170,000 people are attending the Obama-Biden Fundraiser, including me.
I don’t believe there is a video feed that I can put up, but if you know of one on YouTube or somewhere accessible to all, please say so in the comments.
Here’s the link – if you donated, you can view from here.
MisterForkbeard
I think they’ll put up a link to the video afterwards.
I’ve been watching, and I like what I see so far. Biden (and Obama) both ramble for a bit and talk a lot, but it’s clear they care and know what they’re speaking about. Biden keeps trying to engage personally with the questioners, which is both endearing and frustrating – the way this is set up, he can only ask them rhetorical questions.

Barack is looking good, and happy. And laughing.
MisterForkbeard
The actual link for the event is “https://live.joebiden.com/c/grassroots-fundraiser-Obama“, but I don’t think it’s usable unless you have an e-mail address that’s donated.
EDIT: I just checked in another browser with another e-mail address. The link appears to have worked – I had to give them a phone number and email address.

WaterGirl
@MisterForkbeard: Try the link i just put in up top?
dmsilev
@schrodingers_cat: Racism and sexism.
MisterForkbeard
@WaterGirl: I’m really enjoying listening to the two of them talk about these issues. Good to see when one or the other nods and says “right on” or “that’s the truth” while the other is speaking. These dudes are friends, you can tell.
In general I think Obama is giving more technical answers and Biden is more empathetic answers, but both of them have a lot to say and they’re both good. Biden’s response about the engagement of young people was good.
When he was young, the left and the young basically thought “don’t get involved because government is corrupt”. And that had real problems – when MLK was murdered, people realized that it was bad and they had to engage. And now it’s bad – it’s real bad. But there was a wakeup call 3 years ago when Trump was elected, and we’ve had a continuous wakeup call since. And young people are some of the best in the country – they’re involved, engaged, and educated. And they’re stepping up.
It was a good answer.
@WaterGirl: I can watch it – was putting the same link up because I didn’t see in the post. Thanks Watergirl!
WaterGirl
St. Louis, MO: What can supporters to do ensure victory in November?
Barack: Donate. Maybe some of you have lost jobs or hours or were self-employed and have fewer customers, in the pandemic. Under strain.
#1 If in fact the situation is as urgent as I and Joe believe it is, this is the time to make an investment.
In 2008 and 2012 would get letters from seniors: I don’t have a lot but I’ll send you $25 a month. College students wrote to say they would give up Starbucks and I’ll send that money each week. That makes a difference.
#2 Still need a huge number of volunteers. How it works will be different because of the public health crisis. It won’t be traditional – more phone, more video, more outreach, so it’s vital if you have time, or can make time, we have to be involved in this campaign.
#3 The importance of reaching out and having conversations one-on-one, friends, neighbors, relatives, engaging in ways that only you can do. Your uncle or grandmother who watches FOX, you can make a difference. You can reach them because they love you and you know the goodness in them. Ask questions about who we are as a country. Do we demand honesty and fair dealing and respect toward other people in live and church, then should expect that out of our leaders. You can have that conversation. Every vote will count. Grassroots will always beat money. Power of relationships – that’s what you have to activate, but not in a scolding way. More of a “who are we and what do we believe in” way
Young people who are active in the current protests and are passionate about issues but have voiced or bought into the notion that electoral politics isn’t connected to what’s happening… MLK pursuing justice is both and, not either or. Raise awareness and disrupt the status quo to create space for change. And translate change into police departments that work better and DAs that are going to prosecute injustice and folks with budget priorities that invest in communities. in a democracy, those decisions are made at the government level. so no contradiction in being involved in a social movement and being part of the political process. Political process always slower and more frustrating
Steady steps is how we perfect this union.
schrodingers_cat
@dmsilev: The question was rhetorical but your answer is spot on.
zhena gogolia
@MisterForkbeard:
I donate to Biden every month. That doesn’t count?
When I go to your link it asks me for a mobile phone number they can send texts to. I don’t have a phone that gets texts. I don’t text.
MisterForkbeard
@schrodingers_cat: True, but also worth repeating sometimes :(
MisterForkbeard
@zhena gogolia: No idea. I think you’d be okay if you gave them a normal phone number and your past donations probably get you in. Not sure, though.
I’m pretty sure they’re going to post this up in the next day or so anyway, if you’d like to see it later.
@WaterGirl: I love how Obama started this huge answer with “I have so much to say here but I’ll keep it short” and then talked for 10 minutes. :)
ETA: And Biden finally gets a chance to answer and says “I want everyone to know that I agree with everything President Obama just said”.
And then launches into his own answer, where he talks about how everyone is already helping so much, and that this current situation is really bad – and we can’t be accusatory. We have to reach out. It goes beyond just Trump, and you have to do what you can.
Ah darn, he just brought up Kentucky’s lack of polling stations which is really complicated and not quite how he’s describing it.
Redshift
@WaterGirl: Dang, you’re a fast transcriber!
WaterGirl
@Redshift: Yeah, I am still updating at #10.

WaterGirl
Joe on question #2.
Lives and livelihoods on the ballot. Need everyone to vote, donate, volunteer your time and heart, recruit friends and families to do the same thing.
Really talk about these things. Do you want your kids to grow up with Donald Trump’s value set? Not dem vs. republican. Bigger than DJT staying in office or not. We need to reach beyond the Dev party.
Be good neighbors and reach out and organize later. It happens one person at a time, sometimes your own family. Try to walk a mile in their shoes. Look to build bridges. That’s how we restore the social structure. Talking.
Lots surely don’t like the way things are going, reach out, pull them in. Most of all make sure we engage everybody.
That above all determines whether we win – whether we have those conversations.
Register to vote. Help insure full fair and safe elations. volunteer to be poll workers.
KY cut down to 535 voting places. All about COVID and making people stand closer together. Call your elected officials to ask for vote by mail. Talk about sanitizing after each vote. Social distancing.
Tell people what DJT is doing – cutting off funding to post office so they can’t send out ballots.
MisterForkbeard
@artem1s: It’s funny, because I was noting that both Obama and Biden are very good at listening and staying engaged while the other is speaking. They have an attention span.

#3 question.
NC. how will you get the US back on track to being a leader on the world stage?
Joe: repairing the damage Trump has done and restoring our work on the world state.
Global cooperation important to lives and livelihoods.
Have already met every foreign leader. Climate accord, nuclear deals. President will have to do on election day. Call friends and say “america is back”. rejoin paris accord. recommit to cooperating with democratic partners around the world. nuclear proliferation. mass migration, stop the cold war future we are talking about.
Do what america does best. Barack would lead not by the example of our power but front the power of our example. Led by example.
when Barack was elected, US was the most admired nation in the world.
now we are below china and just above russia.
Joe doesn’t want to be the policeman of the world. Coalitions. Without coalitions, america has to lead. All coming our way. reestablish our word, our standing.
First thing, pick up the phone and say “we’re back” because they are desperately looking for american leadership.
Ceci n est pas mon nym
Oh Joe.
”Reach out (to your MAGAt relatives / neighbors)”
But in question #3 he promises to start fixing the damaged relationship with the world the day after Election Day. “I will pick up the phone, call European leaders and say ‘America is back.’”
Think I’ll cry now. God it’s good to hear from these two.
Redshift

Barack on #3.
Joe familiar with the issues, has the relationships, he knows how America ended up leading.
This matters even if you don’t think foreign policy matters. With ebola sparking in west africa, it threatened to kill hundreds of thousand or millions of people if it wasn’t contained there, it would eventually, even with travel bands, it spreads and we were at risk as well.
We mobilized the entire world community to help deal with that crisis.
We built the runway so chinese planes could land with supplies. We assured doctors and nurses that if they came to help, we would have the capacity to bring them out safely if they got sick.
we stopped that crisis – the big issues don’t affect just one country. Financial crisis in thailand can screw up economy here and elsewhere. drought or famine you get a migration crisis.
Part of our well being is being able to help mobilize the world before problems get out of hand. Eg. Paris climate accord.
All countries need to do what they need to do, so what we do is not sufficient. On the other hand, if we’re not doing our part, they will say why should we bother?
Same with human rights.
Joe and Barack pressured for freedom of the press, now our white house is giving a militarized response to peaceful demonstrators or a leader who threatens and impugns the free press… folks like Putin say “we have no pressure, we don’t have to do anything about our political prisoners” because there’s nobody to call us to account.
Not the world we want to live in
Bad stuff in the world – lists a bunch of things – but it can get better, and that’s been the trajectory because of american leadership and ability to articulate better values. Women treated better, kids treated better, made the world less violent and cruel and bigoted
There’s a big contest about who we are. I prefer a story that says we care and respect and all children are nurtured and all deserve education and truth matters and don’t believe in going after religions or ethnic groups
That’s what we have to fight for.

Martin
@debbie: It was only partially snark. She was bemoaning the challenge of his living situation while not being willing to actually address his living situation. So it was a bit more of a ‘you can’t hide from this’ message and if she was willing to partially hide from it, why not go all the way?

But I do have something of a desire for new people, fresh thinking. And there’s also that long-ago Iraq AUMF vote that I still consider the “original sin” of a lot of Ds who were in office when I was a freshly-minted adult.
As far as the open seat, I only recognized one name, Alan Khazei. There were like 6 people running. I got my work cut out for me, especially if I want to put in some volunteer time in the next two months.

Markey has been a fantastic Representative for Massachusetts for years and he’s been Senator for just one term, so it’s not like he’s entrenched in his position.
Kennedy is trading on his name. He has been a Representative for 6 years, but I’m not sure where he’s stood out from the pack on any issue.

Fun fact—at my high school, college-bound kids could take a year of typing instead of a year of biology. Let that sink in. So I never had biology, but typing turned out to be a much more valuable life skill for programming. Yes, I used keypunches, too.

And talk about losing a sunny afternoon on the front stoop, the wind picked up an hour ago on what was a perfect and calm brilliantly sunny day and blew in the overcast so here I am stuck with youse.

@Sab: I have texted two back so far asking them to remove from their text lists and they have both thanked me for previous support and complied. But texts are a first in the past few days.

@JPL: hahahahaha
I had a similar thought.

@Omnes Omnibus: Funny!

@WaterGirl: Too many things going on today. ;-)
I’m glad it apparently went well. Bloomberg says $7.6+$3.4M.
Cheers,

@Kropacetic: Someone confused me with PurpleGirl once, they knew it was “one of the Girls”. It happens!

@rikyrah: I don’t know. But it is going to lead to lot of separated families and lives in limbo.

@WaterGirl: C.S. Lewis once described the water beyond the end of the world as tasting “purple.” So there’s that connection too.

@rp:
That “third term” thing. Did Trump learn that from Rudy G?

I gave the organization $100. I’ve been donating mostly to Senate candidates so far although I did give money to Kamela Harris & Elizabeth Warren’s campaigns. This was my first donation to Uncle Joe. Probably won’t be my last. Really I want a clean sweep come November.
WaterGirl
@Kropacetic: I did not know that!

@Just Chuck:
So you’re sure ActBlue is at fault?
Surely you are aware that everyone who contributes to a political candidate winds up on the FEC database? I use ActBlue to donate a lot, and while I do get some unsolicited email fundraising, it isn’t overwhelming, and the unsubscribe function works pretty well.
And as you say, marking one as SPAM works pretty well too.
I’m pretty tired of seeing people fuss about ActBlue, they work for me, have worked for me for several election cycles, and raise billions of dollars for progressive liberal candidates. If you think you can do better, then do so. Otherwise keep your negativity to yourself, or start blogging at a Republican blog.

Yes, it was very helpful. Now I know I want to watch the recording!

I will confess I do not receive text messages at all. If I do, they are never received, as i don’t do texting at all. If you don’t have cell service at home, and your phone is off unless you need to use it for curb side service, you tend to not get text messages, which to me is a v good thing!
I have never had ActBlue ask me for a phone number, which makes it really hard for ActBlue to be guilty of giving political campaigns my phone number!
WaterGirl
@stinger: oh, good!

@Kropacetic: I read those multiple times, but I did not remember that detail.

@WaterGirl: Funny what sticks with one person versus an other.

@schrodingers_cat: The immigration ban seems like slowly whittling away rather than a massive blow like eliminating DACA would. It’s still awful but not a Night of the Long Knives. It seems that the plan is to make it very uncomfortable for anyone who is not white. This could put the US in a very uncompetitive situation for decades. Imagine rural hospitals with no doctors. Imagine Microsoft without south asians.

@Another Scott: yeah, that’s an old old retread. Cute though. I remember at the time there was a lot of speculation about what the cat was actually watching; it was the general consensus that it wasn’t watching Psycho but was probably just watching a feather toy being moved around or something…
