The Good Wife is a really solid show.
*** Update ***
Forgot my earworms for the day. Woke up to this and it had me until about 7pm:
Her voice just captures me, and she is pretty ok looking, as well. For some reason or another, this is the tune that got stuck in my head during the dinner hours:
Why Delbert McClinton is not a world renowned artist is up there in my mind with how Goodfellas lost to Dances with Jesus Christ Is This Movie Still Going On At Least His Accent is Better Than It Was In Thirteen Days Fuck Me Running There is Still An Hour And a Half to Go Wolves.

Yes it is.
I have never understood the Peter hate. Will just always seemed to be the flip side of Peter-never saw him as better than Peter.

Have you tried:

@rikyrah: I have a question about Sleepy Hollow. Why don’t they get Crane some modern clothing?

Network TV is fucking old hat. It’s going to be dead within the next decade unless they decide to change things up.
My comments on network TV:
1) If Zooey Deschanel showed as much range in her movies as she does on ‘New Girl’, maybe she wouldn’t be stuck doing TV.
2) ‘Revolution’ is just the latest example of a JJ Abrams-backed show blundering around on the edges of sci-fi without being able to maintain an audience. The last example were the last couple seasons of ‘Lost’.
3) NBC sucks to high heaven. They thought bringing back the 1990s was the way to reviving their Thursday night comedy block? Hopefully Parks & Rec can outlast all the other garbage they put there.
4) I despise CBS for being #1 in network TV ratings, on the strength of convincing everyone that America is a MF’ing dangerous place to live, where serious criminals can roam around Hawaii and Las Vegas every week without it being front-page news in America. And for inflicting the fucked-up shit that is ‘Criminal Minds’ on anyone else.

PBS is retreading* Downton, season 2, which I find lame but I also have Netflix, which a sizeable chunk of the demographic doesn’t, I guess.
The new Masterpiece Selfridge-Downton mashup, aka Paradise, is watchable but, really, the market demand for totebaggers to see I’m-forgetting-I’m-American series TV seems limitless.
*ETA: does anyone not a trucker even remember retread tires? I probably changed my college GF’s car tires 4 or 5 times cause her dad bought retreads back in ’86.

Love Good Wife and I love the struggles between Peter and Alicia – probably the most adult relationship on network tv ever. And their sex in the bathroom scenes…steamy.
@Omnes Omnibus: Well first of all he looks so hot in his ‘dead’ clothes they shouldn’t rush it. but secondly, I think they’ve been too busy to go clothes shopping. ;-)
And now I fear between those two comments I have revealed too much.

Coming up for air after much football, even more yardwork, and not nearly enough beer (how the hell did THAT happen?); can anyone give me the short version of where we are at with the DL and the CR? Last I heard, Paul Ryan was going to punch someone out with his P90X body, Lindsey Graham was throwing a hissy fit, McCain was going maverick on a bunch of Republicans, and Palin … well, who the fuck cares what she says or does. So, do we have a clue what’s on the table, who has the action, if this will finally cost Boehner his job from the Republican Moderates instead of the Tea Party? That would be sweet justice.
ETA: Also, fuck baseball (spoken by a Dodgers fan that is bummed, though not shocked, they’ve scored in 1 of 22 innings, utterly wasting two brilliant pitching performances)

My mom and I saw “Gravity” tonight. I liked it a lot more than she did, but she likes her movies more action-packed than I do.

I saw Delbert McClinton in Austin somewhere around 20 years ago at a benefit for a flood or something-or-other. I wish I could remember the venue (Red or Rui something I think), but it was a terrific show, even though I was in excruciating pain after spending 8 hours on the Guadalupe River with no sunscreen on one of my hands.
Comrade Mary
John, have you heard Debbie’s cover of this song? Oh man, permanent earworm for me.
divF
@the Conster:
Sorry, I’m an Oakland fan and can’t stomach postseason baseball any longer. Here are the stats. ALCS participants, and their opponents in the division series, along with their opening day payrolls:
Boston ($159M) beat Tampa Bay ($57M)
Detroit ($149M) beat Oakland ($69M)
LA Dodgers ($218M) beat Atlanta ($89M).
St. Louis ($116M) beat Pittsburgh ($66M)
While money doesn’t guarantee winning, large payroll differentials almost always tell the story in the post-season, certainly in the first round. Baseball needs to get its act together and introduces *real* revenue sharing, rather than gimmicks (e.g. two wild card teams).
burnspbesq
@Just Some Fuckhead:
Delbert McClinton’s been making the same record over and over again for 40 years. Fortunately, it’s a damn fine record.
PsiFighter37
My earworm for the day. Please don’t blame me if you decide to rage too hard after you pick up the beat.
divF
@divF:
Correction: LCS, not ALCS.
MikeJ
@divF: The Red Sox were a massive money maker and perennial loser until they got an owner that would spend the profits on good players. Neither Tampa, Oakland, Pittsburgh, nor Atlanta are losing money. The profits are going to the owners instead of the producers of wealth, the players.
The Dangerman
@divF:
A healthy part of that $218 is a bunch of shit contracts dumped on the Dodgers by the Red Sox.
BTW, those numbers will get worse; the Dodgers have to sign Kershaw long term and his contract numbers will be stunning.
billgerat
@RaflW: I used to work at a tire business that made retreads. Retreads are made by grinding off the old tread, putting glue on the tire, re-wrapping new rubber over the tire, and placing the tire into a hot mold to put on a new tread. If done properly, a retread tire will not separate. When a retread separates, 90% of the time it is because the glue job was bungled.
TG Chicago
Digby linked to this interview:
While we can all agree that the GOP have fucked the chicken quite thoroughly in this debacle, I think there’s something to what Needham says here. We are talking about spending caps and such rather than immigration or gun control or stimulus, etc.
This is one thing the right always seems to do well, even as they do so many other things so badly. They keep the conversation on their terms — “on their side of the football field”. Sure, this is a case where they’re fumbling it and letting the Democrats run it back for a touchdown, but the left needs to figure out a way to keep the conversation on our terms.
Any ideas on how to do that? I think the best idea is to always frame issues in terms of moral certainty. We are doing the morally right and good things. Never hedge and weasel on this. I’m not saying we can never compromise, but we must always push our ideas as the good and fair and moral ones.
It helps that, in fact, they are.

That and San Diego are the deadest parks for offense in the majors; I’ve heard of players in SD that crush the ball, go into the HR trot, and end up on second when the ball shorthops the wall. A team builds for Safeco (or Petco) and then goes on the road and gets their asses kicked.

@MikeJ:
Boston’s baseball revenue ($336M) was almost double that of Oakland’s ($173M) in 2012, according to Forbes. I’ll grant you, the difference between the revenue and player costs are not as different. But not all of that can go to players, as there are other fixed costs to running a baseball team (venue, travel,…). Just saying “spend more money, like we do” is not going to get us or the other small-market teams anywhere near parity. The bottom line is that, if you eliminate the teams with income streams that guarantee they will never make it to the World Series, you end up with no more than a dozen teams. That doesn’t make for a very fan-friendly sport, something football and basketball realized a while ago.

@Hill Dweller: I agree that there’s a lot of rationalization coming from the guy. But really: what did Democrats gain out of all this? Best case scenario (short term) is that we avert a catastrophe and lock in sequestration-level spending. That’s not a huge win in my book.
Now if the unpopularity of the GOP lasts until Nov 2014, then okay: that will be potentially lead to a huge win. But I fear that a lot of this will be forgotten by then.

@taylormattd: No. I was just h/ting Digby. She went in a different direction with it. I’d go back and find the link, but my point wasn’t to either amplify or refute anything she said about it. taylormattd
@Yatsuno: That sounds kind of fantastic.

@TG Chicago: You can’t do that because you do not own the media. He who controls the media controls the narrative and the agenda. And the rich corporations who own the media care only about tax cuts for the rich. They do not care about gun safety, or immigration reform, or health care, or women’s rights, or anything other than their own profits. So the media will ALWAYS turn the narrative towards their interests.
Hill Dweller
@TG Chicago: All the recent reporting has Dems trying to eliminate the sequester either with the temporary funding bill or the one negotiated early next year.
Nevertheless, I’m still not sure what you’re trying to argue. Republicans have shit the bed, and are in a weaker position. That is a good thing for Dems going forward.
TG Chicago
@fuckwit: Valid point, but that sounds like you’re giving up. I think Democratic officials can do a better job of making a morally certain case for liberal policies. And if they do, the press will cover it, at least to some extent.

Yeah, that one sucked; odd thing, Moore took a lot of shit, but the pitcher preceding him, Gary Lucas, came in and drilled the Bosox player (Gedman, IIRC) with one pitch (also if IIRC), setting up the disaster. Lucas, an otherwise serviceable to decent reliever, was more to blame than Moore.

@Hill Dweller:
I’m less concerned about what’s good for Democratic politicians than I am about advancing liberal policies. If they manage to get spending levels back up to pre-sequestration, then it truly is a good thing that we’ve gained back the ground we lost.
But there’s still a lot of talk about cutting “entitlements” at a time when we should be talking about increasing Social Security benefits. There is a strong, moral case to be made there, but hardly anybody is making it. Instead, we’re talking about whether benefits should be cut or not. That’s a clear example of “playing on the Republicans’ side of the football field”.
Too often, Democratic officials seem to act like the 50 yard line is the end zone.

@TG Chicago: since when? The MSM doesn’t even call out the blatant misrepresentations that the GOP make over the ACA, how many of them faithfully reported the nothingburger scandals over the summer, Benghazi, IRS, AP, etc etc etc. I’d love for there to be more liberal policies but hell we couldn’t get single payer thru with 60 Dem senators and a house majority because the votes weren’t there. We don’t need more liberal policies, we need more liberal politicians, then the policies will inevitably follow, now we’re just trying to keep these asshats from fucking over the country, if not the world economic system as we know it.

@TG Chicago: No, it’s not giving up. It’s redirecting the effort to where it should be. Any liberals that spend time whining about how the Democrats should be coming up with better messaging slogans, or “moving the overton window” or whatever crap passes for insight on the left blogs these days, is wasting her time. If all D-Congresspeople started talking exclusively about progressive policies it would do *literally nothing* to stop the media from repeating verbatim whatever lies Ted Cruz spews.
The effort should be mau-mauing talking heads, radio hosts, newspaper columnists, local reporters, local paper editors, etc., into not being republican stenographers. It took the wingnuts 40+ years to arrive at a point where the media is comprised of the following: one part wingnuts, one part corporate republican, and one part frighten-of-being-seen-as-liberal. This isn’t something that will change quickly.

Looking at some of the pictures trending for the 1 Million (not really) Vet March. Looking at some of the pics, the cleanup is going to be fun and some of that property was damaged. I’m all for people protesting no matter what their stance is, but don’t scream about tyranny and lie about police brutality when the group that acted recklessly wasn’t really touched.
Also, is the term “barrycades” intently offensive or could the protestors on Twitter just not spell “barricades” correctly?

Ladies and gentlemen, Exhibit A of why liberal policies have been on the losing side for over 30 years. If you don’t care enough about politics to find out how to actually get your policies enacted, you will constantly be shocked and surprised that your opponents out-politick you and get their own policies in place.
You can’t get your policies enacted without legislators and executives (governors and presidents) to DO THE ACTUAL ENACTING. Saying that you don’t care who gets elected is saying you don’t care enough about your precious policies to actually DO anything about it. You’re the guy who says he would love to have kids but refuses to get into a relationship because it would ruin his vision of what his kids MIGHT be like.
gwangung
@divF:
You have it backwards. The free agents usually get signed AFTER their prime years. The sweet spot are players in their late arbitration years and early free agent years (which smart GMs can buy out at a decent price), because those are the years that are low cost and their peak performance.
fuckwit
@Hill Dweller: Not at all. Fuck the media. I haven’t had a TV in 20 years now. More people need to blow up their televisions. That shit is toxic. I don’t read corporate media unless it’s linked from progressive blogs– and often only to mock it.
What happened in the death throes of the old Communist states is that the media was so full of lies and propaganda that nobody believed it anymore. More people need to come to that realization on a more widespread basis here.
A friend’s wife grew up in Bulgaria. The media had such a lack of credibility, that when they reported the news of the 1989 San Francisco earthquake, she and her friends didn’t believe it, they said “it is all just lies, just anti-west propaganda”. They literally didn’t believe the earthquake happened, they believed that their media just made up the whole story to make the west look unappealing. The media has already reached that level of irrelevance and they earned every bit of it. Fuck the media. Why anyone would sit down and watch Peggy Noonan or read Thomas Friedman or whomever idiots are on there, or listen to NPR, is beyond my comprehension.
I mean, people here love to bitch about it, but why even bother reading/watching it in the first place?
It’s all lies. Lies, every single little bit of it. It’s just lies. Fuck it all.
Jello Biafra said, “don’t complain about the media, become the media”. I think that’s the answer really. The whole edifice needs to come crashing down.
For-profit medical insurance is idiotic, and we’re starting to rein that in now, but ultimately it needs to be replaced, probably within a few generations, with proper single-payer public medical care. One step at a time.
For-profit “news” is similarly idiotic. Maybe we can hasten its demise by simply not watching it anymore. Or maybe re-regulate it, or otherwise take away its profit motive. Then we can replace it with something better, there are lots of options we haven’t even begun to be creative about yet.
Fucking Joe Scarborough makes $100k A WEEK. A WEEK. Every week, he makes $100K. Every fucking week. How the fuck is that even sensible?
I’ve had it with the Rethugs, and the corporate media, and corporations, and corporate 1% crony capitalism, and the utterly ridiculous inequities and misplaced priorities of our economic system gone wild.
The more I think about this shit, the more radical I become. I’m all for a long-term plan, within 25 years, to shrink corporations down to the point where we can drown them in a bathtub.
