounding their balls flat with cast-iron skillet pans while shrieking Land Of Our Fathers in the original Elvish would qualify as better too, so it’s hardly a bloody compliment.
