Pebble Beach Pro-Am participant Condi Rice shanked a drive into the gallery, slamming an innocent bystander in the head with the errant shot:
Rice approached the woman and asked, “Did I hit you? It was a bad shot. I’m really sorry.”
Aside from the fact that she deigned to offer an apology, this incident has striking parallels to Rice’s career in public service. Whoopsie!
Anyone digging out from Nemo today? I hope everyone’s electricity held out.

Kathleen Parker and a few other social-issue Republicans(anti-gay marriage) have started to notice the disintegration of marriage among the less educated class of Americans.
In their concern for children, they have decided to be big about it and promote marriage, whoever the parents are. It has totally escaped their notice that better educted Americans have one other thing going for them. A decent job at a living wage.
Wonder how that would change the metrics among the class at risk? Probably we will never know.

Sunny, windy and cold (30°) here in NoVa this morning. Not an unpleasant combination, as long as you don’t have to be out in it for long.
I’m getting a seethe on over a cryptic bill I received yesterday from my dermatologist. It’s for $330 and also notes an additional $290 “insurance pending” from the insurance company I haven’t used since December 2011 (and which fact I have repeatedly notified my dermatologist of).
The bill says it covers some procedure done last July, but my records show that I went in June–and that I paid (a huge amount–more than this bill) at the time. So I don’t know WTF this is all about. Sometimes there are delayed charges for lab work, but nothing indicates that. So I’m looking forward to a pleasant and informative conversation on Monday. Grr.
Further fuel to the fire is that when I went in for my latest checkup last month I got into a political argument with the dermatologist because he spontaneously went off on a wingnut rant about Obama (“You can’t trust a word that man says”) and Neal Boortz’s “fair tax” scam. When I pointed out that these sales-tax schemes are very regressive and fall disproportionately on the poor, he said, “No, it’s very fair. They don’t pay any tax until they buy something!” Serenity now.
I know this guy is a one-percenter, but I thought he was at the genteel, Michael Bloomberg end of the spectrum, not the crazy wingnut part. And where does he get off bringing up the potentially explosive issue of politics in a medical exam?! Who’s paying whom here, doc?
Sorry to get off on a rant, but I just opened the envelope while I was reading this thread and got gobsmacked. Single-payer cannot come soon enough for me. Or Medicare. Whichever comes first.

It turns out that bringing the snow shovel into the house yesterday was a good idea, since the drifting snow partly blocked the storm door. This was my start point for digging a goat path to the garage. By tonight, it’ll be back to square one, but it’s easier to clear 8 inches of heavy snow twice than 16 inches all at once.
I’ve always wondered how news directors choose the lucky reporter and cameraman who get to stand out in the thick of the storm and belabor the obvious points that it’s cold, windy, and snowy. Rotating duty roster? Short straw? Least seniority? Or top of the station manager’s shit list?

Bush always picked family friends, cronies, big money supporters for all posts. Considering who/what he could have picked for that post, I actually find Condi to be ………moderate. I think we dodged a worse bullet. Doesn’t mean she was good.
I find it interesting that in a period when the racism is so blatently reexposed in Republicans, nobody made a big deal about the black Colin Powell being secratary of state then Condi after him. To most of the population they were not that good but it didn’t matter in the election of Obama. It used to be that American blacks worried about any of them achieving prominance, then failing and that being used as an excuse by racists for not giving any other chances. The country as a whole has progressed in experience enough that that didn’t even get any talk but what is wild is why did the real paranoid racists freak so much more over Obama. It’s something about it being a democrat but it’s definately racist too. Looking back they Clinton freak out was also oddly racist. I don’t get it and don’t know what to call it. If you have aspirations to higher education, having a child in your teens is the stupidest thing you can do. (Not only the financial drain, but the time/concentration sink that will not diminish for the next six years.)
BUT, if you do not have a shot at being better educated, having a child in your teens actually makes sense. Your family is still relatively young and able to help. The web of family connections that Republicans claim to so prize are at its strongest when you are also young, and they can help with child care. Getting a 9-5 job, and the subsequent child care costs, are both off the table.
I’m not saying lower income families are any less dismayed when they are met with this challenge. But on some level, the combination of seeing no future, and the drive to reproduce, combines into an irresistible force. Looked at in this way, the typical male teen is a drag on the system, not an asset. Once conception is accomplished, he is no longer necessary.
I don’t know why the R’s are whining about this; they created these circumstances, then feel free to disparage the people who cannot escape them. Nice gig for the heartless!

@Steeplejack: Thing is that there’s a pretty good chance the doctor is not a one percenter. He thinks he is but to be in the one percent you have to make $1M a year and people who make $1M are actually on the very low end of the one percenters. My guess is that he makes less than half a million a year. More than that, if he thinks he’s going to be making $$$ w/o regular medicare and medicaid in place, he’s sadly mistaken. 60 percent of the healthcare dollar is from government. He needs to suck on that.

Rice has always struck me as someone who sold her soul to the devil. I think she is an intelligent, eloquent person who either wilfully (or due to some mental blindspot, I suppose) threw in with the Bushies. Her voice got progressively more brittle between 2000-2008 as she had to continue shoveling the manure spewing out of her bosses. I won’t say I feel sorry for her or that she didn’t cause damage by working with those guys. She strikes me as being a bit similar to Colin Powell (I’m not referring to the obvious): I think they both are intelligent people who do have a sense of honor; Powell couldn’t take working for the Shrub anymore and quit. Rice continued on to her probable detriment.
Steeplejack
@mai naem:
I thought the threshold to be a one-percenter by income (not net worth) is around $400,000 a year. He is doing that easily. He has a long established practice and is a go-to specialist for Mohs surgery and other arcane procedures.
I think the main thing is that, like a lot of high-income conservatives, he lives in a bubble of self-absorption and is clueless about a lot of things that don’t directly affect him. I remember one appointment a year or two ago. I was talking to the (very good) physician’s assistant about some two-year program she was leaving the practice to attend so she could get a higher accreditation (or maybe become an R.N.). She and her husband had just gotten approved for a loan and was really relieved about thaat. The doc came in and joined the conversation, and he was shocked–shocked!–to hear that the program was going to cost something like $60,000-70,000. For my part, I was shocked that he was so clueless about higher-education costs in general and specifically about his P.A.’s case. I do have a knack for talking to people, but it’s amazing that I was able to pick up more information in one conversation than he should have picked up in general office chitchat, even if he maintains a “no chitchat with the help” policy.
I wonder if it will hit him one day when he can’t find enough qualified people to staff his practice.
WaterGirl
@Steeplejack: I didn’t know how it was spelled until I saw it in your comment, but a really good friend of mine had to have the mohs surgery on her nose, and there were only 2 in town who did that, and there was only one you would want to go to if you had a choice.
I think she would have seen that doctor even if he worshipped the devil. There are some things you just don’t want to mess around with.
I knew you had dermatology things going on, but I’m sorry to hear it involves that. I can’t recall what they call it, but she had to go down 4 or 5 layers and had to have reconstructive surgery. But the whole thing is a miracle as far as I’m concerned, because (2 months later) you can’t even tell she had anything done.
Steeplejack
@WaterGirl:
Mohs surgery is named after the guy who “invented” it. (My guy learned it directly from him, for whatever that’s worth.) Its claim to fame is minimal tissue removal, because real-time biopsies are done between each pass of the procedure to see where next to cut and when to stop (when you get “clean edges”). It’s used a lot for anything above the neck because of the minimal tissue removal and (therefore) minimal scarring. This is in contrast (in my painful experience) to a lot of other dermatological surgery, which appears to differ from medieval barbering only in that leeches are no longer deployed.

@gvg:
I don’t think they threatened the white/conservative/wealthy power structure much.
Bush, Jr. did a commendable job in making sure his Cabinet was inclusive of minorities and women. Whether everyone performed up to the mark is a different issue.
President Clinton began the appointment of first women for ‘x’ cabinet post and first African-American in a cabinet post. Period. Bush, Jr. could’ve gone back to all white men in the cabinet, but he didn’t. He did make it a point to promote women and minorities, which I think in general terms is a good thing.
The country has progressed a lot in terms of dealing with race, since the 1970’s and 1980’s. Also, I think the fact that Powell and later Rice were somewhat the voice of whatever passed for reason against the neo-con wing of Bush, Jr.’s cabinet probably helped in their overall reputations.
Along with the fact, as far as policy goals go, the Democrats become very distinct from Republicans over the past 6-7 years, so there are differences in policy and not just personality and race voters could attribute to Obama.
President Obama, with his talk about making “fat cats pay” and demanding substantial reforms to health care, the financial services industry, etc. really did threaten the entrenched oligarchs to some degree and they lashed back in 2009 and 2010, by upping the crazy to 11.
Of course ramping up the crazy to 11 seems to be biting the oligarchs in the butt now.
I don’t think Clinton’s backlash was racist. It was more the fact he represented, as much as possible on a national stage, the DFH-Baby Boomer-era, which conservatives had diagnosed in the 1970’s and 1980’s as the root of all of America’s problem in 1992.
Why did we have a drug epidemic? Hippies, free love, etc. made that behavior acceptable.
Why were blacks fairing worse than whites? LBJ’s Great Society, especially welfare, destroyed the black family unit.
If Clinton gained popular legitimacy – he’s charismatic, relatively young in 1992 and a Southerner – whatever right-wingers had gained in the culture wars of the 1970’s and 1980’s wouldn’t stick; people, who had started voting Republican because of cultural issues may have been charmed into voting for President Clinton and the Democrats.
I don’t think it’s a coincidence so much of the culture war rhetoric really seemed to hit a fever pitch in the 1990’s.
