Since at least one Jackal asked about them, good news: Steve look-alike Kitty and his companion chihuahua Leila have a new home together:
UPDATE: Kitty and Leila, the dog and cat "best friends" surrendered to the shelter in the same carrier have been ADOPTED and are settling into their new home together. Thanks for all your comments and RTs about these two! #AdoptDontShop pic.twitter.com/HsRJ2pIjrS

… “A 6-year-old cat named Kitty and a 2-year-old dog named Leila arrived at the shelter on March 14 inside the same pet carrier.
They are each other’s best friend and keeping them together has made a very difficult situation much easier for them to handle,” Anna Rafferty-Fore, associate director of the MSPCA’s Boston adoption center said. The inseparable pets share a makeshift quarters in a room apportioned for them, breaking MSPCA’s traditional housing protocol…
The tabby cat and chihuahua lost their home when their owners were forced to move and could not find housing to accommodate their pets.

That’s so cute…glad they found a home. :)

Hooray hooray! And thanks to the adopters who are going to have two wonderful pets and lots of happiness and love!

@Emerald: I actually felt a little jealous of those lucky humans! Glad those two have a new home, because there is no way little Leila would’ve survived our household… but they’re so adorable…

Yay! and Yay! for Angell. When I was a young “adult”, I took my critters there for routine care. Once I was visiting my pup after (??) , and there was a duck swimming in the bathtub on the ward. (The wards used to be dormitories for the seminary on that spot in JP.)
My other fave Angell story was being in the waiting room when a large and very kind plumber brought in a kitchen sink, with a cat poking out of the drain. The very anxious person was along for the ride. Poor kitty took on more than it could handle, and couldn’t back its head out of the drain hole… (Steve take notice). The plumber removed the entire sink and helped the owner bring it in to the emergency room at Angell. They greased up the cat’s head and had it on its way, with a very relieved owner and a beaming plumber, in no time.
A great place.

In my early 20’s when I was a lot less responsible I had to have a friend take my dog for a couple months while I couch surfed. I got him back when I got a home but I felt like such a heel the whole time. I feel for the parents that had to give up their kids.

I have seen sea lions hop onto the stern swim platform on recreational fishing boats in Cabo, stick their head over the gunwale, and beg for excess bait fish as the ships return to harbor. They seem to know it is pointless to try the same trick on outgoing ships. They were huge sea lions, unlike this enterprising fellow who looks like a juvenile male (yes, they get much bigger), and could hop all the way up and feed himself. I would love to see the “before” footage of how he got up there. Plus only the smaller personal bait tanks are mounted that close to the edge.

They were a nice pair. Personality. Must’ve been hard and sad to give them up. Glad they’re homed.

I’ve definitely been needing happy stories lately. Can we get an update on BJ sponsored animal rescue? I would so love to hear how their critters are doing.

I’ve been holding onto my Amazon boxes for the last month. I now have enough to build a cat fort with plenty of tunnels. I’m going to throw a meowijuana blunt in there, but only one of my cats responds to catnip. But two of them are going to LOVE the fort.

Yeah for Kitty and Leila! I needed some happy news Anne thank you so much for the update.

Kitty and Leila should have a facebook or youtube page so we can watch their adjustment to their new environs. Have a happy life Kitty and Leila.

I can’t beat MoxieM’s Angell memorial story. I will chime in that our cat developed a rather strong psychological reaction when we first brought our newborn daughter home. We brought him in to Angell to get checked for a UTI (he was peeing very specifically on the baby’s furniture). Never have I seen a three week old baby human as ignored as my daughter was in the Angell waiting room and treatment areas. It was as if she didn’t exist and our handsome orange feline got to be the star of the show. He was a smart fellow to lead us there during those colicky days.

Our invaluable cat, Toasty is an Angell rescue. We almost went with a fellow we called Mr. Feisty. But in the end, the toast colored kitten with the long tail won. Thank FSM.
I’m sure Mr. Feisty would have been fun, but Toast is perfect.

So happy to hear about Kitty and Leila.
I have no experience with sea lions but I do have many encounters with seals when I’m out on the ocean kayaking. They are like sea Labrador retrievers. Even though kayaks were (still are) used by seal hunters, they are so curious about humans. Their heads pop up and they check you out and then go back under again. There’s one old salt I see frequently who has a face full of gray fur. He reminds me of my old lab so much. I hope I see him this summer.
We had a terrible seal die off last summer. It didn’t get much press beyond the local papers but it was truly terrible.

@satby: I’m reading Pete’s book, “Shortest Way Home.” The title is from a James Joyce quote, “Think you’re escaping and run into yourself. Longest way round is the shortest way home.” He’s a talented writer and mentions that he once thought of becoming a novelist. Recommended read.

@Cheryl Rofer: Then you’ll just have to sit somewhere else, won’t you? :-)

@Chacal Charles Calthrop: I was living there too. 8 miles away. I guess an “event” is when people die immediately. A reactor melting down is just an oopsie. It was such a non-event that no commercial reactor has been built since.

@Inspectrix: Aw but that was good of you to try and see to your cat’s needs, especially while juggling a new baby/lack of sleep. (Too many bad people would off load the cat somehow.) The sink situation was definitely a once in a lifetime experience.

“Tory MPs, including former Brexit secretary and likely Tory leadership contender Dominic Raab, are said to be against the agreement no matter what. Raab told reporters on Thursday morning that the prime minister should go back to Brussels to seek legally binding changes to the backstop or prepare for no deal.”
The EU has repeatedly said that the withdrawal agreement, including the backstop, cannot be reopened. Asked about Raab’s remarks, an EU official said: “Oh for fuck sake.”

@Jay: I read a good article per suggestion of Guardian on how the EU imposed its will on UK. At any rate, the broad theme is that UK wanted a negotiation and EU stuck to the treaty process and didn’t budge. There was no back and forth. So going back to the EU is basically a form of national body slamming.

@Barbara:
There’s a lot of biased language and framing in that article, but it’s factual.
The EU stuck to the EU Rules and Procedures for leaving,
The Brits hoisted themselves on their own petard of British Exceptionalism and inbred arrogance.

@Sab: Yes – they actually sit apart more now than they did when they first came. But they are so cute when they are together, I probably have an inordinate number of photos of them together. Usually in the evenings, Zooey has the couch and Ric has one of the other chairs.

@Jay: It is hard to follow at times, but it gives information on who the EU players are when they aren’t playing Brexit, which I found helpful. It also explains the Irish border issue rather clearly.

@Mary G: That was WarriorGirl, back when she was WarriorBabyGirl. I’d play my guitar; her babysitter played guitar, and we sent her to a music-oriented preschool. She took up violin at 4. These days she’s playing Vivaldi and taking seminars in Historically Informed violin playing, as well as a week at Fiddle Camp this summer.
Not every kid loves music (or art, or sports, or languages, or whatever), but expose them young enough to see what they gravitate to.

Forty years ago I was with my parents in FL — IIRC we were in Key West, where they had rented a roomy condo for the winter. We were really really glad to be the extra several hundred miles farther south that year!!! And not happy to be going back north, either.

And a “phooey” to all landlords who refuse categorically to rent to people with pets. When I was renting my house out, I always included the magic phrase “pets negotiable” in the ad, and I was always besieged with potential renters – and the ones I rented to, who *always* had at least one pet, were always, always, fantastic tenants. I believed then and still believe that in most cases, evidence of a well-cared-for pet was evidence of a responsible person.
