On an unrelated topic, Roy Moore threw gasoline on the fire and said that he did “not generally” pursue women in their teens.
Not too bright a bulb is our Roy. I hope the good folks on Twitter tear him a new one with that. “Did I murder people? Not generally, no.”

Yay! Welcome back.
Here’s a little something cheerful after the recent very serious threads.
SPOILER FREE review of “Thor Ragnarok.”
The new Thor movie is a thoroughly enjoyable hoot. It is infused throughout with the comic sensibility of director Taika Waititi, a New Zealand director of Maori and Jewish descent. And yeah you should go look up all his other films. It says much that Marvel has banked so much success from their previous films that they felt that they could let this director stretch the standard comic book formula and not fear losing fans (except for a few grinches). And they were right. This Thor is not comical in the same way as are the two Guardian films. There is something in the tone that is distinctly non-American and nonwhite. And it is not just because the director is from New Zealand or that he uses some Kiwi actors he has worked with before. It’s how he approaches the characters and the universe he has built. Waititi has said that one character is based on New Zealand bouncers, big guys who always speak softly. And his own special Aussie and Kiwi Easter eggs sprinkled throughout the movie includes a spaceship whose colors are based on an Australian aboriginal flag.
This all works because it helps make the two main worlds of the film, a gladiator planet and Thor’s home world, feel just a little more quirky, unusual and alien. And the way the humor is used makes you pay extra attention to the action and exposition, because you never know what’s coming next. By contrast, in the second Guardians movie you kinda knew when a gag was being set up and there was a predictable rhythm to how gags were played out.
There are two main storylines, and the narratives are clearly told. You always know what is at stake. And the cast is fun. Thor is back, as is Loki, Heimdall, Odin and the Hulk. New characters are engaging, especially Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, who is big fun and has a tremendous physical presence. And the chief antagonists, played by Jeff Goldblum and Cate Blanchett are great, especially because they don’t have to act underneath tons of makeup. It also helps tremendously that the main baddie is not Anonymous CGI Monster Number 4. I overheard some guys saying that they were surprised that Chris Hemsworth had such good comic timing, but they clearly had not seen his hilarious turn in the “Ghostbusters” reboot.
But Taika does not neglect the narrative demands of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). There are sly connections to earlier Thor and Avengers movies, although I think that attentive moviegoers could easily enjoy this as a standalone film. The production design and photography are vibrant and colorful and some of the costume design and creature makeup effects are clearly smart nods to Marvel Comic Artist Supreme Jack Kirby. And yeah, there is the inevitable bits that are a setup for a future Marvel movie, but this is still a coherent, unified film, and not just a part of a gigantic serialized blockbuster.
So, good action, good story, good fun.

Something stood out to me in Moore- Hannity radio interview that is being quoted. Moore says he didn’t date any teenagers without the mother’s permission. Does the fact that he didn’t say parents implies that the girls were from single homes without fathers, or was it custom to just ask mothers back in the 70’s. I think he specifically went for girls that were lacking father figures.

i happened to see this exchange on CNN between Jake Tapper and the former AL GOP chair. The guy is awful but he’s also out of his depth. You can tell he’s used to the good ol’ boy environment of Alabama where, when you say something like the Washington Post isn’t a credible news source, everyone agrees with him and talks about Jeff Bezos and George Soros. Tapper doesn’t do that and instead keeps questioning him.
Tapper also asks him what proof he needs to believe the women. The guy really doesn’t have an answer. I was glad to see a journalist press a Republican on this issue–just what exactly would be enough “proof” to make you believe these women.

@Kathleen: As a religious minority, although not a particularly devout or observant one, I try not to be too judgmental of other religions and other’s religious observance. However, we are long, long overdue for a discussion of just what is going on within evangelical churches, households, parochial schools, and among evangelical homeschoolers. The amount of crime and deviance being covered up and/or excused away under the rubric and rhetoric of religious freedom and the 1st Amendment is too large to keep ignoring in the name of respectful tolerance. If you let a proper, impartial sex crimes investigator lose on the Duggar family he or she would take decades to the bottom of the crimes they’ve committed, abetted, and/or covered up.

@Mnemosyne: An odd thing about more than one of these internet apologies is the quick praise from some. “OK nice apology, well done, he’s a good guy now” — without much attention to the acts that were actual crimes (CK, Halperin), or that harmed people with long lasting effect (Halperin, Taibbi, CK). Or influenced others to treat women very badly (Taibbi), or derailed or ruined careers (Halperin, maybe CK). Or encouraged defamation, internet attacks or industry pressure (Taibbi, CK, maybe Halperin). These effects are more personal and serious than can be answered by “i misunderstood” — “I was young and being a jerk” — “I tried to form relationships at work” — “I’m not responsible.”

When I was in USN boot camp at Great Lakes they followed the rules, even when I pushed them. I wasn’t going to Southern Baptist Holly Roller going to Hell if you don’t get saved by Jesus RIGHT NOW church services.
There wasn’t any way they could make me. It worked out OK for me, after much shouting and carrying on. I had to go Sundays to watch videos about ethics and morality, which I already had a pretty good grasp on. And some Sundays I didn’t get to go to the Recruit Recreation Center after church, ON NOES!!!
I could tell more, if anyone asks… I stood at a brace for most of the day that day, the Monday after the first “church” service in a drill building. We used it to do exercise and marching drill the other 6 days of the week. Not really a surprise as I had heard that kind of preaching on the radio as a pre-draft-age person in southern WV. Hi EFG!!
Glad to hear from you again. I’ve seen your story about being Jewish in boot camp. I wasn’t interested in professing any religion, although now a days I understand you can go with Druid or Wiccan or other New Age beliefs, which would have been much better than the Southern Baptist Holy Roller Going to Hell cult. I was exposed to Unitarian church as a teen…
I was actually dumfounded when I heard the Shouting Baptist Preacher at a government military installation. It helped me not be surprised when I learned that the Air Force Academy is suffering under the heel of such religious bigots.
A good friend who worked her way from DMV to Professor of Epidemiology to Episcopal Priest was flying on family business. She happened to be seated beside a fundamentalist preacher, and naturally they talked shop.
After a few minutes he asked her “What’s you take from collections?” Of course she barely understood the question, as Episcopal Priests are employees of the Dioscese, with pensions, health insurance, and no “take” from the collections.
She was hilarious telling us about the conversation, and how difficult it was to maintain a calm manner as she explained her work situation, as opposed to his ability to shuck his crowd out of contributions by exhorting them to contribute to his living… er, ah, to the work of the church!
