Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

They spent the last eight months firing professionals and replacing them with ideologues.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

The willow is too close to the house.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. keep building.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

“woke” is the new caravan.

Oppose, oppose, oppose. do not congratulate. this is not business as usual.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Late Night Horrorshow Open Thread: King of the CPAC Clown Show

The GOP has become a pyramid scheme of stupidity, and look who's at the very top. https://t.co/arZeeIIoVX

— Mig Greengard (@chessninja) March 2, 2019

After an excruciating week which even he could perceive was a laughable program of stepped-on rakes and exploding cigars, the Squatter-in-Chief needed some high-test ego-balm in the worst way. And ‘the worst way’ is exactly how he got it!

A wrap from CPAC: Trump cements his grip on the party even in the face of damning allegations across the river on Capitol Hill.

NeverTrumpers have flipped or been excommunicated.

… On stage and in meeting rooms of a convention center at National Harbor, Maryland, attendees alike donned bright red “MAGA” hats as speakers praised the president lavishly as the savior of the nation.

“I see the greatest president in history,” Mike Lindell, an avid Trump supporter and the chief executive officer of My Pillow Inc., said as he addressed a Thursday session of the Conservative Political Action Conference. “Of course he is, he was chosen by God.”…

Trump arrived to a hero’s welcome on Saturday at CPAC, where eight years ago he was booed. His critics in the conservative movement have either become supporters or been largely excommunicated from the gathering.

“The men and women here today are on the front lines of protecting America’s interests, defends America’s value and reclaiming our nation’s priceless heritage,” Trump told the crowd, after predicting a bigger victory in 2020 than he achieved in 2016. “With your help, we are reversing decades of blunders and betrayals. These are serious betrayal to our nation.”

Chants of “Trump! Trump! Trump! Trump!” filled the arena as the president accused his predecessors of enriching foreign countries at America’s expense. Calls for “Four more years” rang out as Trump ran through many of his well-worn applause lines…

“Acquiescence to Trump is now the defining trait of the Republican Party more than two years into his presidency.” https://t.co/kVSaRtOhg2

— Daniel W. Drezner (@dandrezner) March 2, 2019

… In interviews over the past week, Republicans on Capitol Hill offered an array of reasons for their unflinching loyalty to Trump as the 2020 campaign begins to take shape: a deep-seated fear of his pull with their supporters in primary races; fraying consensus about conservatism as nationalism takes hold of the party; and shared partisan disdain for Trump’s perceived enemies in the news media and the Democratic Party.

“We’re not going to turn on our own and make the Democrats happy,” said Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.), who is up for reelection in 2020. “We don’t see any benefit in fracturing, but we do see a lot to lose.”…

CPAC was always a place for agitprop and mean spirited garbage. I and my former colleagues at @mmfa have covered it for 15 years and it’s always been the shitpile of hate and racism and bigotry and grifting it is today. Quit pretending things just got bad cause Trump is icky. https://t.co/H1LUNM00P4

If you click on Daniel Dale’s tweet below, you can see all of his commentary on two hours of psychodrama and fear-massage. I hope the Star pays Dale well, because the poor man must be at real risk for PTSD by now.

This is 100% the weirdest Trump speech I've ever heard.

White House pool:
“POTUS’s CPAC speech concluded at 2:18pm. He spoke for just over two hours.
Members of the audience left early. POTUS concluded his speech saying not one person had left early.”

Count on the NYTimes, though — when Trump announces everyone must now change their underwear every half hour, the Grey Lady will applaud his commitment to community hygiene and lingerie sales!

Since I don’t pay attention to this crap, I didn’t realize that Trump had been booed when he first appeared here.

    How things have changed.

He is King of the Hill for these people. Grifters all over the world are taking notes.

Re: the Cornyn quote about his willingness to follow his party into hell, why the fuck didn’t the reporter ask the obvious question—how deep into hell is willing he go?

If anyone said republicans would be fine with porn star payoffs four years ago they would’ve been pooh-poohed. But here we are, and anybody paying attention (not the national press, obviously) knew republicans were on their way to fascism since Fox News took hold.

So, how far will they go? If Trump loses the 2020 election and declares himself god-emperor where will Cornyn stand? I think we all know the answer but everyone studiously avoids the question.

Hey all… since this is an open thread… F*CK CANCER. Just found out that one of my uncles has been diagnosed with quite advanced lung cancer – so advanced it’s spread. Apparently, he felt nothing wrong until a case of pneumonia wouldn’t go away and now he’s in chemo. He’s never been my favourite uncle (he was the one yuppie in the family, really obsessed with status and always slipping out of family events to smoke cigars with his boys), but he’s still family and this sucks. His kids are in their 20s and apparently doing ok – but still. UGH.

The ‘moron in chief’ frightens the living hell out of me. The righties all over have taken his lead and are running towards fascism. We have an election, probably, in May. The Liberal Party (not liberal at all) are not popular and should lose, badly, according to the polls. BUT TRUMP!
Keep up the fight my US friends.

It’s also always been performance art for Right Wing hacks to see who can be the biggest douchbag. I recall vividly the first one after Obama was elected they staged some fake riot. Of course they love Trump. What I am surprised is why anyone would view CPAC as anything but a live action /4chan.

Republicans like to say Trump was chosen by God, and I agree, to this extent: Their professed deity gave them the choice of an honorable woman and the living personification of evil.
    They chose evil.
