Wow –> This Rumsfeld stmt to NBC on Bush 41: “Bush 41 is getting up in years and misjudges Bush 43, who I found made his own decisions"
— Mark Murray (@mmurraypolitics) November 5, 2015
@mmurraypolitics and Don Rumsfeld is 83; just a Spring Chicken and Hawk!
— Fred B. (@ebayjick) November 5, 2015
A Democrat once said “Victory has a thousand fathers, but defeat is an orphan.” Repubs prefer to think of defeat as a bastard child, and the Bush Crime Cartel is busily Jerry-Springer-ing its paternity.
Mr. Pierce explains:
It seems that Poppy Bush sat down with Parson Meacham to hash out Poppy’s life. And who could be a better wingman for the job than the Parson, who’s made a lucrative business out of the Great Man Theory of American history? In the course of their discussions—which, alas, have led to a book-like object—the elder Bush has some harsh words for a certain former secretary of defense of his casual acquaintance.
“I think he served the president badly,” Bush told Meacham, Peter Baker of the New York Times reported, quoting the book. He added: “I’ve never been that close to him anyway. … There’s a lack of humility, a lack of seeing what the other guy thinks. He’s more kick ass and take names, take numbers. I think he paid a price for that.” (Rumsfeld resigned as secretary of defense in 2006 after conditions in Iraq deteriorated. He declined comment about the biography to Fox News…
.@mmurraypolitics Didn't Jeb just say the other day he'd kill for his father?
Better watch out Rumsie!

George HW Bush v Rumsfeld animosity stretches back decades. Bush thought Rumsfeld had him appointed CIA Dir to sideline him politically
— Stephen Hayes (@stephenfhayes) November 5, 2015
But then again…
… Poppy ripped Donald Rumsfeld unconditionally, and he said some tough things about Cheney, too, but he also made sure to point out that C-Plus Augustus ran his own shop. Jeb (!) made the same point about who was in charge, and went out of his way to say nice things about Cheney besides…
Why, a political cynic might almost suspect that Darth Cheney had squirreled away some “oppo research” in that man-sized safe he had removed from the Naval Observatory on his way out the door in 2009! Yet however could a man who’d gotten his start in national politics as a CREEPster in Richard Nixon’s administration ever stoop to such low, ungentlemanly tactics?

Sick of Republican threads. I really am.

@Elizabelle: Only a year to go.

So I see a Cole tweet that he’s not wearing any clothes. Maybe this would account for his illness.

@Elizabelle: I’m feeling the same way, myself. Especially after the big pile of Bernie awesome in the MSNBC forum tonight. Basically if the categories start with “in Assholes…” I start to check out.

Site is completely borked for me on the iPad, so I’m going to watch “And Then There Were None” on TCM instead. Who knew Walter Huston and Barry Fitzgerald were in a movie directed by Rene Clair?
Schlemazel
@BillinGlendaleCA:
You’re a hell of an optimist! I assume they will be around for years yet & acting as badly as always so we have a never-ending string of Republicans threads. Laugh, shake our heads, cry, scream in anger, all in their turn but not ending any time soon sadly.

Speaking of aging white men talking smack, this clip shows Bill O’Reilly losing his shit while interviewing George Will because Will had trashed his Killing Reagan book.

@Elizabelle: I think of it as a touring circus– tent show plus sideshow– where the acrobats (and the audience) don’t believe in gravity. What you get is “Adventures in cognitive dissonance.”
And ignoring it all is a great temptation, but would be a mistake. These people could easily end up running the Federal Government.

@Mnemosyne (iPhone): If you have Netflix, Desk Set is there now. Written by the Ephron parents of Nora and Delia. (Just the movie, not the orig play.) I looked up the director, Walter Lang, and he started out in silents, eventually did The King and I, and maybe ended up with Snow White and the Three Stooges. (Also Cheaper by the Dozen and State Fair.)

Is there a magical way to edit ?

Jebbie urged Poppy in 1992 to drop Quayle as VP in favor of Rumsie?
Isn’t that revelation jeopardizing one of Jebbie’s most precious endorsement in the 2016 primary?

I saw several ¿Jeb? ads this evening when flipping through tv. I understand the placement on Blue Bloods, 20/20 and Dateline — old people watch those. But not Grimm. Not Hawaii 5-0 (reboot).
Also, Mr. Not-Bush, your ads are not going to attract anyone. They’re boring. Nobody in New Hamster gives a fuck about what you did in Florida. They want to know how they can stop being a contributor state and start getting money out of the Feds like Alabama does.
And I swear to dog, the cheapest ad buy in town will be whatever PAC starts buying evening news time with “JEB wants to interfere in your family — ask about Terry SCHAIVO.” Americans for Privacy Rights paid for this message.
And has RtR found a new proxy/nym yet?
FlyingToaster
@efgoldman: This is Tommy’s night job, so the answer is almost certainly “yeah, I got tired of the endless bitching, so it’s gone. Sucks to be you.”
Aleta
@efgoldman:
“html formatting works (obviously)”
I don’t understand what that means.
And, why is is “hit or miss whether the comment opens in the edit window” ?
Thanks for the clues, though. For a time, it did open in an edit window and the clock would count down, but still no edit was possible.
This was happening for me some weeks before the Great Upgradheaval.
Aleta
@efgoldman:
Really — someone gave me that book (In the Heart of the Sea, about the whaler Essex).
Aleta
@efgoldman:
Yeah, I remember that. But it stopped showing up for me, and before it disappeared, the countdown went on but editing didn’t work. And before that, it worked like you said. (Mac OS X 10.6.8, Safari). Same thing happens on the ipad.
benw
@efgoldman: I pretty much love everything Moby Dick, but In the Heart of the Sea sounds like a straightforward dramatization of the sinking of the Essex, which doesn’t have a lot to do with the themes of Melville’s novel.
Gin & Tonic
@benw: It’s the prequel.
Omnes Omnibus
@benw: The Essex story was Melville’s inspiration for the novel, but you’re right that it really has nothing to do with “Moby Dick.”
benw
@Gin & Tonic: Lucas has forever sullied the word prequel!

@benw: There was a kickstarter for a Moby Dick card game. The illustrations on the cards are interesting and the makers were sincerely obsessed. Literature majors you know. I ordered one but never played it.
After the Essex sank (rammed by a whale), it would have been logical for the men to head for the nearest islands in their lifeboats. But they decided not to, for fear of cannibals. (Mistaken.). Unfortunately they then had to eat each other on the way home.

Anyway — benw, the LA Opera is currently putting on a production of “Moby-Dick.” There’s a link to it in one of my moderated comments.

Facebook is dead tonight, too. People may actually be interacting with others in meatspace, as strange as that seems.
Also, my links came out of moderation above. Wheel of Freestyle!
Pie Happens (opiejeanne)
@BillinGlendaleCA: Me too, although these days it’s pretty watered down from what it was in 1980, what with the earthquake causing them to close off some of the cooler areas of the tour. Some of the history seems to have changed a bit, too, but that’s a pretty good idea. If the weather was better we could take her on the “dark” version of the tour, the one after dark that visits some of the shadier stories and shadier parts of town.
Pie Happens (opiejeanne)
@Mnemosyne (tablet): my Facebook has been dead for a couple of days now. It’s strange.
