Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Not all heroes wear capes.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

The world has changed, and neither one recognizes it.

No Kings: Americans standing in the way of bad history saying “Oh, Fuck No!”

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.”

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

You cannot love your country only when you win.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

How stupid are these people?

Donald Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

Waiting for Helene

#97L has been added to the books. Remarkable agreement (at least with GFS & Euro ensembles) this far out. Maybe #Helene

A large tropical cyclone is likely to form in the northern Caribbean or the southern Gulf of Mexico sometime in the next day or two. Once the storm is named, we’ll know it be Helene. For the Jackals in western Florida and southern Alabama, today would be a great time to start preparing for a large, likely major hurricane to come ashore by Thursday. Start filling jugs three quarters full of water and placing them in the fridge/freezer; fill up the gas tank and make plans to head inland or for the hills.

Be safe

JD is the Out-Guy on the Trump Sales Team

JD is the Out-Guy on the Trump Sales Team 1

I frequently see posts like these on Bluesky and Twitter.  They started when JD made an ass of himself in a donut shop, but yesterday’s incident when he held up two dozen eggs and claimed that eggs are $4 a dozen when a sign showing $2.99/dozen was legible behind him is another example.  He’s consistently had small crowds and there’s been more than one example where his staging looks awful.

I don’t think the answer is as simple as “they hate him and want to embarrass him.”  Instead, I think he’s the “out-guy” on the sales team.  He’s Shelley in Glengarry Glen Ross, if you remember Jack Lemmon’s character in that film.

JD is the Out-Guy on the Trump Sales Team 2

I’ve spent a lot of time observing sales culture, especially sales culture where sales is in charge of other parts of the company, and don’t know what they’re doing.   The Trump organization is a pure bottom-feeding sales team, selling a dubious “brand” that they try to slap on everything with Donald as the head of sales..  That’s the only thing he’s somewhat good at – everything else he’s done is a failure.  Some characteristics of a sales-led organization:

  • Sales thinks they’re incredibly bright, insightful and important.  They’re some of the biggest fart huffers on the planet.  They watch videos and attend conferences where other salespeople convince them that good ideas, positivity, and savvy dealmaking are all that’s needed to succeed in business.  Actual planning or follow through isn’t part of their success formula.
  • Sales loves to do things that look like action but are basically nothing.  COVID put a crimp in their game, but old-school sales guys like Trump love nothing more than hopping on a plane for a meeting.  The meeting might not accomplish shit, and it could just as easily been a Zoom or a phone call, but flying to a customer’s location is a way to look busy, gain frequent flyer miles, and have a couple of nice dinners on the company’s dime.  It’s no surprise that Trump loves his private plane with the gold toilets.  The 2016 campaign was heaven for him, because he could fly everywhere and just riff for an hour or two to his adoring fans.
  • The head of sales is highly influenced by the “in-guys” on the team.  These guys can whisper in his ear and get him to do things that he might otherwise have second thoughts about.  Don Jr is an in-guy (at times) and he apparently pushed Donald to choose JD.
  • When the organization is struggling, instead of systematically addressing the issues, the head of sales looks for a new savior to come and fix everything.  This is a point where ambitious wannabe in-guys can wield outsized influence.
  • If the organization is doing fine but needs to grow, the a new savior with a new strategy will catapult the organization to new heights.  The in-guys often start out as a savior.
  • When the in-guys think the new savior isn’t doing well, or some other team member isn’t doing well, they shit talk that team member to the head of sales, and also passive aggressively work within the organization to strew banana peels in his path.  Sales leaders hate negativity and are too chickenshit to fire anyone (that’s one of the ways that The Apprentice is total fiction), so the out-guy is generally forced to quit since they can’t endure the stream of shit falling on their head.

So, in the case of JD, Don Jr (in-guy) whispered in daddy’s ear to convince him that JD was a new savior. The new savior strategy was to get more incels to vote for Trump.  At the time, the campaign was (in their view) doing great, so JD was sold as the guy who could whisper the right things into a group of voters who would vote for Trump if they could only get out of their mom’s basement.

JD shit the bed almost immediately, and then Harris arrived on the scene, so there’s panic on the streets of West Palm.  The sales leader, Donald, lashes out at everyone.   The bat signal goes out, and people like Corey Lewandowski and Laura Loomer now have Trump’s ear.  Whoever the current in-guys are, they quietly find ways to fuck Vance.  They advise Trump to distance from him, and they also cut the advance budget and put the biggest fuckups on JD’s advance team.

So, I guess from one perspective, his advance people hate him and want to embarrass him.  But the reason isn’t just random animus.  JD’s getting out-guy treatment, and poor advance work is just one of many indicators.

Dept. of Legal Sideshows: United States vs. Google II – Ad Tech Boogaloo

This post is in: Domestic Politics, Open Threads

The second Gilded Age we’re currently living through is something, huh? Our modern plutocrats are funding their own space programs; our modern tech monopolies spread conspiracy theories while squashing small businesses. However, some holdovers from the first Gilded Age may help us alleviate these plagues: there are multiple federal antitrust cases winding through the courts taking aim at big tech. Two of these ongoing cases are against Google, and both allege violations of the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890.

The first case, United States vs. Google LLC (2020) went to trial last year, and this summer, Judge Amit Mehta found that Google had an illegal search engine monopoly. He’s given DOJ regulators until December to come up with recommendations for what should be done to Google’s search monopoly. Meanwhile, United States vs. Google LLC (2023) began proceedings at the start of this month.

This second trial is looking at the advertising side of Google, with a narrow focus on how Google controls advertising on news sites. According to Karina Montoya at the Center for Journalism and Liberty (a left-leaning think tank), a DOJ win in this second case has the potential to transform how news websites are funded.

It’s understandable that we’re all preoccupied by the election, but it’s worth keeping a weather eye on these cases. Below the jump, a brief overview of the government’s argument in the ad monopoly case, plus some links to journalists and resources you may want to check out if this interests you.

Defenders of Democracy in Michigan, Ohio, Florida and Wisconsin

On of our lurkers passed along a link to his friend Sara’s new short film: The Officials.

It’s non paywalled at Time.com, and it’s about the people in the trenches who organize and staff elections in Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Florida.  It features people whose names you might not recall, but you will likely recall the stories about them.  Like Meagan Wolfe – remember the woman the Republicans tried to throw out of office in in Wisconsin?

Sara Archambault is a Sundance Documentary Lab fellow, and works at the Kennedy School of Govt. at Harvard. Here previous feature, No Time To Fail, was about election officials in Rhode Island in the 2020 election.

These people take their jobs, and the sanctity of elections, so seriously.  It must be exponentially painful when the lies are spread and they are attacked for their good work.

If you have time, take a few minutes and watch it for inspiration.

The Officials: a 25-minute film

Trump and Vance talk a lot about “freedom” – meaning the government should be free to invade your doctor’s office, your school library, and even your bedroom.

Yesterday, Pennsylvania said it loud and clear: we’re not going to have it. pic.twitter.com/To6LvMegmT

Republican activists in swing states say they have seen little sign of the teams tasked with knocking on doors and turning out infrequent voters on behalf of Donald Trump. https://t.co/XaXEq3bvts

— The Associated Press (@AP) September 22, 2024

Per the Associated Press, in Michigan — “Republicans in swing states say they see scant signs of groups door-knocking for Trump”:

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Republican activists in swing states say they have seen little sign of the teams tasked with knocking on doors and turning out infrequent voters on behalf of Donald Trump, raising concerns about the party’s presidential nominee relying on outside groups for an important part of his campaign operations.

Trump and the Republican National Committee he controls opted to share get-out-the-vote duties in key parts of the most competitive states this year with groups such as America PAC, the organization supported by billionaire Elon Musk.

It is difficult to demonstrate that something is not happening. But with fewer than 50 days until the Nov. 5 election, dozens of Republican officials, activists and operatives in Michigan, North Carolina and other battleground states say they have rarely or never witnessed the group’s canvassers. In Arizona and Nevada, the Musk-backed political action committee replaced its door-knocking company just this past week.

Albatrossity

Day three On The Road was a drive from Gallup NM to a wonderful B&B near Sierra Vista AZ. Here are some highlights from that day, and the next morning at Ramsey Canyon Preserve in the Huachucha Mountains.

It was the monsoon season in the desert southwest, and there were multiple times I saw distant thunderstorms, and a few times that I drove through rain briefly. None of these storms filled up a dry wash for a flash flood event, but that is always on your mind when you drive around this county in monsoon season. Here’s a storm brewing in Arizona.
