I now understand why Andrew Sullivan doesn’t drive a car.
He’d be screaming, wetting his panties, and veering into a ditch the moment a grey haired lady started backing out of a driveway into light traffic on a clear day, 100 yards in front of him on a six-lane thoroughfare.
What a flaming nitwit.
TheMightyTrowel
I said this earlier, I’ll say it again: I spent the weekend in Tasmania eating and drinking the lovely local produce, walking on hilltops and visiting historic sites. I only turned on the internet to ask for some inspiration in the garden thread (thanks!!!). I haven’t slept that well in months.
Go outside, breathe some air, hug your dog/cat/child/DVD collection and unplug for a couple of days. I promise the world won’t end.
Also too: you’ll be spared Andrew Sullivan’s view-from-jumping-out-your-window.

Sullivan right now.
KG
Yeah, I still love Sullivan, but yeah, he needs to chill the fuck out
Violet
An entire thread dedicated to him. His ego didn’t need any help.
In other news:
Romney can’t handle questions from kids. Lame. I like the President’s team’s response:

Let’s end it now.
KG
@Violet: So, wtf is going to happen when Romney takes questions from adults at the town hall debate?
PurpleGirl
@Violet: President’s response — LOL

Sully is indeed a sad sack of shit. Too bad you cannot email him your contempt.
caring and sensitive
It seems a shame. I found Balloon Juice about 5 years ago with a link from Sully, who I used to read regularly. I gave him up about 2 years ago because when it’s all said and done he really is a bedwetting nitwit.
BGinCHI
You could read Sullivan, or you could watch the latest season of Damages now streaming on Netflix.

Sully is not worth my attention, so instead let’s focus on my current earworm.

@Violet: GodDAMN! I love the Obama team!
Mitt didn’t go on because he was afraid of being slimed if he answered a question with “I don’t know.”
It also appears that he doesn’t take time (or budget expenses) for children. I wonder what that household was like growing up.
RaflW
Oh, and this via Jonathan Bernstein: Pollster US popular vote estimate, now w/Pew poll included, +2 Obama (47.9-45.9).
So Sully’s mega-vapours are about one datapoint. One.
But then, we’ve known for a very long time that he can spin up into a tizzy with minimal provocation.
This freakout, though, really makes me think he’s never really been a conservative, or a Tory, or whatever Hayekian crapola he thinks he is. He’s far to defeato-crat/emotional ninny to be an actual principled conservative (and there aren’t any, that’s been the horrible joke all along…)
Mark S.
@Violet:
Mitt’s job is not to worry about those people—he’ll never convince them that they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.
YellowJournalism
@Mark S.: He forgets that some of those people may be voters in four years if he were going up for re-election. Yes, the show targets young children, but I remember watching things like that as a teen to see how the candidates handles themselves and issues that were closer to my life experiences. I also had teachers who used the show in social studies classes because of the excellent production it was.

Who the fuck is Sarah and where did she suddenly appear out of? I don’t mean suddenly right now, I mean suddenly back when you suddenly appeared.

Sully is notoriously ready to get carried away.
On the other hand, I totally agreed with his play-by-play during the debate. It was catastrophic. Not so much what Barack said (or failed to say) but the optics and body language, especially the looking down. It was bad, bad, bad, bad, bad. I have real hope that the debate won’t be decisive in the big picture, but man alive, that night was fucking abysmal. Did the campaign not know that that shit was going to be on TV?
Sarah, Proud and Tall
@LT:
Hello. My name is Sarah Howard. I am a fictional sweary old lady who is (often) a thinly disguised version of a real sweary old person. How are you?

I’m watching the latest Moyers and Company episode, an interview with Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas, from Univision. Really interesting show, they’re both very interesting, smart and sharp people. Salinas mentioned they were going to start doing some news shows in English which would be pretty cool. I suggest checking out the interview when you have a spare hour.

I gave up Sullivan when he went to Tina Brown’s place. Gave up HuffPo about the same time. Gave up TPM last year.
My political blog list is down to single digits.
Jarret R.
I remember Sullivan’s epic meltdown following Scott Brown’s election. He was utterly convinced that the health care law was dead, never to rise from the grave again. We all know how that turned out, and now Scott Brown is behind in the polls. Seriously, someone needs to get Sully a stiff drink. Now.

@freelancer: Indistinguishable from me, reading Sully.

Check out his twitter. He’s still going nuts. He has a sad because Obama was supposed to be the next Reagan. Didn’t Reagan come across terribly in his first reelection debate back in 1984?
He’s calling everybody haters and saying that Obama is arrogant and not taking his campaign responsibilities seriously. He’s also saying Obama has gone bye-bye. It’s a sight to behold. He doesn’t like being teased at all.
amk
now sully is tweeting in all caps.

I’m also fairly certain he will be making the rounds of cable news soon to declare the election over and that Obama has lost.

@TheMightyTrowel: aw, I’m soooo jealous. I have some friends in Tazzie doing amazing gardening: they’re planting rare natives, especially trees, completely for posterity. I’ve never actually gotten to Tasmania (know them from MEL) and would just love to get there sometime.
Not not not and would never give a damn about what a pom like AS spews.
Jenn
@Violet: Though ‘first candidate since Kerry’ to decline does have just 1 presidential election in between! But yeah it’s silly of Mitt to decline – those kids are going to vote some day, and Republicans have enough of a youth problem as it is. Short-sighted from a team perspective, even if it did nothing for Mitt himself.
TexasMango
@Jenn: It’s not for the kid’s. It’s for their parents.
Kinda like when Republicans campaign in minority neighborhoods to impress white suburbanites that they aren’t racist.
KG
@Hill Dweller: so is mine… here, Sully, LGF, Hewiitt (to see what the testing talking points are), and Bainbrifge occasionally on the more legal side. Maybe once a week I’ll click through to a couple of blogs I use to read that are still on a blog roll, but that’s it. When I was in law school and blogging, I was reading probably 60 a day, plus 5 newspapers online.

@Smiling Mortician: Why the fuck should I avoid the brown acid? It’s never done me no wrong.

I have promised myself not to read Sully until next week. I mean–he thinks Obama does not take the election seriously? That he has to earn our trust back after the debate? WTF! Did he get lobotomized when he moved to nyc?

Folks (at least some), I suggest Decaf. Goodness gracious sakes alive (this was Coach Wooden’s most serious “curse”); the Pew poll that had Obama at +8 was bullshit. Now, another BS poll from them with Romney up; don’t know what their issue is…
…and couldn’t care less. National polls now have little value. It’s all EC now, Folks; indeed, shit, I’d be laughing my ass off if Obama took the EC and Romney won popular. Romney will win some states with monster margins, but, no one will care if he loses in the College.

@TexasMango: Good God, what a twit. I wish he would channel some of that British stiff upper lip. Honestly, if he’s going to freak out like this over one off night … my kingdom for a pundit with a sense of proportion. And history. Not to mention humor.
Anatoliĭ Lъudьvigovich Bzyp (Mumphrey, et al.)
Does anybody know how the fuck the Daily Beast comments work? I tried to write something about that piece some guy named Buzz Bunkleyberger or something wrote about how he was a lifelong Democrat, but after he watched the debate, he’s going to vote for Romney now. It wouldn’t post what I wrote. I did write naughty words like “shit” and “ass”, but I even tried spelling them “šhít” and “aß” and it still wouldn’t post what I wrote. Does anybody else post there? Hasa anybody else had this happen?
In other, sadder, news, I buried my dog on Saturday. Dug the grave myself. Making her the last bed she’ll ever sleep in was the least I could do for her. It wasn’t any fun, but I think it helped in some small way. I went down to my mother’s house to do it, way out in the country, in a little spot where three of our other dogs are buried. I asked her minister if he would come by and give a little service for us, and he did, which also helped…

@SectionH: It was my first visit. I’ve since been offered the chance to stay free at a guest cottage the parents of a colleague own on their orchard on the north shore. Woo!
Jenn
@TexasMango: Sure, its for parents today, but as someone above mentioned, in an election or two those kids are going to be voting – it’s goofy for Repubs to just cede the playing field. Not that I mind!
Jenn
@Anatoliĭ Lъudьvigovich Bzyp (Mumphrey, et al.): I’m so sorry. Best wishes.

It’s the most sense Sullivan has made in many, many years. I’m off the Obama wagon. Stick a fork in him.

Sully is out of his mind for sure.

@amk4obama A silly man for a silly time. Obama can’t even get a DEBATE right.
Well based on that Obama wasn’t doing anything right and what the fuck was Sully supporting him for? I mean really? He needs to be shunned.
Comrade Colette Collaboratrice
@Anatoliĭ Lъudьvigovich Bzyp (Mumphrey, et al.): Damn. I’m sorry. We love them so much, and it hurts so much when they leave us. My Spot and Slash are buried behind the back fence, where I can visit them when I need to.
Sorry doesn’t do it, but it’s all I have.
Anatoliĭ Lъudьvigovich Bzyp (Mumphrey, et al.)
@Jenn:
Well, it was irritating not to have my pithy words show up, but I’ll get by. Thanks for your kind thoughts, all the same.
Nah, I know what you meant. Thank you for real. It’s been a bad few days. I’ve known that dog longer than I’ve known my wife. She was a good old girl, the best.
KG
@The Dangerman: just decided to see what the latest state polls say… most of these are Rassmussen or We Ask America (both strong R house effects)
Obama leading in Colorado (1 in Rass, 4 in a U of Denver poll)
Romney leading in Florida (2 in Rass, 3 in WAA)
Obama leads in Iowa (2 in Rass)
Obama up one in Nevada (taken the day after the debate)
Romney up 4 in North Carolina (Rass, day of the debate)
Obama up one in Ohio (Rass)
Virginia appears to be tied (two polls WAA and Rass have Romney up, 1 and 3 respectfully, and PPP has Obama up 3)
Obama leads by 2 in Wisconsin (PPP)
So, pretty much nothing has changed from 10 days ago. Ohio is a little tighter than it was, otherwise toss ups are still toss ups

I liked those guys the first time I heard them. Sound like mid70’s Kinks with the voice, arrangements, etc…
As for Sully, Jezzz. You would think a Democrat would be sucking on the end of a barrel if he believed that crap.
But its always that way with young love. The highs, then the lows.

@Anatoliĭ Lъudьvigovich Bzyp (Mumphrey, et al.): Yeah, I lost my old girl awhile back. I still miss her – she was the best dog I’ve ever known, the one against whom all other dogs are measured. My standard goodbye for beloved pets is drawing a portrait – I still haven’t been able to do hers, because each time I try, I start sobbing, and the ink runs!

@KG:
Where did Rassmussen have Ohio pre-debate?
YellowJournalism
@Sarah, Proud and Tall: I read that as “nude,” which works just as well.
As far as where you come from, I always thought you magically appeared when Emily Post drank too much absinthe and joined in an orgy during a political convention. Kind of the opposite of the Immaculate Conception.

If Obama does, in fact, read Sullivan every day, I have a suggestion for the president…why not spend the time you waste reading Sullivan preparing for debates. Or, if you don’t want to do that, then at least do something productive with your time and take a nap — being rested is important.
I’m trying to think of a worse use of a president’s time than read Sullivan’s blog, and, off hand, I can’t come up with much that doesn’t involve overdoses of tainted narcotics or reading just about any right wing blog. Other than those, everything looks pretty good by comparison.

Look, Obama’s debate performance was awful. Really awful. I watched with horror. The last thing we needed was for Obama to reinforce the wingnut talking points that he is weak and deferential (ie apology tour). I don’t know how to debate someone who lies about everything, but the President really needs to go into the debate with a solid strategy. The voters who don’t pay attention are finally starting to watch. We cannot afford to have his lead erode any more.

So, at the top of the page, Mitts sons are justifiably called out for using subtle language to refer to the POTUS, who is half-black as a “boy”
but Sarah can call Sullivan (who I am no fan of) a “white boy” and thats just fine. What a hypocrite.
