Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

The world has changed, and neither one recognizes it.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

T R E 4 5 O N

No one could have predicted…

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

You cannot shame the shameless.

If you don’t believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn’t freedom, it is privilege.

When we show up, we win.

I really should read my own blog.

Humiliatingly small and eclipsed by the derision of millions.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

All hail the time of the bunny!

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

This post is in: Grifters Gonna Grift, I'm With Her 2016, Open Threads, Proud to Be A Democrat, Republicans in Disarray!, Warren for President 2020, Clown car

Friday night, presumably the young & impressionable are either in bed or off partying somewhere, let’s indulge in a nice rowdy game of Kick the Wohl-ball!

First off — if Warren isn’t our 2020 candidate, the winner should most definitely hire her social media staff instanter, because they are GOOD:

The owner of the escort agency that Jacob Wohl's fake Warren accuser said he worked for disputes the story and says he would never employ the alleged escort — He's "not up to caliber to work at our agency."

Honestly, if there really are 24-year-old Marine veterans who've had to turn to sex work to make ends meet, I'm pretty sure Elizabeth Warren has a plan for that.

    Of course there is!

I think I saw that the guy wasn’t even a Marine? And the subplot where the “sex scars” he took off his shirt to show actually came from some mishap with a chain on a swing set he was putting together and he’d posted on his Instagram about it. You couldn’t make this stuff up.

    OT

Anyone see this Jonathan Bernstein column in Bloomberg News?

Oust Pelosi From the Presidential Succession Line
Democrats should make it legally impossible for impeachment to deliver them the White House.

I think Bernstein is incredibly naive to theorize that removing Pelosi from the line of succession would make any goddamn difference to Republicans. I wonder how many other pundits in coming weeks are going to echo Bernstein’s suggestion

The top order of business when the House of Representatives returns from recess on Oct. 15 is certain to be the impeachment inquiry into the conduct of President Donald Trump. Here’s something the lawmakers should take care of first: changing the presidential line of succession to remove the speaker of the House and the president pro tempore of the Senate.

The U.S. Constitution specifies that the vice president takes over if a president leaves office. After that, presidential succession is up to Congress, which has changed the procedure several times throughout U.S. history. There are two strong reasons to change the law again now: It’s the best way for the Democrats to handle impeachment, and it’s best for the nation, anyway.

With Trump claiming that the constitutional process of impeachment amounts to a “coup,” it’s a good idea for Democrats to make it as clear as possible that they have no intention of overturning the 2016 election by installing a Democrat in the White House. That’s important because Speaker Nancy Pelosi is second in line to replace Trump under current law, behind Vice President Mike Pence.

Last week we heard about there being a second whistleblower, of sorts, so is this another, actual whistleblower? Was that first, second whistleblower an “intelligence official”?

(CNN) A second intelligence official with concerns and more direct knowledge regarding President Donald Trump’s dealings with Ukraine is considering filing a whistleblower complaint, The New York Times reported Friday.

Also too, kind of surprised no one has suggested Cher.

Much as I love the woman / actress, Cher does *not* have the required ‘perky (yet deadly) blond’ personality.

    Warren’s Buffy, Cher’s (a post-transformation) Willow.

I’m only seeing the Wohl story second- and third-hand (and a big thanks to those who have exposed themselves to the direct flow), but let me see if I’ve got this straight. They hired a stripper who lied about where he worked, lied about his military service, and lied about his “sex scars” – all things that were fact-checked within minutes – and cracked up while he was trying to deliver his lines?

Are we sure that Wohl and his buddy aren’t deep-undercover Democratic operatives?

    What a fucking moron.

On the other hand: maybe the Dems should turn all their positions of power over to Republicans, to show the country how sincere they are in their quest for bipartisan solutions to what ails America.

I think, to help in that effort, the Dems should STRONGLY push for the repeal of the 22nd Amendment. Maybe the First Amendment as well, just to show that they’re SERIOUS about “reaching across the aisle.”

Mrs. SFAW is not into the inside-baseball of politics, so she hadn’t heard about SPW’s steamy affair. So, I told her about Wohl’s presser, and the allegations, and asked for her reaction re: SPW’s actions.

“You want my serious, or my not-so-serious response?”
    “Either way is fine.”
“Go, Liz!!” (punctuated with an upward fist pump)

I think Bernstein is incredibly naive to theorize that removing Pelosi from the line of succession would make any goddamn difference to Republicans.

I remember when pundits were pondering whether Al Gore should refuse the presidency if he won the electoral college but lost the popular vote.
