    I said it below but it bears repeating:Kelley will not be able to prevent Trump from seeing whoever he wants or making phone calls to putin or buckling down to work in the ivsl office. Trump can not be alone with the gaping narcissistic void at his core. If kelly needs to “approve” visitors Trump will need Kelly to suck up to him full time. Or he will flee the white house permanently.

    Michael Fullilove took the opportunity of a speech to the National Press Club in Canberra to provide a swingeing assessment of the American president’s performance, casting Trump as the “lord of misrule” presiding over a White House entourage “animated by egomania and narcissism and marked by coarseness and ill-discipline”.

    Fullilove said Trump was a radical departure from US presidents since the 1930s who had seen the advantages of global leadership. “Mr Trump presents a very different face to the international community.”

    “He is not persuaded that America does well when others do well. In fact, he seems to prefer that others do badly,” he said on Wednesday.

    “A lot of Australians will find the prospect of dealing with, working with, Mr Trump distasteful but we need to grimace and bear it”.

    “The alternative – to turn away from the United States and let Mr Trump’s instincts have full rein – would be self-defeating”.

    Fullilove said the character of the man in the White House meant the relationship could not be business as usual: “Our officials will need to apply a discount factor to what Mr Trump says.

    “They will need to work with great diligence through other parts of the US system including the congress, the agencies and the military.

    “Just because we are affirming the alliance does not mean that we should go along with Mr Trump’s every whim.

    “Rather, we should add our voices to those in Washington and other allied capitals who are counselling prudence. We should try to nudge the Trump Administration in the direction of normality.

    “We must do what we can in conjunction with our friends to stop America from going full Trump.

    “We will need to be a busy ally,” he said.

    Contra the extract, I don’t think Trump is ‘at his most unguarded’ with the chumps, sad sacks and bozos with excess funds who pay to be in his exclusive clubs. I think he says whatever comes into his head that he thinks will impress them. So, calling the WH a dump and implying that he is too good for the place fits. Even if he thinks the WH is a low class dive, I think he said it to impress his cronies.

    The link says that Trump is such a lazy slob that he drives his golf cart onto the greens and the tees. Man, his precious battery must really need conserving. I don’t like anything about golf, except the genteel atmosphere, which I think is a hoot, but that is a serious disgrace to the sport, even if it is a silly one. Silly sports need some self-respect too.

    I do like golf courses, even if I don’t like golf. When I was a boy scout, for a while we held our meetings at the club house of a broken down old public course that was closing down soon. We’d play capture the flag on the golf course. That was fun, and the night games were great. All golf courses should be put to good uses like that. Real golfers should be thankful for the fun new hazards that are created thereby.

    Watching an old Julia Child and Jacques Pepin program, and they are scrambling an ostrich egg. One egg is enough to feed six people! On the inside, it looks just like a giant chicken egg.

    @Betty Cracker: One of my favorite shows was called “Dinner for the Boss”. It was a huge beef roast and sides. She was drinking what looked like iced tea. Then she got to dessert. Chocolate Bourbon Balls. I remember her melting chocolate and butter and heavy cream in a double boiler. Then she slowly added the bourbon from the bottle. Then she topped off her glass. By the end of the show her kitchen was spinning and she had to hang on to counter to keep it still. One of my favorite shows.

    I don’t know if this is included in your reference to a “genteel atmosphere,” but professional golf probably has the highest standard of honesty of any sport. If a player accidentally steps near his (or her) ball and it moves a millimeter (and no one else sees it) the golfer will almost certainly report the infraction and take the penalty even though there was no intentional act and no advantage realized. That makes it ironic that golf is Trump’s chosen pastime. I have no doubt he cheats constantly. It’s who he is.

    There’s something else at play here. Trump loves an audience. He needs an audience. And we’ve had a few modern presidents from wealthy families whose private homes may have been superior to the White House. But they still treated the White House as a special, sacred place. The people’s house. Trump treats it as though it was a tacky acquisition, a fixer upper that might look a little better if it were painted gold.

    And he does this not just to impress the chumps, but to aggrandize himself. And he is totally unaware of the insecurity and the pettiness at the heart of his remarks.

I know that’s irrational but for some reason that’s the worst thing in my mind, for today, and I’m plenty angry about other things like the proposed investigation of Affirmative Action.

Also too, no self-respecting nation would make a dump its presidential palace.     Me too! Like, how DARE he! Tacky tacky man with awful tacky taste. But I think I’ve identified why he felt it necessary to say such a thing. (Besides him having awful gangsterish taste, I mean.) As it turns out, the Vanity Fair review of the Trump International Hotel (that’s the one on PA Ave in DC that used to be the Old Post Office, and he’s hideously proud of it) called it a ‘frightful dump’. “No dump, no dump, YOU’RE the dump!” – right? Oh, and Luxury Travel Intelligence called the decor ‘garish’ and concluded “This place is not for the true discerning luxury traveller.” Ouch.

    No wonder Trump golfs so much. It’s his comfort zone being among the “special people, his real group”. Reminded me of GW Bush joking at Al Smith Dinner in 2000. Bush said the audience was an impressive crowd, “the haves and the have-mores. Some people call you the elite. I call you my base.”
    Granted, being “humorous” at the dinner is a tradition but I remember that “joke” rubbed me the wrong way and has stuck in my mind.
    When people tell you who they are, believe them, especially Republicans.
