The LA BJ meetup (when I write it like that it sounds so much tawdrier and more exciting than it really is, which, from my experience in Austin, is a bunch of olds like me having drinks and some eats and bitching about their knees when they try to get up from the picnic table):
Some pretty good looking dyed-in-the-wool, 100% Pelosi-loving, abortion-having, Jesus-hating, gun-grabbing, Streisand-singing, dope-smoking, dirty fucking hippy “FUCK YOU I RECYCLE DRIVE A PRIUS AND SUPPORT A LIVEABLE WAGE” West Coast liberal moonbats, if I do fucking say so myself.
FSM bless ya.
PsiFighter37
I’m afraid to ask how many drinks you’ve had since your last post.
SIA
GREEN BALLOOOOONS!
Yatsuno
@PsiFighter37: I found you in the pic! Your affianced is quite a lucky lady. :)
PsiFighter37
Oh and I forget all the names of everyone who showed up, but included in the photo is myself, Roger Moore, Mr. Powell, Warren Terra, and Bill. Everyone else got drowned out by the awesomeness of Flogging Molly blasting in the background.
John Cole
@PsiFighter37: Nothing but water for the last few hours. Just watching some tube.
How many minutes before Anne Laurie stomps on this post? I give it five. Anymore, I write a post, publish it, come back five minutes later and schedule Anne’s post for 30 minutes later.
Violet
@PsiFighter37: You’re in the grey t-shirt right? You look exactly as I thought you would. Looks like a great crowd and a fun time. Love the green balloons!
trollhattan
Watching Maher, and I want to jump through the Samsung and strangle Greenwald. What a waste of human flesh. Whoever the NRO limey is can kiss my ass also, too. He’s trying like a good little fella to fly the Benghazi kite. Questions must be answered. I have a few answers.
trollhattan
“The MVP of WTF: Michele Bachmann.” This, I’m stealing.
PsiFighter37
@John Cole: She’ll step on it when it hurts the most/hurts so good.
@Violet: I guess the Starcraft-themed user name lends itself to someone with Asian heritage? :P
The green balloons were all Roger’s idea. Smart thing to bring those since I was late, courtesy of an accident right at the exit I was supposed to get off at.
Radio One
they got the beat
Violet
@PsiFighter37: It’s your smile and your hair. Exactly as I pictured you. No idea why…just how you I figured you’d look from your comments.
Roger Moore
I thought the green balloons were the standard Balloon-Juice gathering symbol. They certainly seem to work.
Yatsuno
@Roger Moore: Have to hunt some own next meet-up in Seatown. Which IIRC involves our young PsiFighter IINM.
Feebog
@ Roger Moore:
The balloons were inspired. Mrs Feebog and I had a great time!
Suffern ACE
ordering Hansen’s Mandarine Lime? I’ve been drinking some myself this evening.
handy
How is that place? I still want to go there, it’s literally a quarter mile from where I live (couldn’t make it LA BJers–we got babysitting tonight for the baby and wifey wanted to go to Americana blecch but whatevs).
Suzanne
AHHHH I am so jealous. I wanna have a Phoenix/Tucson meetup. So. FUN.
@PsiFighter37: Ae you by chance my friend Clayton from grad school? ;)
PsiFighter37
@Suzanne: Er no, but I can be if you want(?!)
David Koch
I see Luigi from Super Mario Bros. was at the head of the table.
Suzanne
@PsiFighter37: No need, but if you are ever looking for your doppelgänger, I can tell you where to look.
PsiFighter37
And we’ve dispersed. Y’all in SoCal are a good group of people. Keep it real.
Thor Heyerdahl
I know there are a bunch of BJ-reading Canucks in Toronto…anyone want to do a meetup?
Mnemosyne
@Suffern ACE:
That is me, sadly. I don’t think I’ve ever taken a non-awful picture.
I wasn’t kidding about how shy and retiring I am IRL, but Feebog (and Mrs. Feebog), James Powell, and Something Fabulous all forced me to talk to them, so it worked out. Turns out that Something Fabulous and I are both from the Chicago suburbs, which is very funny after a couple of beers (or a couple of Hansen’s in my case since I don’t like beer).
Mnemosyne
Also, too, John, we were in the Valley, not West L.A. Get it right.
(Which Valley, you say? Is there more than one?)
dance around in your bones
This makes me want to meet Santa Barbara BJ’ers, even though I’m kinda shy. I know there are a few.
Y’all look so nice and normal! Even you, PsiFighter, despite your drunken online persona!
BillinGlendaleCA
@handy: 1/4 a mile? Are we neighbors handy?
Mnemosyne
@dance around in your bones:
The northbound Amtrak goes right past Golden Road — you could take the train down from SB and one of us locals could swing by the Glendale station and pick you up.
BillinGlendaleCA
That was a lot of fun. Good thing Roger Moore brought the green balloons, otherwise I’d wandered all over the place.
Bill +0
Warren Terra
@Mnemosyne: The train tracks are, according to Google Maps, 100 feet away. Judging by the sound of the whistle, I think that the train may actually pass through Golden Road.
Mnemosyne
@Warren Terra:
If you go on a lazy weekend afternoon, people cheer the trains as they go past. That’s why the engineers blow the horn as they pass.
Debbie(aussie)
It is really nice to put faces to names(nyms).
Ruckus
A good time had by all. It’s nice to put faces with the names.
dance around in your bones
@Mnemosyne: But the meet is over, no? Maybe next time you come to SB we could (gasp!) meet in real life. I live on The Mesa.
If I don’t chicken out. I could show you some of my knitting and needlepoint :)
Roger Moore
@dance around in your bones:
Yep. I think we’re mostly posting from home now, though some crazy people might still be using their smartphones. I think it would be fair to say that a good time was had by all.
James E. Powell
Very nice time with very nice people. I’d say more, but then I would sound like Cole when the liquor makes him maudlin.
Mnemosyne
@dance around in your bones:
I think we’re planning to be back up that way in the fall. We always stay near Valerio St. and State St. We could meet halfway at Cardigans.
BillinGlendaleCA
@James E. Powell: No I think Cole sounds quite a bit different in that state. More the Ce Lo Cole. I’ve driven, ridden and walked by the Golden Road many times but never stopped in; it’s quite a nice place. Of course, much of that had to with the lively discussion with my fellow Juicers.
TheMightyTrowel
Come on Debbie(Aussie) we can have a 2 person meet up in Sydney sometime… or maybe Newcastle. You’re somewhere in the middle of nowhere in Qld, right?
There’s at least one more aussie around these parts – VivaBrisVegas, I’m looking at/for you….
BillinGlendaleCA
@TheMightyTrowel: We were talking about international juicers. Of course there’s Amir in Malaysia, and we thought of you and Debbie(Aussie) in Aus. Forgot about VivaBrisVegas. I think the reason the subject came up is the late night comments, ya know like now :).
dance around in your bones
@Mnemosyne: Let’s stay in touch about that. I always love looking at/feeling yarn – always wanted to have a yarn shop of my own, just so I could fondle the yarn and arrange the colors :)
I used to have a whole room dedicated to my yarn, strung all around the walls on threads and piled in baskets. Made me very happy :)
Mnemosyne
@dance around in your bones:
I told G that the two of us might have a yarn shop date and he said, “I’m not sure I’m comfortable with you dating again.” ;-) He is a very silly boy sometimes.
Yatsuno
@TheMightyTrowel: If you remember TattooSydney, he does still lurk about. He’d be pleased to join you folk I’m certain.
dance around in your bones
@Mnemosyne: Well, you never know what might happen from fondling yarn. G might have good reason to be concerned.
Large sums of money could be dropped down the yarn vortex. (Prolly not by me, unless I win the lottery between now and then).
Amir Khalid
@BillinGlendaleCA:
It’s nice to know I managed to be there, even if only by being mentioned. I usually read of BJ meetups with a wistful sigh.
Debbie(aussie)
@TheMightyTrowel:
Ipswich :)
Debbie(aussie)
@Amir Khalid:
Agreed
BillinGlendaleCA
@dance around in your bones: Fondling yarn? Kinda sounds a tad bit kinky. Then again I like the Kinks, so carry on.
@Amir Khalid: A bit more of difficult a journey for you than me, I walked there. While I wasn’t sure that I would attend a meetup, once they said it would be 5 blocks away, it’d be rude not to attend. It does seem that 2 Juicers probably live in my area. Fortunately, I was mostly obscured in the photo by PSIFighter probably saving the camera lens and circuitry.
TheMightyTrowel
@Debbie(aussie): Thirded!
Still getting my head around the geography of this country – looks like Coffs Harbour is the halfway point – more or less.
Could be fun someday. Think I’ll be there in Dec for a conference….
If I ever have a reason to be in Brisbane, however, I will put the word out just in case.
Debbie(aussie)
@TheMightyTrowel:
I think you are right about Coffs. Can’t afford to travel much, but you never know, I’ll let you know if I’m down your way.
Just One More Canuck
@Thor Heyerdahl: I’m a little late to this thread but I’d be up for it
Something fabulous
So fun y’all. Nice place, nice folks! Glad I busted out of my lutkitude for it. Thanks for thinking of the green balloons! I brought my Tunch obey mug as id; glad it wasn’t needed! :)
gogol's wife
This cracks me up so much. Whenever there’s a picture of BJ people, they look just like the people I hang around with in real life.
MomSense
@dance around in your bones:
The yarn vortex!! I have been sucked into that vortex many times. I just decided to use my stash and it could make my LYS very, very sad.
Mnemosyne
@MomSense:
Don’t worry too much about your LYS — every time I decide to only knit from my stash, it turns out that there’s a few additional skeins I need for the project because the colors I have don’t quite work together or I decide I want a different edging or something.
I’m working on a version of this right now in cream and brown stripes with a green edging. I had to buy the brown because the green and blue I had didn’t work well together.
brendancalling
Man, I cannot WAIT to get back out to Los Angeles. What a great city.
dance around in your bones
@Mnemosyne:
I have a very tiny (w/duplicates, because I don’t really know how to use flickr) photostream under the name dance around in yer bones with a bit of my knitting and needlepoint.
As you can (maybe) see, multi-color is kinda my thing. So I can almost always find a color that works, in my stash. Plus I don’t knit from patterns, I use charts from books like Alice Starmore’s ‘Graphs for Colour Knitting” and “Fancy Feet” which are Turkish sock patterns….I mix and match.
Elizabeth Zimmerman taught me how to make my own sweater patterns and circular knit and even knit from the top down in one piece. I was quite the fanatic for some number of years. I mentioned before Kaffe Fassett being my knitting in color breakthrough – what a guy!

Wait, there was an L.A. meetup? Ah darn, I missed it. Ah well, maybe next time.
Batocchio
D’oh! Missed it. Haven’t had much time to read blogs this month. Glad y’all had a good time!
(That said, there are some chapters of Drinking Liberally out here in L.A. I don’t know how many BJ regulars hit those already.)
EL
How did I misread the original post? I thought it was Sunday evening (facepalm ) so when is the next one?
