This was Steve Bannon, Steven Miller, and the other Breitbrats now burrowing into the Trump administration like maggots into a dying animal. Sure, it was a little reward for their neo-Nazi defenders. But more importantly, it was a test for us “normies”: Would the lamestream media, and its low-info readers, pick up on the change in tone?
Even with all the other deliberate and incidental misfeasance this weekend, it was noticed:

Well, looks like Sheldon Adelson and Bibi Netanyahu really backed a winner for Israel this time. And now we see just what the GOP’s shrieks of Israel Is Too Our Special Friend were worth.
jl
As far as I can tell, the ‘explanation’ was, essentially, that we forgot and disrespected all the other victims of the Holocaust so we could spite the Jews.
These jerks really like to shove it in peoples’ faces, and in a way that cannot be ignored.
What they are doing is open provocation of every decent person in this country. They think they can win that fight?
Hope they get the payback they deserve.
If this keeps up, Trump will either be removed from office, or powers so hemmed by a panicked Congress that he’ll be a symbolic asshole prisoner in the WH. I hope one of those happens before he starts lowing shit up and killing people.
? Martin
@Morzer: You assume they aren’t rooting for a religious war.
jl
@? Martin: With the US govt in chaos, they think that is a good idea? Man, if I were running any country that was a US ally, I would be running my staff to exhaustion with contingency plans that did not rely on us.
SWMBO
@? Martin: Sort of like Bibi “let’s you and him fight” kind of thing?
EBT
@? Martin: It’s easy to find video of Bannon expressly calling for a Christian Militia.
jl
@SWMBO: The hyperpower muscle needed for a big fight is being run by a toxic asshole and complete moron who can’t even get the authoritarian basics right for his domestic support and is actively pissing off his military.
? Martin
@jl: If they feel that Islam represents an existential threat to Israel as things currently stand, then an opportunity to drag the US into the mix, even if that moves the inevitable (from their point of view) forward benefits them greatly.
Sure, it’s sheer madness from our perspective, yet the settlement expansion is ongoing. They’ve got an ally in the WH (Bannon) and a rube with the biscuit in his pocket.
RobertDSC-Mac Mini
@EBT:
Ralph Peters wrote a fictional book about that kind of thing, entitled The War After Armageddon. I liked it, but I like most of his military fiction anyway. The War in 2020 really stuck with me for a long time.
Morzer
@? Martin:
If you were Israel, would you really like to go all in on such a war controlled by a Nazi cabal? Doesn’t seem like the smart play to me, since the obvious next step towards Bannon’s end-game is an aggressive, white Christian nation purged of all sorts of undesirables.
patroclus
@? Martin: How does deliberately omitting mentioning Jews as victims of the Holocaust show that Israeli Jews have an ally in the WH?
EBT
@patroclus: Well Bibi is clinging desperately because he is about to go to down himself.
Morzer
@patroclus:
Because Clinton would have… umm… Benghazi!!!
jl
@EBT: That is the only explanation I can think of. What idiot would try to wade into a long war with the US as a supposed ally now? Netanyahu must be in Nixon ’74 level trouble and just saying shit to try to make it through the night.
Morzer
@jl:
Netanyahu has always been a short-term tactics for survival and profit above strategy kind of guy. Terrible for Israel’s long-term interests, but adept at conning his own people into taking him as their savior. Which, come to think of it, sounds oddly familiar…
EBT
@jl: It came out that he was shitting in Sheldon Adelson’s cheerios. Was going to help pass a law to make free daily newspapers illegal, which is the thing that Adelson prints. Doing this for the benefit of one of Adelson’s competitors too.
jl
@EBT: Yes, that is what I was referring to. I think I read that they have some interesting bits of the negotiations on tape, but not sure I remember correctly. Maybe some witnesses who are spilling?
Morzer
@EBT:
There’s yet another corruption case against Netanyahu (and the one against his wife is ongoing, very slowly). Whether he’s rigged things so as to be immune, I don’t know, but anyone who thinks Bibi is anything but a fraudulent source of miseries and disasters is a fool and deserves to suffer the consequences.
? Martin
@Morzer @patroclus: : We chose Stalin as an ally, remember, and Japan chose Germany as an ally. Israel is in a tough spot. If they think this is an existential threat, they have no choice but to do something about it. They can’t go it alone, but if the US can be convinced to go along, they can deal with the Christian/Jew conflict another day, just as we pushed off the communist conflict until after the fascist threat was eliminated, and Japan pushed off the aryan conflict.
Morzer
@? Martin:
They could have done the sensible thing and not meddled in the politics of the US, while recognizing that Obama’s policies made Israel safer for the long term. But, of course, that would have meant Bibi behaving like a mentally competent adult and not stirring nonsense up just to cover his worthless ass.
jl
@? Martin:
We used Stalin as an ally, I think is more accurate.
Edit: Point being, we knew Stalin and USSR had to stay in the fight, and we could use them to the extent that was possible as an ally. The US is an unreliable ally now, because Trump is so dysfunctional and we cannot be relied to stay in any fight, or even if we do, conduct it competently. And this is regardless of whether Trump is in charge or the US is occupied with trying to control the disasters he will create. No one sane should rely on us right now for shit. So, I figure Netanyaho is just saying shit.
EBT
@jl: Did Stalin really need us? He seemed fine winning 10:1 casualty losses and could have sustained much worse.
jl
@EBT: I think reinforces my point. So, I won;’t argue. It wasn’t a cheerful alliance from either side.
patroclus
@? Martin: We were forced by Hitler’s invasion of the USSR to ally with Stalin, who provided the bulk of the fighting against Germany. And the Soviets, at the time, were not singling out Jews for persecution the way the Nazis were. It would seem that the Israelis would not think highly of deliberately omitting mention of the Holocaust against Jews, given that the Holocaust against Jews is what led to Israel’s founding. Omitting Jews in a Holocaust remembrance is not the sort of thing that leads one to conclude that Trump (or Bannon) are “allies.”

Just to wrap up from below. What I’m getting at is what can make protests the most effective for achieving its goals. This article had an interesting view of the Tea Party and Occupy movements.
As for this issue – the palace intrigue in this administration is going to seem like something out of the House of Cards or the Game of Thrones. There seem to be a lot of competing agendas and alliances of convenience and it is hard to believe that there won’t be some casualties along the way.
Schlemazel
In a bit of bitter irony, today is Fred Korematsu’s birthday. He was convicted of defying the executive order to report for internment camp. 30 years later the conviction was overturned. Not because it was stupid and counter-productive but because the government withheld evidence that the EO was stupid and counter-productive.
? Martin
@patroclus: So long as they are willing to write Israel a blank military check, they could care fuck-all about who we’d prefer to have over for dinner. Cole keeps telling us the key to the GOP holding these competing interests together is a common hatred of democrats. Islam is the same galvanizing force between Christians and Jews (perhaps necessarily so).
Schlemazel
@EBT:
Yes, Stalin needed the material we could supply that his damaged industrial disaster could not. We gave them tools and let them throw bodies t the Germans. Without Archangel Germany might have gotten a large chunk of the USSR and obtained a truce.

The last few days have proven beyond a doubt that Steve Bannon is running the country while fluffing Trump with idiotic EO’s and focusing him on vote counts and public appearances.
Bannon seems to be the only person in charge in Washington anymore.

Nobody seems to really get it yet. They yell its not normal, but think the rules of civilization still apply.
They’re playing chess, the enemy is playing civil war.
All the Traitor Trump needs is enough armed and ruthless people in DC to threaten Congress and their families with torture and death and he can get all the laws he wants passed. And if his minions get in legal trouble? He pardons them with the stroke of the pen.
The Old Republic is dead. The Empire has taken over. And until the Emperor and his followers are given the reward that traitors deserve, its only going to get worse. Mark my words.
Keith P.
I kind of feel for Ted Cruz. He would have run a conservative’s dream 100 days (Erick Erickson is gushing over a lot of Trump’s actions, and I think a lot of others are as well), similar to Trump except he likely would have run his ship pretty well. He ran a really good campaign org but just got steamrolled by Trumpism. All those Senators who hated him would have fallen in line ala #NeverTrump, but he wouldn’t be having these fuckups that Trump is, so he wouldn’t be in danger of having a 2 week honeymoon where he suddenly loses a guaranteed majority. If Trump flames out, Cruz would go down in history as a bullet dodged. He could have been a scary-effective hard-right President.

Prediction: Eventually, Trump will insult every person on Earth either individually or as members of a group and either intentionally or inadvertently because he’s an ignoramus.
Isn’t Trump supposed to be the best friend that Israel has ever had and ever could have? Is Trump aware that a bunch of Jews live in Israel? Is he aware how they feel about the Holocaust? Does he know anything at all?
@Keith P.:
That seems like close to the most misplaced concern imaginable.
Patricia Kayden
@lumpkin: Lol!! Cruz has fallen in line with Trump despite Trump insulting his father and wife and repeatedly calling him “Lyin’ Ted”. No sympathy. He’s odious.

If you follow the the link to the Daily Stormer in Chemi Shalev’s tweet you can see a good example of how the alt-right antisemites noticed and appreciated the dog whistle of omitting specific reference to the Jewish people from the proclamation. It also provides a refresher course on how those people think. Don’t skip the comments.

Of course on 9/11 they will omit mention of Americans. Because others were killed too.

Israel and the international Jewish community are two different things. While we in group 2 generally are socially liberal and tolerant, group 1 moves like the US and Britain on terrible Murdoch pushed right wing trajectories. I don’t think Netanyahu gives a fuck about me or my family, and I lost ancestors in the holocaust.

@lumpkin:
One of the real dangers of electing a completely incompetent president is that he or she will ultimately have to rely on someone to run the show. In the case of Trump, we have a person who is singularly incapable of making responsible and rational choices about personnel. His cabinet is a long list of embarrassing choices. If Bannon is indeed the person Trump has come to rely on to be his fill-in president we are in real trouble. After Trump chose Pence, it seemed like Pence would be an obvious choice for the cretin to lean on. However, for some reason, it seems like Bannon has a special hold over Trump. Does Bannon have something on Trump he can use to manipulate him? Do we have a figurehead president who is being blackmailed by both Putin and Bannon? Why is real life more fantastic than fiction?

All he needs now is funding to pay his brownshirts. If the GOP in Congress doesn’t give him what he wants, he can steal it with his new Treasury appointment. Because what would stop him? Rules and laws? He’s the God-Emperor reborn in his mind and does not care about laws, rules or civilization. What’s a little abduction, grand larceny, torture and murder when he’s already committed himself to high treason and neo-facism?
Its not like he can be executed more then once.

@TriassicSands: Pence is the guy who takes over if Trump gets so bad they impeach. I’m reasonably sure Trump won’t rely on the guy who might replace him, too dangerous and Trump probably sees it as demeaning. Plus he and Bannon share a philosophy and suspect Bannon kisses ass really well.
It’s no surprise that All Live Matter eventually start ignoring any life that isn’t white and male. The Jews who voted for Trump should have realized this. Instead they thought they were part of the All Lives and forgot that they get pushed out of the group as soon as the group can.
CarolDuhart2
He starts making threats like that to Congress, the 25th Amendment comes into play immediately. Impeachment and removal are absolute actions with no possible reversal.
And just where are they to do this? It’s clear he has no deep well of support. More it was hatred of HIllary and a longing to outlaw abortion. Will those people risk jail to do things like this for him if they won’t even attend his inauguration or do counter protests? And it’s clear Trump is both insane and has no concept of reciprocal loyalty whatsoever and is too mercurial to rely on in a pinch, like having to go to court for threatening a Federal official.
gratutious
I saw a transcript of Reince Priebus and Chuck Todd interrupting each other. Todd was actually holding his own for a change, and Priebus was tap-dancing as fast as he could, even going to far as to mutter something about “never forget.” At that point, I would have dope-slapped Priebus and screamed into his face, “YOU JUST FORGOT, YOU IDIOT, THAT’S WHAT WE’RE TALKING ABOUT!!!”
boatboy_srq
@rikyrah: THIS.
There are ways to bring up that LGBTs, Roma, Socialists, trade-unionists, and many others were victims of th Holocaust. tRump’s proclamation isn’t one of them.
I’m trying to decide whether the tRumpets did this to Other© Jewish victims, or whether they want to sound inclusive without actually honoring any of the other communities the Nazis culled (because their supporters think they’re equally icky).

Dr. Ronnie James, D.O.
Schlemazel mentioned today is Fred Korematsu’s birthday – here is a notable portion of Justice Murphy’s dissent in Korematsu v United States:
“I dissent, therefore, from this legalization of racism. Racial discrimination in any form and in any degree has no justifiable part whatever in our democratic way of life. It is unattractive in any setting, but it is utterly revolting among a free people who have embraced the principles set forth in the Constitution of the United States. All residents of this nation are kin in some way by blood or culture to a foreign land. Yet they are primarily and necessarily a part of the new and distinct civilization of the United States. They must, accordingly, be treated at all times as the heirs of the American experiment, and as entitled to all the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution.”
Murphy’s biography is pretty inspiring as well: DA, AUSA, Mayor of Detroit, founder of the US Conference of Mayors, Governor of Michigan during the Flint strike (he brokered the settlement which led to the founding of the UAW), Atty Gen’l, SCOTUS.

@Schlemazel: Historians will argue that one for a long, long time. The Red Army inflicted something like 85% of all the Nazi casualties; the western allies combined accounted for the other 15%.
