Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

When I was faster i was always behind.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

Cancel the cowardly Times and Post and set up an equivalent monthly donation to ProPublica.

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

A fool as well as an oath-breaker.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

“I was told there would be no fact checking.”

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

So fucking stupid, and still doing a tremendous amount of damage.

A Special Moment at the Convention

by John Cole|  August 23, 20243:14 pm| 343 Comments

This post is in: John Cole Presents "This Fucking Old House"

I’ve just had an afterglow the entire day I feel so good after the convention, and I will talk about that more later on, but I wanted to highlight what was, for me, at least, a very special moment of the convention, when the crowd cheered so much for Elizabeth Warren that she was moved to tears:

It feels like so long ago but Warren was my absolute first choice in 2020 and I don’t think I will ever see a set of plans and platform as accessible and understandable as hers were, and on top of that, the way she explained extremely complicated things to people and just the overall kindness and decency that came through when she spoke just made me love her. She apparently didn’t have the rizz or the it factor and years of coalition building that it takes to become President, but she is an absolute gem of a person and as I have stated elsewhere she is one of a handful of politicians who I would run headfirst through a brick wall for- there was just something that I found special and different and kind that I liked about her.

So it was super nice to see her get that reception and meant a lot to me. We are just so lucky that we have so many people like Harris and Warren and Big Gretch and Dana Nessel and Elissa Slotkin and Hakeem Jeffries and Max Frost and on and on and on who are rising to the occassion.

And while we are at it, parasocial relationships are so fucking weird with the way we project our own feelings onto other people. Having said that, I want everyone to know that if anyone says a mean thing or does anything to harm Ella Emhoff I am here to tell you I will fucking throw hands without hesitation. She’s just so sweet and she has that long neck and long arms and is gangly and at times awkward and has that adorable goofy smile and thick glasses she’s just so vulnerable and open and without a mean-spirited bone in her body and just carefree and happy and I will cut a motherfucker who tries to harm her or change her in any way. You know she’s the most supportive friend in her peer group and is just the kind of person you want to be around in a crisis- not because she will fix everything, but just because she gives you a reason to fight and understands the value of just being there for someone.

I mean look at her:

A Special Moment at the Convention

Like Hope and Gus Walz, she is the type of kid that every time I see them I mentally say to myself “these kids need to be fucking protected at all cost.”

Parasites Weaken the Host

Parasites Weaken the Host
A blood sucking Lamprey.

Why does Vance have terrible advance work: tiny crowds, a “spontaneous” trip to a donut shop where nobody knew he was coming, appearing on a podium stacked with cardboard boxes?

Why was the Republican convention a low-key, muted, partially empty, boring event, especially when compared to this week’s Democratic event?

It’s because Trump (and his wholly-owned subsidiary, the RNC) isn’t raising money, and he’s not spending the money he has raised:

Since the start of 2023, Trump’s official campaign committee has spent a total $117 million, compared to $330 million from the Biden-turned-Harris operation over the same period. (That doesn’t include fundraising expenses from joint fundraising committees, or funds directed to other Trump groups for his legal bills.)

Trump continued to be massively outspent in July: His campaign reported spending $24.3 million, compared to $80.7 million in spending from the Biden-turned-Harris campaign committee.

More than half of the Trump campaign’s July spending, $14.1 million, went to paid media buys, $13.5 million of which came after Biden dropped out and endorsed Harris on July 21. Direct mail ($3.4 million) and air travel ($3.3 million) accounted for the Trump campaign’s next-largest expense categories. The campaign also spent just shy of $1 million on polling.

The July spending total was a substantial increase for Trump’s operation, which had spent just shy of $10 million in June. Advertising — including TV, digital and mail — is among the easiest expense categories for campaigns to scale up in a relatively short time frame. Campaigns also get lower TV ad rates than outside groups in the months before an election.

But the totals for July were far less than what Trump was spending when he was seeking reelection four years ago. In July 2020, amid an election cycle altered by the Covid-19 pandemic, Trump’s campaign committee spent $65 million — including $34 million on placed media and $13 million on online and text message advertising. At that time, his campaign committee and the Republican National Committee also had a combined nearly 800 staffers on payroll, according to a POLITICO analysis of FEC data.

This July, the Trump campaign and the RNC had just over 300 staffers on payroll, FEC filings show. Meanwhile, the Harris campaign and the Democratic National Committee had a combined roughly 1,100 staffers last month.

The Democratic convention was clearly an expensive event, and it should have been — the free media and attention garnered by a convention probably pays back the investment on the convention ten- or hundred-fold.  I realize I’m in a bit of a bubble, but I sure don’t remember the Republican convention making much of an impact — it was a real “going through the motions” event.  As for Trump’s campaign spending, I’ll bet there are Senate campaigns that spent $10 million in June.  It’s just a pathetic effort.

The Trump superpacs are spending, of course, but some of them are run by billionaires with their own personal agendas, and if anything’s been clear in the past few years, it’s that the average Master of the Universe billionaire can barely handle assembling a ham sandwich left to their own devices, nevermind a political campaign organization.

None of this is to say that Trump’s underfunded campaign will lead to a Harris victory, but it’s hard for a bloodsucker to detach from the host once it’s gotten a good grip.  Instead of draining the RNC dry, he’s going to have to run a real campaign, and that’s a big stretch for an old man with a tiny staff.

Toward the tail end of the last thread, I mentioned I was baking banana bread. Tada!

Friday Odds & Ends (Open Thread)

My secret ingredients are extremely ripe bananas — you want them to be half a hour from so rotten they’re fit only for hurling (along with other spoiled produce) at a stage occupied by lying creeps — and macadamia nuts. The latter are spendy but worth it!

***

Still coming down from the high of the convention. I’ve watched a lot of them, including two previous during which I was genuinely excited about the nominee (Barack Obama and then Hillary Clinton). Nothing came close to this one.

The near-flawless execution is all the more remarkable when you consider the timing constraints. Kay is right; the Democratic Party is an American institution that has proved its resilience in this nutso timeline.

Talk about whatever!

Good News Open Thread: FDA Approves Updated Covid-19 Boosters

Today, we approved and granted emergency use authorization for updated mRNA COVID-19 vaccines (2024-2025 formula) to include a monovalent (single) component that corresponds to the Omicron variant KP.2 strain of SARS-CoV-2. https://t.co/pul33IEnIw

— U.S. FDA (@US_FDA) August 22, 2024

We’ve all been waiting for this upgrade. Shots should be available as soon as next week:

Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved and granted emergency use authorization (EUA) for updated mRNA COVID-19 vaccines (2024-2025 formula) to include a monovalent (single) component that corresponds to the Omicron variant KP.2 strain of SARS-CoV-2. The mRNA COVID-19 vaccines have been updated with this formula to more closely target currently circulating variants and provide better protection against serious consequences of COVID-19, including hospitalization and death. Today’s actions relate to updated mRNA COVID-19 vaccines manufactured by ModernaTX Inc. and Pfizer Inc.

In early June, the FDA advised manufacturers of licensed and authorized COVID-19 vaccines that the COVID-19 vaccines (2024-2025 formula) should be monovalent JN.1 vaccines. Based on the further evolution of SARS-CoV-2 and a rise in cases of COVID-19, the agency subsequently determined and advised manufacturers that the preferred JN.1-lineage for the COVID-19 vaccines (2024-2025 formula) is the KP.2 strain, if feasible.…

Per the Washington Post, “New coronavirus vaccines are now approved. Here’s what to know” [gift link]:

The Food and Drug Administration approved new mRNA coronavirus vaccines Thursday, clearing the way for shots manufactured by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna to start hitting pharmacy shelves and doctor’s offices within a week…

The FDA has yet to approve an updated vaccine from Novavax, which uses a more conventional vaccine development method but has faced financial challenges.

Our scientific understanding of coronavirus vaccines has evolved since they debuted in late 2020. Here’s what to know about the new vaccines:

Why are there new vaccines?
The coronavirus keeps evolving to overcome our immune defenses, and the shield offered by vaccines weakens over time. That’s why federal health officials want people to get an annual updated coronavirus vaccine designed to target the latest variants. They approve them for release in late summer or early fall to coincide with flu shots that Americans are already used to getting…

Who needs a new coronavirus vaccine?

The United States differs from other countries in recommending an updated coronavirus vaccine for everyone except young infants, rather than just those at heightened risk for severe disease because they are 65 or older, are moderately to severely immunocompromised or have serious medical conditions…

How long does vaccine protection last?

CDC data shows that the effectiveness of the 2023-2024 vaccine, meant to reduce emergency room visits and hospitalizations, declined sharply more than four months after receiving it. But the risk of hospitalization still remains low for most people, which made it harder for the CDC to compare outcomes for people who received an updated shot with those who did not…

Vice President Kamala Harris had one job last night: show us a president. She fucking nailed it.

Brava!

VP Harris watched by little girl in audience.

Meanwhile, her opponent called in to Fox News to whine, and even the corrupt Murdoch flunkies cut him off after 10 minutes of rambling complaints and accidental keypad beeping. What a loser!

I believe we’re gonna win in November.

On The Road – UncleEbeneezer – Early-Summer, Eastern Sierra Adventure (Part 5-of-5): Lon Chaney Cabin

by WaterGirl|  August 23, 20245:00 am| 14 Comments

This post is in: Eastern Sierra, On The Road, Photo Blogging

I wasn’t going to be able to make it to the lakes on the North Fork Trail, so instead I decided to use the Lon Chaney Cabin as my lunch and turn-back point for my hike:

“Before there were any of the superstars that grace magazines, social media postings, and every aspect of modern day life, there were a smaller series of stars of early Hollywood that first America, and then the world knew. Out of this group, by far, the most infamous was Lon Chaney. While Lon Chaney has somewhat disappears into the mists of history, in his heyday, he was well-known as “The Manof a Thousand Faces”, and turned in iconic performances as the Phantom of the Opera, and the Hunchback of Notre Dame, among many others. Although there are many interesting facts about Lon Chaney, one of the more little-known facts about him is that he had a 1,288 square foot cabin built in the Inyo National Forest. While Lon Chaney is long gone the cabin remains to this day, and is a great halfway point for a day-hike through some of the more pristine wilderness in the Eastern Sierra.”

On The Road - UncleEbeneezer - Early-Summer, Eastern Sierra Adventure (Part 5-of-5): Lon Chaney Cabin 6
Lon Chaney Cabin, Big Pine Creek, CAMay 23, 2024

“After passing through a good section of the forest, the cabin will appear through the trees on the left (South) side of the trail. While it is marked as the “Big Pine Creek Wilderness Ranger Hut”, it is indeed the Lon Chaney Cabin. Designed by Paul Revere Williams, a famous Los Angeles architect, it was built for only $12,000 in 1929. Unfortunately, visitors are no longer allowed to access the interior of the cabin as it is Forest Service property; however, hikers and backpackers can utilize the porch and exterior areas of the cabin to rest, relax, and take in the bucolic views of Big Pine Creek which passes right in front of the cabin, before turning around and heading back down the trail. From the parking area to the cabin, it is 3.5 miles with 1,700 feet of elevation gain; for a roundtrip distance of 7 miles.”

Fun fact about @Pink who is performing at the DNC tonight. She gives away 100,000’s of banned books at her concerts.

She gives away copies of books removed from schools in some areas of Florida like dictionary’s, The Diary of Anne Frank and more.
