I haven’t emphasized this race as much as some others because the Democrat, Mark Kelly, has led consistently. The Republican incumbent, Martha McSally, is kind of a nut:
“We’re doing our part to catch up, you know, to get our message out,” she said in a recording first reported by Arizona’s Family (Channel 3). “But it takes resources. So, anybody can give, I’m not ashamed to ask, to invest. If you can give a dollar, five dollars, if you can fast a meal and give what that would be.”
You know what to do, dawg:
Ian
Did the reporter ask her how many meals she skipped to pay for her campaign?
Hoppie
@Ian: All of them, Katie.
Frank Wilhoit
Yes, I do know what to do (I can’t be arsed to actually do it, but someone a little more spiteful and pertinacious than myself may be listening). Go to the dollar store, get some of the worst packaged food they have, and send it to McSally’s campaign, labelled as an in-kind donation. If it could be made to look like it had sat a while in a pantry with mice, so much the better.

The political career of Martha McSally is really a cautionary tale of our times… she got her start being recruited to wrest control of the southern Arizona congressional district from the Dems, whose most recognizable politician of note was Gabby Giffords. Giffords was a Blue Dog, had her roots in local businesses here and made a difficult vote in coming out in favor of the ACA. She published her reasoning in the paper of note down here (Arizona Daily Star) and essentially was one of those key votes that made the ACA happen and in doing so, put her squarely in the cross-hairs of the GOP (and yes, that choice of language was intentional).
After her near assassination, the job went to her chief of staff (Ron Barber, also wounded) to complete her term and serve yet another one after running against GOP red meat candidates. The GOP looked at the district and realized that its actually a fairly moderate district, so they recruited McSally to run… combat vet, woman and not foaming at the mouth rhetoric that peeled off just enough voters to swing the seat to her (with all kinds of dark money fear mongering going on in the background that didn’t have her name attached to it).
Things became more dire when the Arizona Congressional redistricting commission was created by voter mandate to redraw the congressional district lines and to redraw them fairly. Meanwhile, elected to a 2nd term, McSally was one of those faithful GOP members who led the fight to gut the ACA while the GOP controlled the House and when Flake announced his retirement, she was the GOP congressional member with the least amount of baggage, so she cruised to the nomination just in time as her home district had just been redrawn as being more favorable to a Dem opponent because it was gerrymandered less than it had been.
She was expected to make a meal out of Sinema, but the darker money and the higher the scrutiny continued to cast McSally in a poor light because with more attention; it became more and more apparent that she was a less than empathetic legislator who had simply yet to reveal herself for being a less than optimal person. After her defeat at the polls, she was fortunate enough to step into McCain’s shoes post his death and is essentially attempting to run a rinse and repeat campaign against Kelly as she did before, emphasis on fear and disingenuous statements about her opponent. But instead of a free-spirited Sinema to run against, she drew an astronaut and husband of Giffords (who is the unspoken sympathetic character in the room that no one mentions) in Mark Kelly. Now, I have no idea on how good Kelly will be, but since he’s running as a Dem, he’ll likely support most Dem positions and perhaps be a bit to the left of Sinema, regardless of where exactly on the scale that he would be, he’d be a helluva improvement.
The not spoken benefit of supporting him is the likely help downticket, if this is a wave election, a blue tsunami would wash a shitpotful of local idiocy out of office. There’s a gettable congressional seat (Tiperneni vs Schweikert) and a good bit of the Phoenix suburbs could really be in play that would change the legislative dynamic in the state… so coin tossed Kelly’s way would/could have a ripples in the political pond effect…just sayin’

McSally ran a very negative, hard edged campaign against Kyrsten Sinema in 2018. I followed it on local media, and caught a picture of them making a joint appearance in a TV or radio studio. Sinema’s body language was striking- she was edging away from McSally like McSally totally disgusted her. Sinema won, although it took a couple days to count all the ballots. I don’t think this race will be close, and I think McSally knows she’s a goner.

There was a recent story about how evangelical churches are bleeding members into Q-Anon because of the pandemic. Essentially folks are not going to church because they are shut down and in their spare time spending more time online.
I’m wondering what affect all of this will have on the November election. Honestly it could go in both directions. If people are spending more time online exposed to vile right wing nonsense that could have a detrimental effect. On the other hand, if a lot of people aren’t sitting in the pews listening to pro-Trump evangelical bullshit and lies, and aren’t spending time in the workplace listening to the same from their asshole co-workers that might be a plus. Who the hell knows.
