Eighteen years and counting in office as an out & proud ‘white nationalist’, and suddenly it’s a big media scandal that Steve King is a bigot.
It’d be one thing if the miserable bastid would just shut up and lie low until the Media Village Idiots got distracted by some other shiny object, but noooo, Steve’s all It’s too late for me to get an honest job, I gotta polish up my Faux News portfolio before the national shitstorm breaks!

Actually, Sen. Scott republicans like King are why your party is racist. And there are plenty more just like him. I think you’re on the wrong side of the aisle.

Shit, I’m glad people in the press are waking up about Steve King and about Republicans overall, but, jeez, what the hell took them so fucking long? This is who these people have been for 50 years now. Glad they began cluing in here, but, really, a lot of us have known this for a long fucking time.
cmorenc
Steve King plainly enjoys displaying his open racism to piss the blue part of America off. THAT is why he is so open about it – it’s a piece of perverse defiance performance art, which enough of his home Iowa voters seem willing to tacitly endorse, that he knows he can get away with it. Also, so far his GOP caucus in the House grudgingly tolerates it by not denying him his desired committee assignments, let alone making any moves to kick him out of the GOP caucus.
Martin
@cmorenc: And that’s why he’ll keep getting re-elected.

I remembered the other night that I had some $50 EE series “Patriot Bonds” from my step grandfather. They’re collectively worth $450 in value at face. Two of them, from 2005 and 2006, had interest rates of 3.20% and 3.60%.
Apparently, the US Savings Bond program is a shadow of its former self due to changes the Treasury has made over the years, such as ending paper bonds, a user-unfriendly website (TreasuryDirect) for buying electronic bonds. Congress eliminated it’s marketing budget in 2002. Low-fixed interest rates have also caused declining EE bond sales. As a result, they’re a terrible investment now and sales have been declining for years.
Is the Treasury/government intentionally trying to eliminate the savings bond program? Have they no sense of history? And what are the odds of Speaker Pelosi being convinced to revitalize the savings bond program and reversing this trend?

@??? Goku (aka Amerikan Baka) ??:
It’s my understanding that IRAs and 401(k) plans largely supplanted Savings Bonds as savings vehicles for most of the middle class, to the extent that the program was almost vestigial. People who want the security invest in all-T-bill mutual funds, and the money ends up in the Treasury, but with lower administrative costs.
Things change. IIRC, American Express no longer sells Traveler’s checks, and Western Union no longer carries telgrams, and the TELEX network is defunct.

Amen.
Kinda look at the slow realization of the essential gooper nature in much the same way I look at the slow realization of the general populace of Trump’s rampant criminality and unfitness for office, i.e. b/c Trump has the Reverse Midas Touch (everything Trump touches turns to shit), the Trump admin catalyzes and expedites and reveals everything venal and ugly and cruel that had heretofore been (poorly) hidden by their bullshit “principles”. (That no one but useful fools and calculating grifters ever gave a shit about.)
Trump rips the scab offa everything and compels people to acknowledge the pustulence underneath.
What’s especially frustrating, as it always has been, is that so many (especially the cowardly and the bought mandarins in the media industrial complex) choose to ignore what is obvious, transparent and knowable in favor of both-sidesing and what-aboutting the fuck outta ever’thing, cuz to plainly acknowledge that we are ruled by unredeemable monsters would require, you know, action on their part.
So we limp along, and Trump and Republicans continue to be propped up inna way that no Democrat would ever be (remember them halcyon days when Republicans usedta complain about Obama’s $15 cupcakes — cuz that’s the fucking best they could do?).

poleaxedbyboatwork
@Plato:
Agree with your general notion, but would just make a coupla points a distinction:
What we are presently living through (and it’s far from decided which way it’s gonna turn out) makes Nixon/Watergate and its consequent cover-up seem positively picayune by comparison.
And: The old saw “the cover-up is worse than the crime” emphatically does not apply here. (Not saying or intimating you meant this, course, just springboarding offa your point to make another.) In our era, the Trump campaign and admin crime(s) necessitate the cover-up, are in fact its life-support, because the crime(s) are so foundationally bedrock that the only thing propping up the illusion is the willful blindness of people who oughtta fucking well know better.
Will be completely unsurprised if the messy unraveling turns out to be even worse than I suspected, and I already suspect it’s purty fucking thoroughgoingly heinous.

It has long been known that Steve King is a racist POS because the press has been dutifully reporting his racist comments* ever since he first uttered one. As one of the tweets above noted, this isn’t news.
It is news that certain members of the GOP are finally condemning him for his overtly racist comments. Hence, the GOP will get another pass for being the KKK party. The media, unfortunately, focuses on the latest outrage. A republican Senator or Rep not saying overtly racist stuff is not outrageous, it’s another day ending in “y”. As long as people want to excuse the voting patterns of racists in this country (“They are voting for Republicans because they are fiscal conservatives” or “they are anti-abortion” or “they are Evangelicals”, ad nauseum), the GOP will continue to get a pass on their racist base.

@??? Goku (aka Amerikan Baka) ??: EE Bonds kick ass if (IF) you can hang on to them for 20 years after purchase. They’re guaranteed to double in value after 20 years, so a low-interest EE savings bond would get a one-time adjustment to ensure that it fulfills that guarantee.
